We gaan vandaag White Cliffs verkennen. Zodra we de Underground Motel uit zijn en op de weg (nou ja, rood zandpad) lopen, zien we twee kangaroos rond huppen. Even een fotomomentje natuurlijk en Erik gaat ze achterna voor close-ups. We nemen een kijkje bij Otto Photography waar allemaal hele mooie foto’s hangen van Australië en voornamelijk veel mooie foto’s van de outback. Daarna gaan we naar een Opal shop om eens te kijken naar wat ze allemaal verkopen. Hier leren we ook gelijk dat ze daar witte opaal vinden en vaak ook lichtblauwe, maar die is niet veel waard. En als je daar dan sieraden koopt met gekleurde opalen erin, is het een witte opaal met een gekleurd steentje erachter. Leuk om te weten. De sieraden die ze in de shop verkopen, zijn alleen een beetje truttig (vind ik), dus ik koop niks. Fleur krijgt wel een stukje opaal van ons en een ketting met een rozen quartz eraan. We krijgen een rondleiding door PJ’s Underground B&B (staat trouwens te koop) en ook in hun eigen kleine opaalmijntje. Daar kun je gelijk zien hoe diep ze de grond in gaan. We kunnen daar ook nog weer even boven op de huizen lopen en even rondkijken. En als laatste vandaag rijden we een stukje door de opaalvelden bij White Cliffs. We zoeken zelf ook nog naar opaal en vinden een paar stenen met blauwe stukjes erin. Goedkope opaal waarschijnlijk, maar voor ons erg leuk om mee te nemen. Het is hier echt een groot gatenveld waar mensen dus regelmatig naar opaal graven. Erik en ik eten weer in de motel (helaas bijna hetzelfde als gisteravond) en Fleur en Daan eten gewoon een boterham want die zitten nog vol van onze lunch (lekker friet met kip). En dan gaan we maar weer terug naar onze kamer. Nog even spelen en dan lekker slapen.

We are going to explore White Cliffs today. As soon as we walked out of the Underground Motel and on the road (well, a red sandy path), we see two kangaroos hopping around. That is a picture moment of course and Erik is going after them for some close-ups. We go to Otto Photography where there are a lot of beautiful pictures of Australia and mainly a lot of pretty outback pictures. After that we go to an Opal shop to see what things they sell. Here we learn that they find white opal here and often light blue ones, but they are not worth a lot. And when you buy jewelry with coloured opals in it, it is white opal with a coloured stone behind it. That is nice to know. The jewelry they sell in the shop are a bit old fashioned (I think), so I do not buy anything. We do buy Fleur a piece of opal and a necklace with a rose quartz on it. We have a little tour through PJ’s Underground B&B (is for sale by the way) and also in their little opal mine at the back. There we can see how deep the shafts are. We can also walk on the ‘roofs’ of the houses and have a look around. And our last thing for today is the opal fields of White Cliffs. We drive through them and get out of the car to search for opal ourselves and we find a few rocks with blue pieces in it. Probably cheap opal, but for us it is a cool thing to take home. The opal fields are really big with a lot of holes where people look for opal all the time. Erik and I have dinner in the motel again (unfortunately it is almost the same as last night) and Fleur and Daan just have a sandwich because they are not that hungry yet after our big lunch (yummy fries and chicken). And then we go back to our room. The kids can play a short while and then we go to sleep.
