Mark (een collega van Erik) komt voor het werk naar Sydney. Hij komt ook bij ons overnachten. Eigenlijk zou hij twee nachten hier blijven, maar hij heeft een hele dag vertraging en komt daarom maar één nacht bij ons. Erik en Mark hebben ’s middags een afspraak bij ons in de buurt en komen na die afspraak gelijk naar huis toe. Als we thuiskomen van Fleur ophalen, zijn Erik en Mark al thuis. Daan is gelijk heel enthousiast (zoals altijd), maar Fleur wil eerst haar gewone kleren aantrekken voordat ze even hallo wil gaan zeggen. Daarna gaat ze gelukkig wel even een handje geven. Ik ga met de kids dan nog even snel naar het winkelcentrum om nog wat spullen te halen voor het feestje van Fleur zaterdag. Als we terug zijn, houden de mannen het werken ook voor gezien en kunnen Fleur en Daan zich even lekker uitleven. Het is heerlijk weer en dus zitten we lekker buiten. Fleur en Daan vinden het wel erg leuk om met Mark te spelen en Mark rijdt op een gegeven moment op de step van de kids door de tuin. Dat is natuurlijk een groot feest. Verder hebben we lekker gegeten en tot ’s avonds laat in de tuin gezeten. Nadeel van het mooie weer is wel dat de kakkerlakken ’s avonds om je voeten heen rennen en het echt stikt van de spinnen en andere beesten. Maar goed, het was lekker buiten en erg gezellig.
Mark (a colleague of Erik) is coming to Sydney for work. He is also coming to our house and will spend the night here. He was originally staying here for two nights, but he had a whole day delay and so he will only be staying here for one night. In the afternoon Erik and Mark have an appointment close to where we live and after that they will come home straight away. When we arrive home from picking Fleur up from school, Erik and Mark are already home. Daan is enthusiastic straight away (like he always is), but Fleur wants to get into her normal clothes first. Fortunately after that she is going to say hello. Together with the kids I quickly go to the shopping mall to buy some things for Fleur’s birthday party this Saturday. When we arrive, the guys stop working and Fleur and Daan can run around and make lots of noise. The weather is really good so we sit and play outside. Fleur and Daan are having fun playing with Mark and after a little while Mark is even riding Fleur and Daan’s scooter in the garden. That of course is a lot of fun for the kids. We had a nice dinner and we stayed outside until late at night. A bad thing about the good weather is that the cockroaches are running around your feet at night and there are lots of spiders and other creepy crawlers. But it was very nice outside and we had a great time.
Kaila (een vriendinnetje van Fleur) komt vandaag bij ons spelen. En Daan gaat bij de buren spelen. Fleur en Kaila duiken samen de kamer van Fleur in en komen daar de rest van de middag bijna niet meer uit. Ze verkleden zich (wel tien keer) en maken zich op (wel een keer of vijf). Ook doen ze een dansje in de kamer van Fleur en dat willen ze daarna aan ons laten zien. Erik en ik moeten op de bank gaan zitten, en Fleur en Kaila rennen de kamer van Daan in. Dan komt Fleur de kamer van Daan uit en begint te dansen, maar Kaila is een beetje verlegen en durft niet zo goed. Als Erik dan ook nog een flauw grapje maakt, durft ze helemaal de kamer van Daan niet meer uit te komen. Als Erik even weggaat uit de kamer durft ze gelukkig wel samen met Fleur buiten op de foto te gaan. Het worden erg leuke foto’s. Ze hebben het heel erg leuk gehad samen.
Kaila (a friend of Fleur) is coming to our house to play today. And Daan is going to play at the neighbours. Fleur and Kaila go into Fleur’s room and stay there for the rest of the afternoon. They dress up (about ten times) and put make-up on (about five times). They also practice a little dance in Fleur’s room and they want to show that to us later on. Erik and I have to sit on the couch and Fleur and Kaila run into Daan’s room. Then Fleur comes out of Daan’s room and starts to dance, but Kaila is a little bit shy and does not really want to dance for us. When Erik’s is making silly jokes, she does not want to come out of Daan’s room at all. I sent Erik away to another room and fortunately she does want to come out to make a picture. The pictures look really good. They had a fun day together.
Daan maakt met playgroup heel veel leuke knutselwerkjes. En ik dacht dat het wel eens leuk zou zijn om een aantal van die werkjes op de website te zetten zodat iedereen kan zien wat een leuke dingen we doen bij playgroup. Hier dus een foto van een bootje, een vliegtuig en een brandweerauto (die kon je opeten). Knap gedaan van die kids (met een beetje hulp van de moeders).
At playgroup Daan makes a lot of nice craft works. And I thought that it would be nice to put some of his works on the website so everybody can see what nice things we do at playgroup. So here is a picture of a boat, an airplane and a fire truck (that one was eatable). The kids did a really good job (with a little help of the mums).
Vandaag is Fleur dan echt jarig en is ze vanaf vandaag dus 6 jaar! We zingen haar vrolijk wakker vanmorgen (wat ze niet zo heel erg leuk vindt, maar wij wel) en dan moeten we gewoon naar school. Er wordt hier meestal niet getrakteerd met je verjaardag maar het mag wel. Dus hebben Fleur en ik gisteren kleine cakejes gebakken die ze vandaag in de klas mag uitdelen. Daan en ik zijn om 10.45 uur in de klas voor de verjaardag van Fleur. Er wordt voor haar gezongen en ze mag vertellen en laten zien wat ze heeft gekregen. Dan krijgen alle kinderen een cakeje en gaan ze nog even met z’n allen op de foto. Dat was erg leuk allemaal. Daarna hebben ze recess (wat eten en drinken in de morgen), dan gaan ze allemaal naar buiten. Daan en ik gaan ook nog even mee naar buiten. Als de les daarna weer begint gaan Daan en ik weer naar huis. ’s Middags als Fleur weer thuis is, krijgt ze nog een paar kadootjes. Dat had ze helemaal niet meer verwacht en dat is natuurlijk extra leuk. Zo was haar echte verjaardag toch ook nog een beetje feest.
Today is really Fleur’s birthday and from today she is 6 years old! We wake her up this morning singing (which she does not like, but we do) and then we just have to go to school. Normally most kids do not bring birthday treats to school on their birthday, but they do not mind if you do. So Fleur and I made little cupcakes yesterday so she can give them to the kids in her class. Daan and I are at school at 10.45 am to celebrate Fleur’s birthday. The kids sing birthday songs and Fleur can tell and show some of the things she got for her birthday. Then all the kids get a cupcake and I take a picture of all the kids together. It was really fun. After that it is recess time, and they all go outside. Daan and I also go outside with all the kids. When recess is over Daan and I will go back home. In the afternoon, when Fleur is back home, she will get some more presents. She did not expect to get more presents and it was really a big surprise. So her real birthday was also a fun day.
Omdat we nog wel iets leuks wilden gaan doen op de (bijna) verjaardag van Fleur besluiten we naar Featherdale Wildlife Park te gaan. Dat is een wildlife park hier maar ongeveer 5 minuten vandaan. We gaan pas ’s middags en gelukkig is het weer nog steeds goed. Het is een erg leuk park met veel dieren. De kangaroos en wallabies lopen gewoon rond en je kunt ze blaadjes voeren. Dat is natuurlijk geweldig. En de koala’s kun je ook van heel dichtbij zien. Je kunt zelfs naast een koala gaan staan en er dan mee op de foto. Fleur vindt dat wel erg leuk en gaat er snel naast staan, maar de koala zit wat hoger dus ga ik er ook bij staan en kan ik haar optillen want dan zit ze echt naast de koala. Als ik Fleur weer heb neergezet kan Daan ook op de foto. Op het moment dat Daan naar mij toe komt lopen, steekt de koala zijn poot naar mij uit en Daan schrikt hier zo van dat hij eigenlijk niet meer op de foto wil. Maar met een beetje praten en hem stevig vasthouden, hebben we toch ook nog een leuke foto van Daan en de koala. Verder hebben ze nog tasmanian devil’s, alpaca’s, een krokodil, reptielen (van die hele enge grote spinnen en slangen), heel veel wombats en nog veel meer leuke dieren. Het is een erg leuke verjaardagsmiddag voor Fleur.
Because we wanted to do something nice on Fleur’s (almost) birthday we decided to go to Featherdale Wildlife Park. That is a wildlife park that is only about 5 minutes from our home. We go in the afternoon and the weather is still good. It really is a nice park with lots of animals. The kangaroos and wallabies just walk around and you can feed them small leafs. That is a lot of fun. And you can also see the koala’s very well. You can even stand next to a koala and make pictures of that. Fleur loves to do that and runs to the koala. But the koala is a little bit higher on a branch so I stand next to the koala as well and hold Fleur so she will be on the same height as the koala. When I put Fleur down it is Daan’s turn to be in the picture with the koala. But when Daan is walking to me the koala reaches to me with his paw and Daan is so afraid of the koala at that moment that he does not want to stand next to it anymore. But after I talked to him and hold him close to me, we can still make a nice picture of Daan and the koala. We also saw tasmanian devil’s, alpaca’s, a crocodile, reptiles (really scary big spiders and snakes), a lot of wombats and lots of other nice animals. It really was a wonderful birthday afternoon for Fleur.
Morgen is Fleur jarig. Maar omdat ze dan gewoon naar school moet, krijgt ze vandaag al kadootjes zodat ze er ook nog even mee kan spelen. En we hebben met opa, oma en tante Sandra afgesproken dat we kadootjes voor de webcam zullen uitpakken. Fleur krijgt ’s morgens eerst de kadootjes van Daan en papa en mama. Daarna bellen we met Skype naar opa, oma en tante Sandra. In opdracht van hun heb ik kadootjes gekocht voor Fleur. Fleur zit dan voor de webcam en ik geef de kadootjes van achter de computer, over de computer aan Fleur. Opa en oma of tante Sandra doen dan de handen naar voren voor hun webcam zodat het voor Fleur net lijkt of zij de kadootjes zelf aan haar geven. Dat is natuurlijk heel erg leuk. En zo kunnen ze in Nederland ook Fleur’s gezicht zien als ze de kadootjes uitpakt. Want dat is toch altijd het leukste van allemaal, het blije gezicht van je kleinkind of nichtje te zien. Ik heb ook een beetje het idee dat Fleur echt dacht dat opa, oma en tante Sandra de kadootjes zelf aan haar hebben gegeven. Dat is natuurlijk helemaal geweldig. Het was een erg goed idee en erg leuk voor iedereen. Een erg leuk begin van de verjaardag van Fleurtje.
Tomorrow is Fleur’s birthday. But because she has to go to school tomorrow, we give her presents today so she can also play with them. And together with grandpa, grandma and aunt Sandra we decided to open the presents in front of the webcam. Fleur will get our (Daan, dad and mum’s) presents first thing in the morning. After that we call grandpa, grandma and aunt Sandra with Skype. I bought their presents for Fleur here in Australia. Fleur is in front of the webcam and I give her the presents from behind the computer. Grandpa and grandma or aunt Sandra put their hands in front of their webcam so for Fleur it will look like they are giving her the presents. Of course that is a lot of fun. And they can also see Fleur’s face, all the way back in Holland, when she opens her presents. Because it is the best thing of all, to see the happy face of you grandchild or niece. I also think that Fleur really thinks that grandpa, grandma and aunt Sandra gave her the presents themselves. That is really great. It was a good idea to do it like this and fun for everyone. A good start of Fleur’s birthday.
Het weer is gelukkig de laatste dagen weer een stuk beter geworden. Vrijdag was het echt heel erg warm en vandaag was het ook erg lekker. Tijd dus weer om het zwembadje neer te zetten zodat Fleur en Daan weer fijn kunnen afkoelen. Ze hebben weer heel erg veel lol gehad in het water en het is echt heerlijk om af te koelen. Zelfs Erik trok gelijk zijn zwembroek aan toen hij vrijdag na het werken thuis kwam. Alleen met Erik erbij is zo’n klein zwembadje wel heel snel vol. Gelukkig dat Fleur en Daan het alleen maar erg leuk vonden dat papa ook in het zwembadje kwam. En ze zijn allemaal lekker afgekoeld.
Luckily the weather is a lot better the last days. Friday it was really warm and today it was also very nice. So, time to get the little swimming pool out of the garage again so Fleur and Daan can cool off a little bit. They really had a lot of fun in the water and it is nice for cooling off. Even Erik put on his swim shorts on Friday when he came home from work. Only with Erik in the pool the little pool is quit crowded. Luckily Fleur and Daan loved daddy being in the pool with them. And they all got a chance to cool off.
Tijdens elke assembly wordt ook het Nationale Volkslied en het schoollied gezongen. Dat is dus wel een beetje anders dan in Nederland. Om jullie een beetje een idee te geven van wat de kids hier dus moeten leren, hier de tekst van het Nationale Volklied (ze zingen alleen het eerste en derde couplet).
During each assembly they sing the National Anthem and the school song. That is really different from school in Holland. To give you all an idea of what the kids here have to learn, I added the text of the National Anthem (they only sing the first and third verse).

De eerste assembly met de kleuters, year 1 en year 2 is vandaag. En de klas van Fleur doet de presentatie. Ook Fleur krijgt op maandag een briefje mee zodat de tekst die voorgelezen moet worden, thuis kan worden geoefend. Daan en ik gaan natuurlijk kijken en nemen de camera mee zodat we foto’s kunnen maken en een stukje kunnen filmen. Fleur haar zinnetjes gaan heel erg goed en ze vindt het ook erg leuk en een beetje spannend om te doen. Tot onze grote verbazing krijgt Fleur deze week ook nog twee awards. De eerste award is een Blue (Merit) Award omdat ze goed haar best had gedaan met Meetoefeningen. De tweede award die ze kreeg was een nieuwe award. Het is een Sports Award die ze kreeg omdat ze die week heel erg goed haar best had gedaan met sport. Sport is hier heel erg belangrijk en ze hebben in ieder geval allemaal één dag in de week veel sport. En soms gaan ze ook elke morgen eerst een warming up doen en daarna een aantal rondjes hardlopen. Heel goed en gezond allemaal. Fleur had het deze week dus heel goed gedaan. We zijn weer heel erg trots op haar omdat ze nu al twee awards heeft gehad. Knap hoor!
The first assembly with kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 is today. Fleur’s class is doing the hosting of the assembly. Fleur also takes home a note so she can practice the lines she has to read. Daan and I are going to the assembly as well and we bring our camera so we can make pictures and record Fleur speaking. Fleur’s sentences go really well and she enjoys doing that but it is also a little bit scary. We are amazed when Fleur is also getting two awards. The first award is a Blue (Merit) award which she gets for applying herself well during Measurements. The second award is a new award. It is a Sports Award that she gets for doing well in sports that week. Sport is really important here and the kids all have at least one day a week with lots of sport things. And sometimes they also do a warming up in the morning and do some running after that. All those things are very good and healthy for the kids. And Fleur did really well this week. Again we are proud of her because she now has already two awards. Good job!
Nicole, de moeder van Talia, heeft vandaag een cursus in Sydney. Daarom komt Talia na school met ons mee naar huis. Fleur en Talia gaan lekker buiten spelen in de tuin (in het huisje) en binnen met al het speelgoed dat er te vinden is in huis. Ze hebben erg veel plezier en zelfs Daan mag af en toe meespelen. Omdat Talia ook blijft eten, maak ik vandaag lasagne want dat vindt iedereen lekker. Er wordt gelukkig ook goed gegeten. Niet zo lang na het eten komt Nicole Talia weer ophalen. De meiden hebben het erg gezellig gehad vandaag.
Nicole, Talia’s mum, is going on a training in Sydney today. Therefore Talia is coming home with us after school. Fleur and Talia are going to play outside in the garden (in the play house) and inside with all the toys they can find in our house. They are having lots of fun and even Daan can join once in a while. Because Talia also stays for dinner, I am making lasagna because everybody will like that. Fortunately they all eat really well. After dinner Nicole is picking up Talia again. The girls had lots of fun today.
Het wordt echt tijd dat we het speelhuisje van Fleur en Daan in elkaar zetten. We wonen hier nu inmiddels vier maanden en het staat nog steeds uit elkaar in de garage. Dus Erik gaat dat doen en ik ga de garage een beetje opruimen. Ondanks dat we er pas vier maanden wonen is de garage toch al een rommeltje geworden. Tijd om even op te ruimen dus. Het huisje staat aardig snel in elkaar en na een middagje rommelen, ziet ook de garage er weer heel netjes uit. Nu kunnen Fleur en Daan tenminste in het huisje spelen en ze kunnen ook weer veel beter bij al hun eigen speelgoed.
We really need to reassemble Fleur and Daan’s play house. We are living here for four months already and it is still not assembled. So Erik will do that and I will clean up the garage a little bit. Despite us living here for only four months, the garage is already a little bit messy. So it is really time to clean up. The play house is assembled pretty quickly and after an afternoon of cleaning up, the garage also looks really neat. Now Fleur and Daan can play in the play house and they can get to their toys more easily.
We hebben vandaag de eerste inspectie van de makelaar. Er komt een paar keer per jaar iemand kijken of je wel zuinig op het huis bent. Dat je de boel niet afbreekt enzo. En ze vragen gelijk of er nog dingen zijn die gerepareerd moeten worden. Nu hebben we een gat in de muur achter de voordeur en achter de deur van Daan zijn slaapkamer. En wat lekkende kranen in de badkamer. Verder is er niks kapot in het huis en zijn we er heel zuinig op. Er valt dus ook niks op aan te merken en de inspectie duurt echt maar ongeveer 10 minuten. Dat valt weer heel erg mee. Hoeven we ons in ieder geval nooit meer zorgen te maken over die inspecties.
Today we had the first inspection from the real estate agent. A couple of times a year somebody comes to check your house to see if you are careful with it. They do not want you to destroy the house or anything like that. They also ask if there are things that need to be repaired. And we do have a hole in the wall behind the front door and behind the door of Daan’s bedroom. And some leaking tabs in the bathroom. Besides that we have no damages because we are really careful with everything in the house. So they have no complaints and the inspection only takes about 10 minutes. That was a piece of cake. That is something we do not have to worry about the next time.
Omdat ik nu ook kan fietsen, ga ik voortaan op de fiets boodschappen doen. Het was toch niet altijd leuk om van de winkel naar huis heuvel op te moeten ploeteren met Daan in de buggy en boodschappentassen erbij. Nu gaan we dus lekker op de fiets. Ook met de fiets is het natuurlijk best pittig om weer de heuvel op te moeten fietsen, maar het gaat eigenlijk best goed. We wachten soms ook tot Fleur uit school is zodat zij ook met ons mee naar de winkel kan fietsen. Dat vindt Fleur heel erg leuk alleen is voor haar heuvel op ook erg zwaar. Ze redt het meestal net, maar dat is goed genoeg. Je kunt alleen wel merken dat mensen niet echt gewend zijn aan fietsers op de weg. Er zijn hier geen fietspaden en we fietsen dus gewoon op de weg. En om er zeker van te zijn dat mensen niet heel hard langs ons heenrijden als er ook nog tegenliggers aankomen, rijd ik midden op onze kant van de weg. En zo gaat het fietsen eigenlijk heel goed, zelfs het aan de linkerkant van de weg fietsen gaat prima. We blijven nu dus lekker fietsen en laat al die mensen ons maar aanstaren. Ze zullen er vanzelf wel een keer aan wennen.
Because I can ride my bike as well now, I do my shopping by bike. I did not always like to walk back home from the store, because you have to walk up a hill and that is really tough with Daan in the stroller and with all the grocery bags. So now we go by bike. Of course going by bike is also a bit of a challenge because we also have to drive up the hill, but we are actually doing pretty well. Sometimes we wait until Fleur comes home from school so she can go with us to the shops on her bike. Fleur really loves to cycle but the hill is very tough for her as well. Normally she will just make it up there, but that is just good enough. You can also see that people are not really used to having people riding bikes on the road. There are no cycle paths near the road here, so we just drive on the road. And to make sure that no one is driving past us too fast when there are also cars coming from the other direction, I drive in the middle of our side of the road. And we are actually doing pretty well like that; even the driving on the left side of the road is going well. So we keep on riding our bike and let all the people stare at us. Eventually they will get used to us.
Na heel wat geploeter zitten dan toch de nieuwe bagagedrager en het fietsstoeltje achter op mijn fiets. We rijden gelijk even een klein rondje om te kijken of het goed gaat zo. Omdat het lekker weer is, gaat Erik een stuk rijden met zijn mountainbike. Hij gaat fietsen in het Nurragingy Reserve bij Doonside. Tussendoor belt hij nog een keer om te zeggen dat het lekker gaat, maar dat er alleen stukken van het fietspad afgesloten zijn door de regen, en hij is nog niet moe genoeg dus hij fiets nog een stuk door. Als Erik weer thuiskomt, is hij helemaal kapot. Hij had er niet bij nagedacht dat de weg van het Reserve naar huis heuvel op was, en dat hij het laatste stuk nog flink moest ploeteren. Erik was dus erg moe en vies maar wel voldaan. Hij had lekker gefietst en de fiets is goedgekeurd.
After a lot of hard work the child seat is finally attached on my bike. We cycle around for a little while to see if it everything is good like this. Because of the good weather, Erik is going to do some off-road riding on his mountain bike. He goes to Nurragingy Reserve near Doonside. After a while he calls to tell us that everything is going well, but some parts of the cycle track are closed because of the rain, and he is not tired enough so he will go on for a while. When Erik comes home he is really tired. He forgot about the way back home from the Reserve that goes up the hill, and so he had to work really hard. So Erik was very tired and dirty but satisfied. The cycling went well and his new bike is approved.
