Dust storm

Erik was vanmorgen al vroeg naar zijn werk vertrokken. Ik ben vroeg in de morgen met een slaperig hoofd naar de wc gegaan en bedacht me daar dat de buren ineens wel heel rare lampen met vreemd licht hadden aan de zijkant van het huis. Daarna de televisie aangezet zodat ik het nieuws alvast kon kijken. Daar hoorde ik dat er een duststorm over Sydney trok met stof vanuit de outback. Snel kleren aan en even buiten kijken. En ja hoor, het was dus geen rare verlichting bij de buren, maar allemaal oranje stof. De hele straat lijkt oranje gekleurd. Tegen de tijd dat ik buiten was (en het licht was hier) was de ergste stof al doorgewaaid naar het centrum van Sydney. Daarom is het op de foto van ons huis niet zo oranje als de foto die ik van internet heb gehaald van de Sydney Harbour Bridge. Maar toch wel even een leuk gezicht, en zo lijken het net foto’s van vroeger in sepia.

Erik had left for work very early this morning. I had to go to the toilet early in the morning, still half asleep and was thinking that our neighbours had very strange lights at the side of the house. Then I turned on the television so I could already watch the news. There I heard that there was a dust storm coming over Sydney, with dust from the outback. Quickly put on my clothes to have a look outside. And yes, it was not weird lights at the neighbours, but a lot of orange dust. The whole street looks to have an orange colour. By the time I went outside (and it was light here) most of the dust had already been blown to the centre of Sydney. That’s why the picture of our home is not as orange as the picture I got of the internet of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. But it still is nice to see, and the pictures look very old.

Vreselijke regenbui / Torrential rain

En zoals hier wel vaker gebeurt: na mooi weer komt er een vreselijke regenbui.
And like it happens more often here: after great weather we have torrential rain.

Moeilijk huiswerk Fleur / Difficult homework Fleur

Ik denk dat het tijd is dat ik nog iets vertel over school hier in Australië. Op de kleuterschool hier leren de kinderen al lezen en schrijven. En vanaf dat moment krijgen ze ook huiswerk mee. Fleur zit nu in year 2 (groep 4) en de woorden die ze moet leren zijn echt geen simpele woorden meer. Ik sta er af en toe echt van te kijken wat een kind van 7 jaar allemaal moet leren. Hieronder een paar van de zinnen met moeilijke woorden die Fleur de laatste tijd heeft moeten leren.
* I know the fossil will spoil at the party.
* Was it one million or one billion years ago that the prehistoric Brontosaurus was around?
* A reptile like the stegosaurus will mostly attack in the morning.

Vraag me toch ook wel af of ze deze woorden echt veel zullen gaan gebruiken later. Maar ja, ze moeten het nu eenmaal leren. En Fleur vindt het niet zo heel erg. Ze vindt het nog steeds leuk om haar huiswerk te maken en al deze nieuwe en moeilijke woorden te leren.

I think it is about time that I tell something about school here in Australia again. At kindergarten here the children learn to read and write. And from that time they will have homework as well. Fleur is now in year 2 (grade 4 in Holland) and the words she needs to learn are really not that easy anymore. I am sometimes amazed about what a 7 year old has to learn. Here are some of the sentences with difficult words that Fleur has to learn lately.
* I know the fossil will spoil at the party.
* Was it one million or one billion years ago that the prehistoric Brontosaurus was around?
* A reptile like the stegosaurus will mostly attack in the morning.
* The palaeontologist found the remains of a diplodocus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
I am wondering though when they will ever have to use these words in the future. But this is what they have to learn. And Fleur does not really mind. She still likes making her homework and learning all these new and difficult words.

Daan Teddy Bear Picnic

Omdat Daan volgend jaar ook naar school gaat, is Daan begonnen met Smart Start op school. De kinderen die meedoen aan dit programma gaan elke donderdagmorgen 1½ uur naar school en leren dan alvast hoe de dingen gaan in de klas. Daan vindt het heel erg leuk en maakt al nieuwe vriendjes op school. En vandaag is een speciale dag. Iedereen mag zijn teddy beer meernemen voor een Teddy Beer Picknick. Het begin van de morgen gaat eigenlijk gewoon hetzelfde, maar aan het einde gaan ze met z’n allen naar buiten om daar met de teddy beren samen fruit te eten en wat te drinken. Het was erg gezellig vanmorgen.

Because Daan is going to school next year, Daan has started Smart Start at school. The children who are doing this program go to school every Thursday morning for 1½ hour to learn how things will go in the classroom. Daan is enjoying this a lot and is already making new friends at school. And today they have a special day. Everyone can bring his teddy bear for a Teddy Bear Picnic. The start of the morning is the same as every week, but at the end they all go outside to eat fruit and have a drink with their teddy bears. It was a nice morning.

Ons huis wordt verkocht / Our house is being sold

Vandaag minder goed nieuws. Onze huisbaas (de eigenaar van het huis) gaat het huis verkopen. Er bestaat een kans dat het aan een investeerder verkocht gaat worden en dan kunnen we er waarschijnlijk wel in blijven wonen. Anders wordt het verkocht aan mensen die er zelf in willen gaan wonen en zullen wij iets anders moeten gaan zoeken. Denk niet dat we gaan afwachten wat er gaat gebeuren en dat we maar moeten gaan uitkijken naar een ander leuk huis.

Today we had some not so good news. The landlord (the owner of the house) is going to sell the house. There is a chance that it will be sold to an investor and then there is a big chance that we can stay in the house. Otherwise it will be sold to people who want to live in it themselves and then we have to find something else. Do not think we want to wait and see what happens and that we will start looking for another nice house.

Bad hair day

Katrina en Alicia kwamen vanavond langs met een pruik met lang bruin haar die Alicia nog had liggen. Ze wilden graag zien hoe ik eruit zie met bruin haar. Nou, ik weet nu in ieder geval dat ik nooit mijn haar bruin zal verven. Ook Daan, Fleur en Erik hebben de pruik even opgehad. En zie hier het resultaat.

Katrina and Alicia came by this evening with a wig with long brown hair that Alicia had lying around. They wanted to see what I look like with brown hair. Well, I now know for sure that I will never colour my hair brown. Also Daan, Fleur and Erik have tried on the wig. And here is the result.

Pumpkin Patch Model Search

Vandaag een serie foto’s gemaakt van Fleur en Daan voor de modellen wedstrijd bij Pumpkin Patch (kinderkleding winkel). Fleur haar foto werd wel uitgezocht als winnaar in de winkel, maar ze zijn allebei niet uitgekozen als overall winnaars. Maar ik wil jullie de foto’s niet onthouden.

Today I took a series of photos of Fleur and Daan for the model search at Pumpkin Patch (kids clothing store). Fleur’s photo was the store winner, but they both were not picked as overall winners. Here are the photo’s for everyone who is interested.

Penrith Caravan, Camping and Holiday Expo

In Penrith is dit weekend de Penrith Caravan, Camping and Holiday Expo. Wij gaan hier heen om te kijken of we wat inspiratie kunnen opdoen voor leuke (misschien wel kampeer) vakanties. Er is van alles te zien. Van tenten en vouwwagens tot caravans en abnormaal grote en luxueuse campers. Fleur en Daan vinden het vooral leuk om overal een kijkje in te nemen. Het was zeker leuk om naartoe te gaan en ik denk dat het ook tijd wordt dat we hier maar eens gaan kamperen.

The Penrith Caravan, Camping and Holiday Expo is on in Penrith this weekend. We are going to see if we can find some inspiration for fun (maybe even camping) holidays. There is a lot to see. From tents and camper trailers to caravans and ridiculously big and luxurious campervans. Fleur and Daan mainly like to have a look inside whenever they can. It was definitely worth while going to and I think it is about time that we are going camping here.

Daddy Day Playdate

Daan en ik gaan elke donderdag naar playgroup. We zingen, dansen, eten fruit en andere lekkere dingen, spelen en hebben dan een erg gezellige morgen. Vandaag gaan we ook naar playgroup voor een Daddy Day Playdate. De papa’s zingen en dansen (zo goed als ze kunnen) vandaag met alle kinderen (dus ook Fleur). Het is erg leuk om te zien hoe enthousiast de kinderen allemaal zijn nu de papa’s hier ook een keer zijn. Aan het einde hebben we ook nog een gezellige BBQ. Het was een heel leuk idee en we hebben veel plezier gehad.

Daan and I always go to playgroup each Thursday. We sing, dance, eat fruit and other nice things, play and have a very nice morning. Today we are also going to playgroup for a Daddy Day Playdate. The daddy’s will sing and dance (as well as they can) today with all the children (so also Fleur). It is very nice to see how enthusiastic all the children are to have their daddy’s here now. At the end we have a nice BBQ. It was a very great idea and we had a lot of fun.

Fleur naar Taronga Zoo met school / Fleur at Taronga Zoo with school

Hoi allemaal
Vandaag ben ik naar Taronga Zoo geweest met Year 1 en 2 van mijn school. Year 1 zat in de eerste bus en Year 2 zat in de tweede bus. Dus Year 1 was er het eerst en wij kwamen daarna. Eerst zijn we even naar de giraffen gaan kijken en toen hebben we een leuk plekje gevonden om te gaan eten, dus zijn we eerst wat gaan eten. We hadden geluk want van waar gingen zitten, konden we zelfs nog een giraf zien. Voordat ik ging eten, ben ik met een groepje andere kinderen even naar de wc geweest. Daarna heb ik een popper (flesje drinken) gedronken en een appel gegeten. Toen zijn we weer gaan lopen en onderweg zagen we de olifanten met de kleine Luk Chai (de baby olifant die 4 juli 2009 is geboren). Na de olifanten hadden we een gorillakooi gezien zonder gorilla’s erin. Toen zijn we naar de leeuwen gaan kijken. De leeuwen waren aan het zonnebaden en de tijgers deden hetzelfde. Maar ze zaten niet in dezelfde kooi. Ik heb ook een groep stokstaartjes gezien en koala’s, leuke vogeltjes en grote vogels. Er waren ook twee krokodillen die best wel groot zijn. We zijn ook nog in de reptielen wereld geweest en we hebben dieren gezien zoals slangen en lizards. Ze hadden ook penguins en zeehonden. Tussendoor heb ik ook lunch gegeten. Vlak voor we terug gingen, zijn we nog naar een soort informatie iets geweest waar twee mevrouwen ons dingen vertelden over een lizard met een (per ongeluk) afgehankte staart, een stick insect (wandelende tak), een hele mooie groene kikker een kleine ringtail possum. We mochten de kikker, de kleine ringtail possum en de lizard ook aaien met twee vingers. Ik heb een hele leuke dag gehad.

Hi everybody
Today I went to Taronga Zoo with Year 1 and 2 from my school. Year 1 was in the first bus and Year 2 was in the second bus. So Year 1 arrived first and we came later. First we went to see the giraffes and then we found a nice spot where we could sit, so we had something to eat first. We were lucky because we could still see a giraffe from where we were sitting. Before I ate something, I went to the toilet with some other kids. After that I had a popper (drink) and ate an apple. Then we started walking again and we saw the elephants with little Luk Chai (the baby elephant that was born on 4 July 2009). After the elephants we saw a gorilla cage with no gorilla’s in it. Then we went to see the lions. The lions were sunbathing and so did the tigers. But they were not in the same cage. I also saw a group of meerkat, koala’s, nice little birds and bigger birds. There were also two crocodiles that were pretty big. We also went inside the reptile world and saw animals like snakes and lizards. They also had penguins and seals. Somewhere in between we also had lunch. And just before we had to go back we went to an information thing where two lady’s told us things about a lizard with a (by accident) cut off tale, a stick insect, a very beautiful green frog and a little ringtail possum. We could pet the frog, the little ringtail possum and the lizards with two fingers. I had a really great day.

Speech Fleur

Fleur heeft vandaag weer haar speech gehad in de klas voor de Public Speaking Competition op school. Haar speech gaat deze keer over olifanten (het onderwerp was: je favoriete dier). Fleur heeft het heel erg goed gedaan. En ook dit jaar was ze weer een van de drie beste uit haar klas. Helaas hoorde ze niet bij de beste drie uit year 2 en is ze (weer) niet doorgegaan naar een volgende ronde. Maar dat geeft natuurlijk helemaal niet. Ze heeft het goed gedaan en we zijn erg trots op haar.

Goedemorgen/middag allemaal.
Vandaag ga ik vertellen over olifanten.
Er zijn twee verschillende soorten olifanten: Afrikaanse en Aziatische.

Een Aziatische olifant weegt ongeveer 5000 kg.
Hij heeft twee bulten op zijn hoofd.
Hij heeft kleine driehoekige oren.
Alleen de mannetjes hebben slagtanden.
De sluft heeft twee vingerachtige uiteinden.
Hij heeft 5 nagels aan de voorpoten en 4 aan de achterpoten.
En hij heeft een ronde rug.

Een Afrikaanse olifant weegt ongeveer 7000 kg.
Hij heeft één bult op zijn hoofd.
Hij heeft grotere ronde oren.
De mannetjes en vrouwtjes hebben slagtanden.

In Azië worden olifanten vaak gebruikt om zware dingen te tillen en te dragen.
Als er toeristen komen, dan mogen ze soms op de rug van de olifant meerijden.
En op sommige plaatsen kunnen toeristen zelfs helpen met het verzorgen van de olifanten door ze te wassen en eten te geven.

In Azië is een olifant een symbool voor wijsheid.

De baby olifant in Taronga Zoo is Aziatisch en zijn naam is Luk Chai.
En morgen kunnen we hem allemaal zien als we naar de dierentuin gaan.

Fleur had her speech again today in the classroom for the Public Speaking Competition at school. Her speech is about elephants this time (the subject was: your favorite animal). Fleur did very well again this time. And also this year she was one of the best three in her class. Unfortunately she did not to through to the next round this time either and so she is not one of the best three from year 2. But that does not matter. She still did very well and we are very proud of her.

Good morning/afternoon everyone.
Today I am talking about elephants.
There are two different types of elephants: African and Asian.

An Asian elephant weights about 5000 kg.
It has two bumps on its head.
It has small triangular ears.
Only the males have tusks.
The trunk has two finger-like tips at the end.
It has 5 nails on the front feet and 4 on the back feet.
And it has a round back.

An African elephant weights about 7000 kg.
It has one bump on its head.
It has larger round ears.
The male and female have tusks.
The trunk has only one finger-like tip at the end.
It has 4 nails on the front feet and 3 on the back feet.
And it has a more straight back.

In Asia elephants are often used to lift or carry heavy things.
When tourists come, they might have a ride on the elephants back.
And in some places tourist can even help to look after the elephants with washing them and giving food.

In Asia an elephant is a symbol of wisdom.

The baby elephant in Taronga Zoo is Asian and his name is Luk Chai.
And tomorrow we can all see him when we go to the zoo.

Wandelen Mount Annan Botanic Gardens / Walking Mount Annan Botanic Gardens

We zijn vandaag naar Mount Annan Botanic Gardens gereden voor een leuke wandeling. De wandeling is 7 km and loopt door de Botanic Gardens en Cumberland Plains. In het begin zien we mooie struiken, bloemen, meertjes en heel veel mensen. Maar die mensen zitten gewoon te picknicken en als we eenmaal een stuk gelopen hebben, komen we niet veel andere mensen meer tegen en is het dus lekker rustig. We hebben veel plezier tijdens het wandelen (alleen zeurt Daan af en toe een beetje omdat hij niet meer verder wil lopen want Daan houdt niet zo veel van wandelen als Fleur). Onderweg zien we ook nog een wallaroo wat natuurlijk veel gemopper goed maakt. Eenmaal terug bij de auto spelen Fleur, Daan en Erik nog een potje baseball op de bijna lege parkeerplaats en kijken we nog naar de mooie vogels die hier rondvliegen.

Today we drove to Mount Anan Botanic Gardens for a nice walk. The walk is 7km and goes through the Botanic Gardens and Cumberland Plains. During the first part we see pretty bushes, flowers, ponds, lakes and a lot of people. But those people are just having a picnic and when we walk on a little bit longer, we do not see a lot of people anymore and it is nice and quiet. We are having a lot of fun while we are walking (only Daan is complaining sometimes that he does not want to walk anymore. Daan does not like walking as much as Fleur does). On our way we also see a wallaroo and that surely makes up for the complaining. When we are back at the car Fleur, Daan and Erik play some baseball in the almost empty parking area and we look at some of the beautiful birds that are flying around here.

Fleur school disco

Fleur heeft vanavond een disco op school. Met nieuwe kleren aan, haren netjes, wat lipgloss op en een Indiase bindi (zo’n glimsteentje) op haar voorhoofd is ze helemaal klaar om te dansen. Wij mogen niet blijven maar ze is ook groot genoeg om alleen plezier te hebben met haar vriendinnen. Ze heeft het erg leuk gehad.

Fleur has a disco at school tonight. With new clothes on, neat hair, some lip gloss on and an Indian bindi (little shiny stone) on her forehead she is ready to go dancing. We are not allowed to stay but she is old enough to have fun with her friend without us. She had a wonderful time.

BBQ met de overburen / BBQ with the neighbours across the road

Vanavond komen Jaki, haar moeder, Katrina, Alicia en Chris (Jaki’s jongste dochter en haar man) bij ons BBQ’en. Het is een erg gezellige avond met lekker eten veel goede gesprekken. Fleur en Daan vinden het ook heel erg gezellig. En zij vinden het helemaal geweldig als Alicia na het eten in het donker met ze op de trampoline gaat. Zaklampen mee en dan is de trampoline zelfs in het donker nog een feest.

This evening Jaki, her mum, Katrina, Alicia and Chris (Jaki’s youngest daughter and her husband) are coming over for a BBQ. We have wonderful evening with nice food and good conversations. Fleur and Daan are having a great time as well. And for them the best part of the evening is when Alicia joins them on the trampoline after dinner in the dark. They take the flashlights so even in the dark you can have a lot of fun on the trampoline.

Rugby Game in ANZ Stadium

Na snel thuis nog wat gegeten te hebben, vertrekken we met de auto naar het ANZ Stadium op Sydney Olympic Park voor een rugby wedstrijd. Fleur en Daan hebben een mooie geel met groene Aussie trui aan en Erik en ik hebben een geel met groene Aussie sjaal om. Zo komen we natuurlijk al goed in de stemming. Bij het stadion vragen we aan een van de beveiligingsmensen welke kant we op moeten lopen naar onze ingang. Helaas komen we er na een paar minuten lopen achter dat hij ons de verkeerde kant op heeft gestuurd en kunnen we weer helemaal terug de andere kant op lopen. Het is al erg druk als we in het stadion aankomen. Erik heeft de kaarten geregeld samen met collega Georgina en haar man Michael. Wij vinden al snel onze plekken hoog in het stadion en niet lang daarna zijn Georgina en Michael er ook. Het is een wedstrijd tussen Australië en Nieuw Zeeland. In het begin begrijpen we nog niet veel van de wedstrijd, maar tegen het einde beginnen we de regels een beetje door te krijgen. Fleur is op een gegeven moment ook helemaal op dreef en blijft roepen voor de Wallabies (het Australische rugby team). Helaas heeft het niet geholpen en verliezen we nog net. Jammer, maar het was wel erg leuk om een keer naar een wedstrijd te gaan met de kids in een groot stadion.

After a quick dinner at home, we take the car to the ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park for a rugby game. Fleur and Daan are wearing nice yellow with green Aussie hoodies and Erik and I have yellow with green Aussie scarves. This will help us getting the right spirit for the game. At the stadium we ask one of the security people which way we have to go to our entrance. Unfortunately after a few minutes we realize that he has sent us the wrong way and so we have to walk all the way back to go to the other side. It is already very busy when we get inside the stadium. Erik has booked our tickets together with his colleague Georgina and her husband Michael. We soon find our places high up in the stadium and not too long after Georgina and Michael arrive as well. It is a game between Australia and New-Zealand. When it starts we do not really understand much of the game, but towards the end we understand a little bit more. After a while Fleur is getting very enthusiastic and keeps on shouting for the Wallabies (the Australian rugby team). Unfortunately it did not work and we lost the game only just. It is a shame, but it was lots of fun to take the kids to a game in a big stadium like this.

Sport bij Blacktown Olympic Park / Sports at Blacktown Olympic Park

Bij het nieuwe Blacktown Olympic Park hebben ze vandaag diverse sporten die je kunt uitproberen en is er allerlei informatie te verkrijgen. Wij gaan ook even een kijkje nemen om te kijken of we misschien een leuke sport voor Daan kunnen vinden. De kids hebben veel plezier en ook Michael, Nicole en de kids komen. We kunnen niet te laat naar huis gaan, want we gaan vanavond naar een Rugby wedsrijd.

Today at the new Blacktown Olympic Park they are having different sports that you can try out and you can get lots of information. We are going to have a look there and maybe we can find a good sport for Daan. The kids are having a lot of fun and also Michael, Nicole and the kids are coming. We cannot go home too late, because tonight we are going to a Rugby game.

Daan is een giraf voor pre-school / Daan is a giraf for pre-school

Daan heeft vandaag bij pre-school een soort voorleesmiddag. Het thema is jungle dieren en de kinderen mogen allemaal verkleed naar pre-school komen. Daan gaat verkleed als giraf en vindt zelf dat hij er heel cool uitziet. En ik vind het ook best goed gelukt eigenlijk. Ze hebben allemaal een erg leuke middag.

Daan has the talespinners (reading stories) at pre-school today. The theme is jungle animals and all the children can come dressed as an animal to pre-school. Daan is going as a giraffe and he thinks he looks very cool. And I think I did a pretty good job as well. They all have a great afternoon.

Fleur kreeg twee awards / Fleur received two awards

Fleur kreeg vandaag bij de assembly twee awards. Een “Student of the Week award” en een “Gold award” (die krijg je als je drie Blue awards hebt gekregen). Ze is weer heel erg trots natuurlijk.

Fleur received two awards today at the assembly. A “Student of the Week award” and a “Gold award” (you get it when you have received three Blue awards). She is very proud of herself of course.

Naar de film en bbq'en / To the movies and having a bbq

We zijn vandaag naar de film Ice Age 3, Dawn of the Dinosaurs, in 3D. Hij is erg leuk en Fleur en Daan vinden het heel erg leuk om naar de bioscoop te gaan. Het is ook weer heerlijk winterweer vandaag, 28°C! Lekker hoor, en dus hebben we vandaag een lekkere bbq. Wat is het leven toch goed.

Today we went to see the movie Ice Age 3, Dawn of the Dinosaurs, in 3D. It is a very nice movie and Fleur and Daan really enjoy going to the cinema. We also have very nice winter weather today, 28°C! It is wonderful, and so we are having a bbq today. Life is truly good.

Doug is overleden / Doug has passed away

Onze goeie vriend en buurman Doug is overleden. Na een jaar lang tegen keelkanker gevochten te hebben.
In de twee jaar dat we in de straat wonen, hebben we een heel goed contact met de hele familie gekregen.
Het begint met een praatje als je elkaar op straat ziet, ze nodigden ons uit voor de lunch tijdens onze eerste kerst hier en van het een kwam het ander. Mariëlle is bevriend geraakt met een van de dochters, Katrina, en al snel hadden we een hele leuke band met de familie.
Dit alles is een hele belangrijke factor geweest in onze prettige integratie in Australië.
Doug werkte als vliegtuig onderhoudsmonteur bij Qantas en had wisselende 12 uurs diensten dus kwam je hem daardoor ook regelmatig overdag tegen. Een gezellige, aardige en vooral gewone vent. Bijvoorbeeld met die kerst lunch had hij een spijkerbroek en een t-shirt aan, en dit kan ik erg waarderen; iemand die geen uiterlijke schijn hoeft hoog te houden. Als je even binnenwipte om wat te vragen, had je snel al een biertje in je hand.
Op een gegeven moment ging ik bijna ieder vrijdag avond naar de overkant met mijn laptop om er Command & Conquer te spelen, online, met Doug, Des en ik tegen de familie in Melbourne.Veel slap geouwehoer, veel biertjes en veel plezier. Doug en de hele familie was en is altijd erg gastvrij.
Een jaar geleden werd Doug ziek en het ging met ups en downs. Op een gegeven moment leek het helemaal verdwenen, maar helaas, het kwam toch terug. In het begin was Doug nog veel thuis maar de laatste maanden alleen nog maar in het ziekenhuis. We konden niet altijd de kinderen meenemen maar die raakten ook gewend aan de slangetjes in zijn keel en aan zijn rare stem.
En vandaag hebben we afscheid genomen van Doug.
Het was heel mooi om tijdens de uitvaartdienst alle verhalen van vroeger te horen. Doug is voor zijn opleiding in Melbourne gaan wonen en raakte eerst bevriend met de broer van Jaki (z’n vrouw). Hij heeft een tijdje bij de familie in huis gewoond en is eigenlijk als een zoon opgenomen in dat gezin. We hadden daar al wel het een en andere over gehoord maar nu pas snapten we waarom de familie uit Melbourne zo nauw betrokken was en veel in Sydney was het afgelopen jaar.
Na de dienst was er een ‘wake’ (wat in Nederland een koffietafel heet). Koffie was er wel maar die is er niet veel gedronken. Moest er in het begin wel aan wennen want de koffietafels die ik in Nederland heb meegemaakt waren niet uitbundig. Deze wake was het wel. In plaats van te treuren om Doug’s dood, werd zijn leven gevierd. Wat mij betreft een veel betere benadering. Het afscheid blijft zwaar maar op zo’n manier wordt het wel wat verlicht.
Dankjewel Doug voor je vriendschap, voor je goeie en voor je slechte dagen.

Our good friend and neighbour Doug has passed away. After battling throat cancer for a year.
In the two years that we live in this street, we have become quite close with the whole family.
It starts with a chat when you see each other in the street; they invited us for lunch during our first Christmas here and one thing led to another. Mariëlle has become very good friends with their daughter Katrina.
All this has been an important factor in our excellent integration into Australia
Doug worked as an aircraft mechanic for Qantas and worked on a 12 hour shift basis, so we saw him a lot during the day as well. An overall very friendly and down to earth kind of guy. For example, during that Christmas lunch he wore jeans and a t-shirt; something I can appreciate very much; somebody who doesn’t need to keep up appearances. When you stopped by for a quick chat, a beer was close by.
After a while I went over almost every Friday night with my laptop to play Command & Conquer, online, with Doug, Des and myself against relatives in Melbourne. A lot of small talk, beers and fun. Doug and the whole family are always very hospitable.
About a year ago Doug fell ill and that went with ups and downs. At one point it seemed to have gone away but unfortunately it came back. Initially Doug was still home a lot, but later on mostly in the hospital. We couldn’t always take the kids with us but they too got used to the tubes in his throat and the strange voice.
Today we said goodbye to Doug. It was beautiful to hear the stories from Doug’s past during the memorial service. Doug went to Melbourne for his apprenticeship and at first became friends with Jaki’s brother. He moved in with the family and was welcomed into the family like a son. We had heard about this but now we understood why the family from Melbourne was so closely involved and a lot in Sydney the past year.
There was a wake after the service but that can’t be compared to similar events we were used to in Holland. Wakes there are more formal and a continuation of the mourning. The wake here was a celebration of Doug’s life. And as far as we are concerned that is a lot better. Saying farewell is still very hard but this makes it a little easier.

We gaan een weekend naar de sneeuw / We are going to the snow for a weekend

We gaan dit weekend lekker weg, naar de SNEEUW! Jawel hoor, dat kan hier ook echt. En het is niet eens al te ver rijden. Op ongeveer 5 uur rijden van hier ben je bij de eerste sneeuwgebieden. Wij gaan naar de Selwyn Snowfields. Daan gaat vandaag niet naar pre-school en Fleur halen we iets eerder van school. Dan kunnen we op tijd vertrekken en hopen we er voor het donker te zijn. Onderweg is het weer niet al te goed, flinke regenbuien, maar ook af en toe zon. Vlakbij onze bestemming huren we nog sneeuwkettingen in de hoop dat we die natuurlijk wel nodig hebben (helaas niet). Gelukkig zijn we voor het donker bij het huisje. Het is een eenvoudig huisje met één slaapkamer met een tweepersoons bed en een stapelbed en een eenvoudige keuken en badkamer, maar het is goed genoeg voor dit weekend want we zullen hier toch niet veel tijd doorbrengen. Voor het donker is, kunnen we nu nog heel even buiten de benen strekken, dan eten we nog wat en kunnen de kids naar bed. Er ligt hier geen sneeuw bij het huisje, maar het is wel behoorlijk koud. Michael, Nicole en de kids komen ook en ook Michael’s ouders en zijn zus met kids (die kennen we ook allemaal al).

We are going away for the weekend, to the SNOW! Yes, that is also possible here. And the drive there is not that long either. At about 5 hours driving from here you are at the first snow fields. We are going to the Selwyn Snowfields. Daan is not going to pre-school today and we pick up Fleur from school earlier then normal. So we can leave on time and hope to be there before dark. On our way there the weather is not too good, we have some bad rainfall, but also sunshine every now and then. Somewhere on the way we hire snow chains and of course we hope we will need them (but we don’t). Luckily we arrive at the cabin before dark. It is a simple cabin with one bedroom with a double bed and bunk beds and a simple kitchen and bathroom, but it is good enough for this weekend because we will not spent much time in here. Before dark we can have a quick walk outside, have dinner and then the kids can go to bed. There is no snow here at the cabin, but it is still pretty cold. Michael, Nicole and the kids are coming as well and so are Michael’s parents and his sister with her kids (we already know all of them).

Zaterdag 8 augustus 2009
Zaterdag staan we niet te laat op en vertrekken naar de snowfields. We hebben een lekker zonnetje en een strakblauwe lucht. Gelukkig is er ’s nachts nog sneeuw gevallen en kunnen we gelijk een sneeuwpop maken. Nicole had mij al eerder eens verteld dat ze vorig jaar ook hadden geprobeerd een sneeuwpop te maken, maar dat het niet was gelukt omdat ze niet precies wisten hoe ze een grote sneeuwbal moesten maken. Nou, dat kunnen wij, als echte Hollanders, ze natuurlijk wel even leren. De sneeuwpop lukt gelukkig goed en er worden ook veel sneeuwballen gevechten gehouden. We hebben onderweg naar de snowfields nog toboggans (platte sleetjes) gehuurd en we hebben onze slee uit Nederland ook meegenomen (is die tenminste niet voor niks mee gegaan in de container hè). De rest van de dag zijn de kids allemaal zoet met de heuvel af sleëen. Daan durft niet de grote heuvel af, maar vermaakt zich prima bij een wat kleinere heuvel. ’s Avonds gaan we met z’n allen (er is nog meer familie van Nicole daar met nog meer vrienden dus het is een behoorlijk grote groep) uit eten. Als we terug komen staat er een grote kangaroo op ons te wachten en echt een grote, als ‘ie rechtop staat is ie net zo groot als Jel. Anderen waren hem aan het voeren en we zijn er, op gepaste afstand, bij gaan staan. Op een gegeven moment komt er iets uit de boom gescheurd en graait een stuk brood weg en schiet weer terug in de boom: een possum. Er leuk om al die beesten van dichtbij te zien. Even later kwam de tweede possum ook nog kijken. Helaas was het voor de kinderen dan toch echt tijd om naar bed te gaan. Morgen nog een drukke dag.
Saturday 8 August 2009
On Saturday we are getting up on time and leave for the snowfields. We have nice sunny weather with a clear blue sky. Luckily last night it snowed and we can start making a snowman straight away. Nicole already told me before that they tried to make a snowman last year, but it did not work because they did not know exactly how to make a big snowball. Well, of course we, as real Dutchies, can show them how to do it. Lucky for us the snowman turns out really well and we have a snowball fight as well. On the way to the snowfields we hired toboggans and we also took our Dutch sled that we brought from Holland (at least we did not take it to Australia for nothing). The rest of the day the kids are having fun tobogganing. Daan does not want to go off the bigger hill, so he is having fun on a smaller one. In the evening we have dinner all together (there is more of Nicole’s family here and more friends, so we have a pretty big group). When we got back to the cabin, a big kangaroo was waiting for us and I mean a really big one. On it’s hind feet it is as big as Marielle. Others were already feeding it and we watch, from a safe distance. Suddenly something comes raising out of the tree, grabs a piece of bread and rushes back into the tree: a possum. A lot of fun watching all these animals close up. And soon a second possum comes and checks out the free bread. Unfortunately it is time for the kids to go to bed. Tomorrow is another busy day.

Zondag 9 augustus 2009
Zondag is alweer de laatste dag. De ochtend begint goed voor Fleur en Daan. Ze kunnen op het balkon vogels zonnebloempitjes voeren (in elk huisje staat een bakje). Het zijn mooie Crimson Rosella’s en Fleur en Daan vinden het helemaal geweldig. Goed begin van de laatste dag dus. We pakken daarna al onze spullen alvast in en gaan dan nog naar de snowfields voor wat laatste sneeuwpret. Er is jammer genoeg geen nieuwe sneeuw meer gevallen en er beginnen dus al delen groen door te komen. Maar er ligt gelukkig op de heuvel nog wel genoeg sneeuw om sleetje te rijden en de kids gaan nog op een speciale baan op dikke banden naar beneden. Daan durft dat niet en zegt dat hij dat volgend jaar wel zal doen (nou, dat heeft hij gezegd dus bij deze ook alweer geregeld, volgend jaar weer naar de sneeuw dus). En voor we naar huis gaan wordt er nog een laatste sneeuwballengevecht gehouden naast de parkeerplaatst waar nog lekker veel sneeuw ligt. Dan gaan we ons nog even omkleden bij de huisjes en is het echt tijd om naar huis te rijden.
We hebben echt een super leuk weekend gehad en het is zeker de moeite waard om naar de snowfields te rijden voor wat sneeuwpret. En Fleur en Daan willen zeker volgend jaar weer gaan, dus we zullen wel zien. Het was in ieder geval een echt winterweekend voor ons.

Sunday is already our last day. The morning starts very well for Fleur and Daan. They can feed the birds sunflower seeds on the balcony (in every cottage is a little tub with seeds). There are beautiful Crimson Rosella’s and Fleur and Daan are having a great time. After that we pack all our things and go to the snowfields again for some more snow fun. Unfortunately it has not been snowing last night so you already start seeing green bits through the snow. But on the hills there is still enough snow for tobogganing and the kids are going tubing as well. Daan does not want to go on that and says that he will do that next year (well, he is already planning our next trip to the snow, so, according to him, we are going again next year). And before we go home there is another big snowball fight next to the parking area where there is still a lot of fresh snow. Then we go change at the cabins and is it really time to drive back home.
We really had a wonderful weekend and it is definitely worth driving to the snowfields for some good snow fun. And Fleur and Daan are sure they want to go again next year, so we will see. At least we had a real winter weekend for a change.

Athletics Carnival school Fleur

Fleur heeft vandaag Athletics Carnival van school. En dit jaar is het niet gewoon op het schoolterrein, maar gaan ze met de bus naar Charlie Bali Reserve in Nurragingy Reserve. Daan en ik gaan ook kijken. Ze doen spelletjes en hebben hardloopwedstrijden. Tussendoor ga ik met Daan nog even naar zwemles en dan snel weer terug. Nicole komt ook kijken met Maia, en Daan en Maia kunnen dus ook fijn samen spelen. Als de kinderen weer terug naar school gebracht worden met de bus, mag Daan nog heel even in de speeltuin spelen en dan gaan we ook naar school om Fleur op te halen. Het weer was weer geweldig, dus het was een geslaagde en sportieve dag.

Today Fleur has Athletics Carnival with school. And this year they do not do it at school, but they take the bus to Charlie Bali Reserve in Nurragingy Reserve. Daan and I are going to have a look as well. They do games and have running competitions. In the morning I take Daan to swimming lessons as well and then rush back. Nicole and Maia are coming as well so Daan and Maia can have a play together. When the kids are being brought back to school with the bus, Daan can have a short play at the playground by himself and then we drive to school too to pick up Fleur. The weather was great, and so it was a very good and sportive day.

Disney on Ice "Princess Wishes"

Net als vorig jaar gaan we dit jaar ook naar Disney on Ice. Dit jaar heet het Princess Wishes. Heel veel prinsessen dus en ook de prinsen komen af en toe voorbij. Ook veel Tinkerbell dit jaar en dat vinden Fleur en Daan ook erg leuk. We hebben weer goede stoelen bijna vooraan aan de zijkant. We kunnen veel zien en het is echt genieten om zo een middagje weg te zijn. Fleur en Daan vinden het fantastisch (en wij stiekem ook wel hoor).

Just like last year we are going to Disney on Ice this year as well. This year it is called Princess Wishes. So there are a lot of princesses and every now and then you see the princes too. We also see Tinkerbell a lot and Fleur and Daan are very happy about that. Again we are sitting in a good spot, in second row and at the side of the rink. We can see a lot and it is really a lot of fun to be out on an afternoon like this. Fleur and Daan think it is fantastic (and we actually feel the same).

We wandelen de Hen en Chicken Bay / We walk the Hen and Chicken Bay

Het is echt weer een keer tijd voor een goede wandeling. We gaan de Hen en Chicken Bay rondlopen. We parkeren de auto in Abbotsford en nemen dan de ferry naar Cabarita. Van hier lopen we de hele Bay rond weer terug naar Abbotsford. Het is geen zware wandeling, alleen best een lange (9 km). Fleur en Daan lopen allebei zelf en het gaat erg goed. Het weer is heerlijk met een zonnetje en strakblauwe lucht. Het is fijn om weer eens een keer flink te wandelen en de route is aardig. Niet heel spectaculair, maar leuk genoeg. Met tegen het einde nog een speeltuin. Alleen is het al bijna donker nog voordat we bij de auto, dus besluiten we het laatste stukje af te korten en rechtstreeks naar de auto te lopen. Maar eerst komen we nog langs een Italiaans restaurantje en eten we nog even een lekkere hap. Daan heeft het grootste deel van de wandeling ook zelf gelopen dus dat gaat ook steeds beter en om Fleur hoeven we ons helemaal geen zorgen te maken. Die kan hele einden lopen en vindt het nog erg leuk ook. Het was wel weer een heerlijk dagje zo.

It is about time that we are going for a long walk. We will walk the Hen and Chicken Bay today. We park the car at Abbotsford and take the ferry to Cabarita. From here we walk the whole Bay back to Abbotsford. It is not a hard walk, just a pretty long one (9 km). Fleur and Daan are both walking themselves and it is going pretty good. We have wonderful weather with sunshine and a clear blue sky. It is very nice to go for a long walk again and the walk itself is nice too. Not very spectacular, but nice enough. And almost at the end is a playground. The only thing is that it is almost dark before we get to the car, so we decide to cut the last bit short and walk straight to the car. But first we pass by an Italian restaurant and we have a bite to eat. Daan has walked most of the walk himself so he is doing much better every time and with Fleur we have no worries at all. She can walk pretty long distances and she really loves it as well. It was a wonderful day.

Kids gaan weer naar school / Kids are going to school again

Wat gaan die twee weken vakantie toch snel voorbij. We hebben niet zo heel erg veel gedaan deze vakantie, maar dat is ook niet erg. Het is lekker geweest om ook thuis gewoon dingen te doen. Maar helaas is dat weer voorbij en zijn Fleur en Daan vandaag weer naar school en pre-school.

Two weeks of holidays are gone very quickly. We did not do much these holidays, but that is all right as well. It was nice to just do some things around the house. But unfortunately that is all over now and Fleur and Daan are back at school and pre-school today.

Owen komt bij ons spelen / Owen is coming over for a play

Owen (zoontje van Melissa en dus het neefje van Katrina) komt vanmiddag een paar uurtjes bij ons spelen. Fleur en Daan vinden het helemaal geweldig en Owen zelf vindt al dat speelgoed en al die aandacht ook wel heel leuk. Owen is helemaal weg van Fleur en die vindt dat natuurlijk geweldig. We spelen eerst een tijd binnen en buiten en gaan dan nog een rondje wandelen om het meer. We wandelen nog even langs Nicole’s huis (dat ligt op onze weg terug naar huis) en Talia, Boston en Maia spelen ook nog even met Owen, Fleur en Daan. Dan is het weer tijd om naar huis te gaan en wordt Owen alweer bijna opgehaald. Het was erg leuk om even zo’n klein jochie erbij te hebben.

Owen (little son of Melissa and so Katrina’s nephew) is coming to play at our home for a couple of hours this afternoon. Fleur and Daan think it is great and Owen enjoys all the toys and attention as well. Owen loves Fleur and she of course thinks that is very cool. We play inside and outside for a while and then go for a walk around the lake. We also walk past Nicole’s house (that is on our way back home) and Talia, Boston and Maia play with Owen, Fleur and Daan for a little while. Then it is time to go back home because it is almost time for Owen to be picked up. It was very nice to have a little boy at home for a little while.

Naar de film en Navreet komt spelen / To the movies and Navreet is coming over to play

Fleur, Daan en ik gaan vandaag naar de nieuwe Hannah Montana film. We gaan in Rouse Hill en gaan naar de vroege ochtendvoorstelling. Het is erg rustig in de bioscoop en we genieten van de heel erg leuke film. Daarna lopen we nog een beetje door het winkelcentrum en gaan dan naar huis. We halen onderweg Navreet (Fleur’s vriendinnetje) op om bij ons te komen spelen. En zo is er weer een vakantiedag voorbij.

Fleur, Daan and I are going to the new Hannah Montana movie today. We are going in Rouse Hill and go to the early morning movie. It is very quiet in the cinema and we enjoy the movie a lot. After that we walk through the shopping centre for a little while and then go home. On the way home we pick up Navreet (Fleur’s friend) to come and play at our house. And so another day of the holidays has past.

Movie day bij Kaila

Fleur gaat vandaag naar Kaila, want die heeft een film feestje. Er komen meer vriendinnen om film te kijken en te spelen. Erg gezellig natuurlijk.

Fleur is going to Kaila today, because she is having a movie party. There will be more friends to watch a movie and play. They have a lot of fun.

Lekker winterweer / Nice winter weather

Fleur en Daan kunnen ook vandaag weer lekker buiten spelen want het is een heerlijke winterdag. De temperatuur loopt op tot 23°C en dat is natuurlijk genieten midden in de winter.

Fleur and Daan can also play outside today because it is a wonderful winter day. Temperatures are rising to 23°C and that is super in the middle of winter.

Naar Homebush met Nicole en de kids / To Homebush park with Nicole and the kids

Zoals we wel vaker doen in de vakantie, gaan we ook deze vakantie met Nicole en de kids naar Homebush. Lekker buiten zijn en genieten van het mooie weer. Spelen in de speeltuin, fietsen en steppen. De kids vermaken zich prima en het is een heerlijke en mooie dag.

As we often do during the holidays, we are going to Homebush with Nicole and the kids. Being outside and enjoying the nice weather. Playing in the playground, cycle, and racing around on the scooters. The kids are having a great time and it is a very nice day.

Spelen in een park in Penrith / Playing at a park in Penrith

We moesten vandaag even naar een outdoor winkel in Penrith en daarna gaan we nog even naar een park in de buurt. Daar was een speeltuin waar Fleur en Daan zich even kunnen uitleven en wij genieten van de rust. We zien de zon ondergaan en daarna gaan we richting huis. Lekker om even buiten geweest te zijn in dit heerlijke winterweer.

We had to go to an outdoor shop in Penrith today and after that we went to a park close by. There was a playground where Fleur and Daan could run around and play and we could enjoy the peace and quiet. We see the sun set and after that we drive back home. It was nice to be outside and enjoy this wonderful winter weather.

Kids hebben twee weken vakantie / Kids have two weeks holidays

De kids hebben weer twee weken vakantie. Hopelijk krijgen we mooi weer zodat ik nog wat leuke dingen kan gaan doen met Fleur en Daan.

The kids have two weeks holidays. Hopefully we will have nice weather so I can do fun things with Fleur and Daan.

Concert Katie Noonan / Music gig Katie Noonan

Ik ben vanavond met Katrina, Melissa (haar zus) en een paar andere vrienden van Katrina naar een concert geweest van Katie Noonan (een redelijk bekende Australische zangeres en middelste op de foto). Ik had tot vanavond nog nooit van haar gehoord, maar moet zeggen dat ze erg goed zingt. Alles was live en ze zong liedjes die waarschijnlijk op haar nieuwe album komen te staan dat volgens mij pas volgend jaar uit gaat komen. We hebben het erg leuk gehad en ik ben blij dat ik mee ben gegaan.

Tonight I went with Katrina, Melissa (her sister) and a couple of other friend of Katrina’s to a music gig of Katie Noonan (a pretty famous Australian singer and the one in the middle on the picture). Until tonight I had never heard of her, but I have to say that she is a very good singer. Everything was live and she sang songs that are probably going to be on her new album that I think will be out next year. We had a great time and I am very glad I went with them.

Pyjama en pannenkoeken feest pre-school / Pyjama and pancake party at pre-school

Vandaag heeft Daan een pyjama en pannenkoeken feest op pre-school. Alle kinderen moeten in hun pyjama naar school komen, en sloffen en ochtenjassen mogen ook mee. Ook de juffen zijn voor het feest in pyjama op pre-school. Dat is natuurlijk erg leuk om te zien en de kinderen vinden het allemaal erg grappig. En dan hebben ze de hele middag feest. Doen ze leuke dingen en eten pannenkoeken en ander lekkers. Daan heeft het erg leuk gehad.

Today Daan has a pyjamas and pancake party at pre-school. All the children have to come to pre-school in their pyjamas, and they can bring their slippers and bath robes as well. The teachers are also wearing their pyjamas for the party at pre-school. That is very nice to see and the children think it is all very funny. And then they are having a party all afternoon. They do fun things and eat pancakes and other yummy things. Daan had a great time.

We zijn allemaal ziek / We are all sick

Dit was geen goede week voor ons. Het begon maandag met Fleur die zich niet lekker voelde en langzaamaan door de week heen zijn we allemaal ziek geworden. En jammer genoeg zijn we het nu allemaal nog steeds. Hopen maar dat volgende week een betere week zal zijn voor ons.

This was not a good week for us. It started on Monday with Fleur who was not feeling well and during the week we all got sick. And unfortunately we are all still sick. Hopefully next week will be a better week for us.

De haren van Fleur zijn geknipt / Fleur had a hair cut

Fleur vond het tijd worden voor een nieuw kapsel. Ze vond het leuk om lang haar te hebben, maar wilde het ook wel eens korter hebben. Dus zijn we gisteren naar de kapper geweest om het te laten knippen. En dit is het resultaat.

Fleur thought it was time for a hair cut. She liked having long hair, but wanted to have it shorter for a change. So we went to the hair dresser yesterday to cut her hair shorter. And this is the result.

Daantje Spikkelbil / Daan Spotty Bum

Tijdens ons weekend in Kangaroo Valley hadden we al gezien dat Daan allemaal spikkels op zijn buik en rug had. We dachten eerst dat het misschien wel door de warmte in het huisje kwam (te veel kleren aan en dan voor de open haard gaan zitten spelen). Maar eenmaal thuis had hij het nog steeds en het zat inmiddels ook op zijn billen. Dus toch vandaag maar even naar de dokter gegaan. En het blijkt dat hij een virus heeft (een soort lichte vorm van de vijfde ziekte). Het is inmiddels al niet meer besmettelijk, maar we houden hem toch nog maar een paar daagjes thuis omdat mensen vast gaan denken dat hij iets engs heeft. En we noemen hem nu “Daantje Spikkelbil” wat hij eigenlijk helemaal niet zo leuk vindt. Maar het zal wel snel over zijn.

During our weekend in Kangaroo Valley we saw that Daan had a lot of red spots on his tummy and back. At first we thought it might be heat in the cottage (wearing too many clothes and playing in front of the fire place). But when we were back home he still had it and it had spread to his bum as well. So we went to see the doctor just to be sure. And it seems that he has a viral infection (a light version of a sort of fifth disease). By now it is not contagious anymore, but we will keep him home for a few more days because people might think he has something bad. And we call him “Daan Spotty Bum” now which he does not really like. But it should be over soon now.

Een weekend naar Kangaroo Valley / A weekend to Kangaroo Valley

We gaan dus dit weekend lekker weg. We gaan naar Kangaroo Valley. De reis er naartoe verloopt goed en we zijn net op tijd in Kangaro Valley waar we nog de sleutel voor ons huisje “Magnolia Cottage” op moeten halen. Als we bij het huisje komen, blijkt het geen huisje maar een enorm huis te zijn. Het is geweldig mooi, heeft 3 slaapkamers, een keuken met klein zitgedeelte, een eetgedeelte in een serre en een lounge kamer met een open haard. We pakken even snel de auto uit en gaan dan eventjes op de veranda zitten. Het is wel fris, maar we hebben een erg mooi uitzicht, dus dan maakt het niet uit. Het is alleen ook niet zo heel erg mooi weer dus we hopen voor morgen op iets beter weer.

So we are going away this weekend. We are going to Kangaroo Valley. Our trip there is going well and we arrive in Kangaroo Valley just in time to pick up the key of our cottage “Magnolia Cottage”. When we arrive at the cottage, it appears to be not just some little cottage but it is huge. It looks wonderful, it has 3 bedrooms, a kitchen with a small lounge area, a separate dining area and a lounge room with a fire place. We quickly unpack the car and sit on our verandah. It is a bit chilly, but we do have a lovely view, so it does not really matter. And the weather is not that great either so we are hoping for better weather tomorrow.

Het weer is niet heel erg veel beter vandaag, maar we gaan er gewoon het beste van maken. We hebben genoeg warme kleding bij ons en ook de regenjassen. We gaan eerst naar het dorpje Kangaroo Valley. We rijden over de bekende Hampden Bridge (een hangbrug), drinken wat in het dorpje en kijken een paar winkeltjes. Ondanks de wolken en af en toe regen gaan toch gewoon de mooie natuur hier bekijken. Lekker in een droge warme auto van de ene waterval naar de andere rijden.
Onze eerste stop nu is bij Manning Lookout. Nou heb je vanaf een lookout normaal een mooi en ver zicht over de omgeving, maar niet vandaag. Er hangen veel lage wolken en het lijkt net of we naar de sneeuw zijn gegaan. Een wolkendeken hangt over de hele vallei. Het is wel een heel erg mooi en mysterieus gezicht. En de wolken verdwijnen al wel een beetje zodat je af en toe ook door de wolken heen het dal in kunt kijken.
Daarna rijden we naar Fitzroy Falls. Hier loopt een pad langs de bovenkant van de waterval en langs diverse lookouts. De waterval is mooi van boven, maar vanaf het eerste lookout kun je de waterval al bijna niet meer zien door alle wolken. En ook bij de laatste lookout waar we heen, Richardson Lookout, zien we bijna alleen maar wolken.
De laatste waterval waar we vandaag naartoe gaan is Belmore Falls. Je staat hier aan de andere kant van een dal en hebt dan mooi uitzicht op de waterval. Alleen jammer dat het ineens flink gaat regenen. Dus lopen we even snel met de paraplu naar de lookout om toch nog even snel een foto te maken. Het is wel een heel erg mooie en hoge waterval dus het was wel even de moeite waard dat we zijn gaan kijken.
Inmiddels is het al later in de middag en besluiten we even naar Robertson te rijden. Hier drinken we eerst iets in een pub en dan eten we ook nog wat voor we weer terug rijden naar ons huisje.
Ondanks de regen was het toch wel een lekkere dag en we gaan lekker bij de open haard zitten spelen, tekenen en tv kijken. We zullen allemaal wel goed slapen vannacht.

Unfortunately the weather is not a whole lot better than yesterday, but we are going to make the best of it. We brought enough warm cloths and rain coats. First we go to the town centre of Kangaroo Valley. We drive over the famous Hampden Bridge (a suspension bridge), have a drink in town and look in some nice little shops. Even though there are lots of clouds and it is raining every now and then we are going to have a look at the wonderful nature here. In a warm and dry car we drive to all the waterfalls.
Our first stop now is Manning Lookout. Usually you would have a great view of the surroundings, but not today. There are lots of low hanging clouds and it looks more like we went to the snow. A big blanket of clouds is hanging over the valley. It is very beautiful and a bit mysterious to see. And the clouds are already starting to disappear a little bit so every now and then we can have a peak through the clouds and look into the valley.
After that we drive to Fitzroy Falls. There is a path here that goes past the top of the waterfall and past some lookouts. The waterfall is very nice from the top, but from the first lookout it is almost impossible to see the waterfall because of all the clouds. And also at the last lookout we go to, Richardson Lookout, you can almost only see clouds.
The last waterfall we go to today is Belmore Falls. You can see the waterfall from across a little valley and that gives you a great view of the waterfall. Unfortunately it is starting to rain. So we take our umbrellas and just have a quick look and take some pictures. It is a very beautiful and very high waterfall, so it was worthwhile going to see it.
By now it is late in the afternoon and we decide to drive to Robertson. Here we have a drink in a pub and have something to eat before we drive back to our cottage.
Even though it was raining, we still had a nice day and now we are just enjoying the rest of the evening at the fire place; playing, drawing and watching tv. I think we will all sleep very well tonight.

Onze laatste dag alweer en we moeten vanmorgen dus eerst al onze spullen inpakken. Dan weer even de sleutel afgeven in Kangaroo Valley en dan rijden we nog naar Carrington Falls. Dit is toch wel de mooiste en grootste waterval die we gezien hebben dit weekend. Er loopt weer een pad langs mooie lookouts en vandaag zijn de wolken gelukkig weg en hebben we mooi uitzicht.
Daarna rijden we naar Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk. Dit is een ijzeren brug die tussen de boomtoppen is gemaakt. Je loopt hier dus hoog boven de grond en kunt helemaal tot aan de kust kijken. Sommige plekken hebben geen palen onder het pad en het wiebelt dus lekker. Het is erg leuk om zo hoog te lopen en van het mooie uitzicht te genieten. Een leuke afsluiter van een mooi en erg gezellig weekendje weg.

It is our last day already and so we have to pack our stuff this morning first. Then we have to hand back the key in Kangaroo Valley and drive to Carrington Falls. This is for sure the nicest and biggest waterfall we have seen this weekend. There is also a path here that goes past nice lookouts and luckily today there are no clouds so we have a good and nice view.
After that we drive to Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk. This is an elevated walkway in between the treetops. So you walk very high above the ground and you have a view all the way to the coast. Some places do not have poles under the pathway so it is a bit wobbly. It is very nice to walk this high and enjoy the wonderful views. A good ending to a great weekend away.
