Vuurwerk kijken / Watching the fireworks

Omdat dit onze eerste Nieuwjaarsavond is in Sydney, vinden we eigenlijk dat we toch wel naar het beroemde vuurwerk moeten gaan kijken. Gelukkig hebben ze hier ook familie vuurwerk om 21.00 uur want 24.00 uur met de kids is toch wel een beetje laat. We vertrekken om 17.15 uur naar Salton Reserve in Drummoyne. Rond 18.00 uur zijn we er. We gaan op een aflopend grasveld zitten waar we mooi uitzicht hebben over de baai en zelfs de bovenkant van Harbour Bridge kunnen zien. We hebben eten meegenomen in de koelbox zodat we kunnen picknicken. Jammer genoeg waait het wel erg hard en is het daardoor best fris. Gelukkig hebben we vesten meegenomen. We eten eerst lekker en dan gaan Fleur en Daan nog even spelen. Naar beneden rennen en dan weer naar boven klimmen is natuurlijk erg leuk. En er zitten twee aardige jongedames vlak voor ons die Fleur en Daan ook wel erg leuk vinden. Ze gaan gezellig bij hun zitten en kletsen honderduit. Zo is het toch nog snel 21.00 uur. Gelukkig maar, want 3 uur wachten is best lang. Het vuurwerk is heel erg mooi, en door de hele baai heen kun je zien dat ze overal precies hetzelfde vuurwerk afsteken. Het is alleen een beetje jammer dat het maar 8 minuten duurt. Maar het was zeker de moeite waard. We hebben het erg leuk gehad. Thuis om 24.00 uur steken de kids nog sterretjes af en kletsen we nog even met opa, oma, en tante Sandra in Woerden. In de straat is verder helemaal niemand buiten dus daarna gaan we lekker naar bed. Het nieuwe jaar kan beginnen!

Because this is our first New Years Eve in Sydney, we think it is a good idea to watch the famous fireworks. Luckily they also have family firework at 9pm here, because 12 pm is a bit too late for the kids. We leave the house at 5.15 pm to go to Salton Reserve in Drummoyne. Around 6 pm we are there. We go sit on a grassy hillside from where we have a beautiful view of the bay and we can even see the top of the Harbour Bridge. We brought some food with us so we can have a picnic. Unfortunately there is a lot of wind tonight so it is a little chilly. Luckily we brought some sweaters. We have the picnic and after that Fleur and Daan go play on the hillside. Running down and climbing up again is really fun. And there are two nice ladies sitting in front of us and they really like Fleur and Daan. They go sit with them and talk a lot. So soon it is 9 pm. We are glad, because waiting for 3 hours is a long time. The fireworks are really beautiful, and we caqn se that they have the same fireworks through the whole bay. Unfortunately it only lasts for 8 minutes. But it was really worth while. We had a lovely time. At home at 12 pm the kids lighted some sparkles and we talked to grandpa, grandma and aunt Sandra in Woerden (in Holland). In our street it is really quit and there is nobody outside, so after that we are going to bed. Let the new year begin!

Wandelen bij Killarney Heights / Walking at Killarney Heights

Het is weer mooi weer vandaag, en dus gaan we wandelen bij Killarney Heights. We zetten de auto neer in een straatje waar een paadje naar de route toe gaat. Het pad is niet overal even duidelijk, maar al snel zien we het paadje naar Flat Rock Beach. Daar gaan we ook vast even kijken. Dan kunnen we daar na het wandelen misschien nog even gaan zwemmen. Het is nu vloed en er is van het strandje bijna niks over. Misschien is er straks meer strand, nu eerst lopen. We lopen een stukje richting Magazine Tracks, maar het pad gaat alleen maar over grote rotsen en het is echt heel erg lastig lopen. Met Daan op de rug en Fleur erbij gaat dit niks worden, dan zijn we echt uren onderweg. Dus besluiten we gewoon een stuk de andere kant op te lopen, langs Killarney Point. Gelukkig is dat een gewoon paadje, zonder grote rotsblokken. Onderweg horen en zien we ook nog een paar kookaburra’s. Fleur had net gezegd dat ze het wel jammer vond dat we de kookaburra’s af en toe wel eens horen, maar nooit zien. Maar nu konden we ze goed zien zitten in de bomen waar we onder liepen. En nu hebben we ze dus gezien, echt super leuk. We lopen door totdat we een paar mooie uitkijkpunten hebben gehad. Geweldig uitzicht over Middle Harbour. Dan nemen we een pad wat een eind omhoog loopt zodat we weer in Killarney Heights uitkomen. Daar gaan we even rustig in de schaduw wat eten en drinken. Daarna lopen we door Killarney Heights naar de auto. Misschien hadden we beter hetzelfde pad weer terug kunnen nemen, want nu lopen we de hele tijd in de zon en moeten we steeds naar beneden en naar boven lopen en dat is erg zwaar. We hebben nog wel een keer uitzicht op Sydney, dat is wel erg mooi. Bij de auto trekken we zwemkleren aan en lopen we nog een keer naar het strandje. Er is nu wel meer strand en dus gaan we even lekker afkoelen in het water. Fleur en Daan vinden het geweldig en het water is heerlijk, maar wel een beetje vies. Als ik dan ook nog kleine kwallen in het water zie, is de lol er toch wel een beetje vanaf. We spelen nog even in het zand en lopen dan weer terug naar de auto. Het was een lekker dagje.

The weather is good today, so we are going for a walk at Killarney Heights. We park the car in a little street from where you can walk to the track. It is not always clear which way we have to go, but soon we find the track that leads us to Flat Rock Beach. We have a look at the beach as well, because we may go for a swim after our walk. It is high tide and there is hardly any beach at all. Maybe when we come back later there will be a bigger beach, first we walk. We walk for a short while to Magazine Tracks, but the track goes over big rocks en it is pretty difficult to walk. With Daan on the back and with Fleur walking herself this is not going to work, it will take us forever. So we decide to walk a part of the track to the other side, past Killarney Point. Luckily this is an easy path, without big rocks. When we walk there we hear and see a few kookaburras. Fleur just said that she would like to see a kookaburra, because we sometimes hear them but we never see them. And now we did, that was really nice. We walk until we have passed two lookouts, with great views over Middle Harbour. Then we take a path that goes up, back to Killarney Heights. There we sit quietly in the shade and have something to eat and drink. After that we walk back to the car through the streets of Killarney Heights. Maybe it would have been better to take the same track back as we came on, because now we walk in the sun the whole time and we have to walk up and down and that is tougher than we thought. We do have a nice view over the centre of Sydney. When we arrive at the car we put on our swimsuits and walk down to the beach again. There is a bigger beach right now and we cool off in the water. Fleur and Daan enjoy it a lot and the water is really nice, but a bit dirty. When I also spot a few jellyfish in the water, I do not really like it anymore. We play in the sand for a while and walk back to the car. It was a good and fun day.

Onze eerste Kerstmis in Australië / Our first Christmas in Australia

Het is eerste Kerstdag. En Kerstmis hier betekent kadootjes van de Kerstman onder de kerstboom. Daan wordt als eerste wakker. Hij komt bij ons de kamer oplopen en zegt dat een grote rommel is onder de kerstboom (dat zijn natuurlijk alle mooi ingepakte kadootjes van de Kerstman). Als Fleur wakker wordt, mogen de kadootjes eindelijk uitgepakt worden. En dat is natuurlijk groot feest. Als alles is uitgepakt, moeten alle kadootjes nog uit de verpakking worden gehaald en dat is ook een hele klus. Maar daarna kunnen ze dan eindelijk met alle leuke nieuwe kadootjes spelen. Tussendoor ontbijten we ook nog even en verder hebben we een heerlijk rustige ochtend. Rond 13.00 uur wordt er op de deur geklopt. Het is Jacky, onze overbuurvrouw. Zij vraagt of we het leuk vinden om bij haar en haar man Doug te komen lunchen. Een van hun dochters is er ook met haar man. We gaan ons dus even snel aankleden en dan gezellig lunchen bij de overburen. Rond 17.00 uur gaan we weer naar huis. Daan en Erik gaan even in bed liggen, Fleur gaat een spelletje doen op haar nieuwe Leapster en ik ga televisie kijken (en een beetje dutten op de bank). Omdat het veel te laat is om nog een uitgebreide maaltijd klaar te maken, besluiten we om maar gewoon simpel macaroni te eten. Een heerlijk kerstmaal. Daarna spelen Fleur en Daan nog even met hun nieuwe speelgoed (Fleur weer met haar Leapster en Daan met zijn garage en nieuwe auto’s). Een fijne afsluiting van een rustig dagje.

It is Christmas day. And Christmas here means presents from Santa Claus under the Christmas tree. Daan is the first to wake up. He comes into our room and tells us that it is a big mess under the Christmas tree (that are of course all the nicely wrapped presents from Santa). When Fleur wakes up, it is finally time to unwrap all the presents. And that of course is a lot of fun. When all the presents have been unwrapped, we have to get everything out of the boxes and that is a lot of work. But after that they can finally play with all their great new presents. We also have some breakfast and enjoy our quit and peaceful morning. Around 1 pm someone’s at the door. It is Jacky, our neighbor from across the street. She asks us if we want to have lunch with her and her husband Doug. And one of their daughters is also there with her husband. We quickly get dressed and have a very nice lunch with our neighbors. Around 5 pm we go back home. Daan and Erik go to bed, Fleur is playing a game on her new Leapster and I am going to watch television (and take a little nap on the couch). Because is too late to make a big Christmas dinner, we decide to just eat macaroni. A lovely Christmas dinner. After dinner Fleur and Daan go play with their new toys (Fleur with her Leapster again and Daan with his garage with new cars). A good end of a nice and quit day.

De laatste schooldagen voor de zomervakantie / De last school days before summer holiday

Deze week was de laatste schoolweek voor Fleur. Ze hebben deze week niet zo heel erg veel meer gedaan. Als ik aan Fleur vroeg was ze hadden gedaan die dag zei ze meestal: we hebben een film gekeken. Maar ja, ik denk ook niet dat ze nog zo heel erg veel meer hoeven te leren in de laatste week voor de zomervakantie. Woensdag hadden ze ook nog Party Day. Ze deden leuke spelletjes, hebben kerstversieringen gemaakt en ze kregen allemaal leuke dingetjes mee naar huis en veel snoep. Dat was dus nog een erg leuke dag. En vandaag was dan de allerlaatste schooldag voor de vakantie. Als we Fleur om 15.00 uur op gaan halen op school, lopen net alle drie de kleuterklassen het plein voor de hal op. Daar wachten ze op de bel die aangeeft dat ze naar huis mogen gaan. En dan is het echt voorbij. Het waren een paar leuke en heel leerzame maandjes op school voor Fleur, maar ze is nu ook wel heel erg blij dat het vakantie is. Tot 30 januari 2008 dus even geen school. We gaan nu genieten van de zomervakantie.

This was the last school week for Fleur. They did not do much this week. When I asked Fleur what they did that day she mostly answered: we watched a movie. But I think that they do not have to learn a lot more in the last week before summer holiday. Wednesday they had Party Day. They did some fun games, they made Christmas decorations and they got a lot of nice things and candy to take home. So that was a really fun day. And today is the very last school day before the holiday starts. When we pick up Fleur from school at 3 pm, all the kindergarten kids walk to the covered area in front of the hall. There they wait for the bell that will tell them that they can go home. And then it is really over. Fleur had a couple of fun and educational months in school, but now she is really glad that the holiday starts. Until 30 January 2008 she does not have to go to school. We are going to enjoy the summer holiday.

Rondje watervallen in de Blue Mountains / Roundtrip to waterfalls in the Blue Mountains

We gaan weer wandelen in de Blue Mountains vandaag. We vertrekken eerder dan normaal omdat we het liefst niet op het heetst van de dag willen lopen. Onderweg stoppen we in Glenbrook bij de Tourist Information Centre en nemen daar nog wat folders en boekjes mee van New South Wales. Dan rijden we door naar Lawson waar we een wandeling langs vier watervallen gaan maken. Na een paar honderd meter lopen, komen we een man tegen die tegen ons begint te praten. Hij woont aan de rand van dit stuk natuurgebied en wil ons graag de eerste waterval laten zien. Onderweg vertelt hij dat hij 9 kinderen heeft en dat zijn oudste dochter van 18 jaar zwanger is en hij dus opa zal worden (hij is pas 40 jaar). Ook verteld hij dat hij een hersentumor heeft en daar al een keer aan geopereerd is (hij had ook een groot litteken op zijn hoofd van een operatie). Deze man loopt dus met ons mee naar de eerste waterval, Adelina Falls. Hij vertelt ons ook nog wat dingen over de natuur. Het is heel erg mooi hier. En omdat het regelmatig heeft geregend de laatste tijd is de waterval ook erg spectaculair. En de zon schijnt er mooi doorheen dus het is helemaal perfect hier. We zijn erg onder de indruk. Daarna lopen we weer een stukje terug tot we bij een splitsing komen en wij de route verder willen lopen. Onze “vriend” zegt dat het 8 km is naar de laatste waterval, maar in ons boekje staat dat de route 3 km is. En omdat de andere routes die we gelopen hebben uit het boekje ook klopten gaan we hier onze eigen weg. Onderweg zijn er af en toe wat lastige stukjes bij omdat het door de regen soms wat glad en modderig is, maar het gaat toch heel goed. Daan moppert in het begin nog wel dat hij het eng vindt en terug wil, maar als we bij de tweede waterval aankomen vindt hij het toch wel heel erg leuk. Fleur doet het ook heel erg goed en vindt alles geweldig. Bij de tweede waterval, Junction Falls, eten we ook even een boterham en drinken we nog wat. Deze waterval lijkt wel over een brede stenen trap naar beneden te komen. Heel erg mooi. Daarna lopen we over een bruggetje en zien we nog een deel van de waterval. En dan lopen we weer door naar de volgende waterval, Federal Falls. Bij deze waterval is een soort strandje. Daan gaat ook even uit de rugdragen en samen spelen Fleur en Daan even bij het water van de waterval. Hier gaan we nog wel een keer naartoe als het heel erg warm is, dan kunnen de kids fijn met het koude water spelen en wij lekker rustig zitten en genieten. Daan vindt het niet leuk als hij weer de rugdrager in moet, maar we willen toch echt weer verder lopen. Op naar de vierde en laatste waterval, Cataract Falls. Weer een grote en brede rots waar het water aan alle kanten naar beneden komt. Heel erg mooi. Hier is ook een soort grot waar je eventueel met slecht weer zou kunnen schuilen. Maar het weer is prima vandaag en omdat het bij de watervallen wat koeler is dan tijdens het lopen, koel je ook heerlijk af. Na de laatste waterval moeten we nog een stuk terug lopen naar de auto. We komen nog langs een paar uitkijkpunten. Bij eentje hebben we nog zicht op de Cataract Falls. Deze wandeling was echt super mooi. We hebben genoten en de kids ook. We vinden het echt geweldig dat we zulke mooie wandeling kunnen maken op maar 45 minuten rijden van ons thuis.

We are going for a walk in the Blue Mountains today. We leave a little bit earlier than the other times because we prefer not to walk at the hottest time of the day. On our way to the walking track, we stop at the Tourist Information Centre in Glenbrook to get some more brochures of New South Wales. After that we drive to Lawson where we are going to walk a track past four waterfalls. When we walked a couple of hundred meters, we run in to a guy who starts talking to us. He lives close to where the track starts en he wants to show us the first waterfall. On our way to the waterfall he tells us that he has 9 children and that his oldest daughter of 18 years old is pregnant and so he will be a grandpa soon (he is only 40 years old). He also tells us that he has a brain tumor and that he already has been operated once (he has a big scar on his had from that operation). So this man walks with us to the first waterfall, Adelina Falls. He also tells us some things about the nature here. It is really beautiful here. And because of all the rain the last weeks, the waterfall is really spectacular. And the sun shines through the waterfall which makes it really perfect here. We are very impressed. After that we walk back for a while until we arrive at a junction. There we want to follow the rest of the track. Our “friend” says that it is 8 km to the last waterfall, but our book says that the track is 3 km. And because with all the other routes we walked, the book was always right, we go our own way from here. During the walk we have some difficult parts (slippery and muddy because of the rain), but everything goes well. Daan sometimes complains and tells us that he is scared and that he wants to go back, but when we arrive at the second waterfall he does really like it. Fleur is also doing really well and she loves all the walking. At the second waterfall, Junction Falls, we have something to eat and drink. With this waterfall it looks like the water is running down a very big stairway. Really beautiful. After that we walk over a footbridge and we see another part of the waterfall. Then we walk on to the next waterfall, Federall Falls. At this waterfall there is nice little beach. Daan goes out of his child carrier and together Fleur and Daan play near the water. We will be coming back here another time when it is really warm, so the kids can play with the cold water and we can sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful nature. Daan gets really upset when he has to get back in the child carrier, but we really want to start walking again. On to the fourth and last waterfall, Cataract Falls. Another big rock where the water runs down everywhere. Really nice. There is something that looks like a cave where you can seek shelter when the weather is bad. But the weather is fine today and because it is cooler at the waterfalls than it is during walking, you can cool off every time. After the last waterfall we have to walk for a while back to the car. We walk past a couple of lookouts. From one lookout we have a really nice view over Cataract Falls. This walk was really wonderful. We enjoyed it a lot and so did the kids. We really love it that we can go for such great walks at only 45 minutes drive from our home.

Uitstapje met de playgroup / Going somewhere with the playgroup

Omdat het vandaag de laatste keer playgroup is voor de zomervakantie, gaan we met alle kindjes ergens naartoe. We gaan naar de Mean Fiddler (een restaurant) waar ze een kinderspeelplaats hebben. Daar kunnen de kindjes fijn spelen. Ook Lavender Lily is er. Zij knutselt een toverstafje met de kinderen, schminkt ze en ze heeft een bellenblaasmachine. Daan vindt het echt heel leuk allemaal. Hij wordt geschminkt als een tijger met zelfs zijn nagels zwart zodat het lijkt of hij klauwen heeft. Heel erg mooi hoor. Tussendoor eten we ook nog frietjes. Rond 13.15 uur gaan we weer naar huis. Het waren een paar gezellige uurtjes.

Because we have the last playgroup before summer holiday, we take the kids somewhere else. We go to the Mean Fiddler (a restaurant) where they have a playground for the kids. There they can play. Also Lavender Lily is there. She makes magic sticks with the kids, paints their faces and she has a bubble machine. Daan likes it all. He gets his face painted as a tiger and even his nails are painted black so they look like claws. It looks really nice. We also eat fries there with all the kids. Around 1.15 pm it is time to go home. We had a nice couple of hours.

Presentation Night van Fleur's school / Presentation Night of Fleur's school

Om 18.30 uur vanavond was er Presentation Night van de school van Fleur. Het werd gehouden in een andere school omdat ze daar een grote ruimte hebben waar alle ouders en kinderen in kunnen. Tijdens de presentation night worden er verhalen verteld over het afgelopen schooljaar. Treden er kinderen op met zang en dans. En er worden allerlei awards uitgereikt, voor bijvoorbeeld sport, schooldirecteur awards, leraren awards en nog veel meer. En de kinderen van de kleuterklassen (dus Fleur ook) krijgen een soort diploma voor het goed afronden van de kleuterschool. Ze mogen per klas op het podium komen en krijgen dan het certificaat uitgereikt. Helemaal trots is Fleur natuurlijk. En wij ook want dit betekent dat Fleur het goed genoeg heeft gedaan op school in deze twee maanden om na de zomervakantie naar year 1 (groep 3 in Nederland) te gaan. Heeeeeel erg goed gedaan Fleurtje!!!

Tonight at 6.30 pm we had Presentation Night from Fleur’s school. The presentation night was held in a different school because there they have a bigger hall that would fit all the parents and children. During the presentation night they tell stories about the past school year. Some children will sing or dance. And they give different kind of awards, for example for sports, principal’s awards, teacher’s awards and lots more. And all the children from kindergarten (so also Fleur) get a certificate of graduation for successfully completing kindergarten. They get onto the stage with the whole class to receive the certificate. Fleur is really proud. And so are we because this means that Fleur did well enough at school these last two months to go to year 1 after the summer holiday. Really well done Fleurtje!!!

Een flinke hagelbui / A hailstorm

We zitten vanmiddag gewoon rustig binnen. Daan ligt in bed te slapen, Fleur is lief aan het spelen en Erik en ik rommelen wat met de computer. Ineens begint het heel hard te waaien en te regenen. Dat is niet zo vreemd, want dat gebeurt wel vaker. Maar ineens horen we ook meer herrie op het dak van onze overkapping achter buiten. We gaan voor buiten kijken en het begint ineens flink te hagelen. Er landt een hagelsteen ter grootte van een sjoelschijf (ook die vorm) in het gras. Tussendoor zet Erik nog snel de auto in de garage want we zitten niet echt te wachten op een poffertjespan. Het waait zo hard dat de hagelstenen de hele garage (ongeveer 3-4 meter diep) doorvliegen. Maar zo snel als het komt, is het ook weer weg. Het is ook gelijk weer erg warm en de hagelstenen zijn met een half uurtje allemaal gesmolten. We kijken wel nog buiten naar het onweer dat een eindje achter ons huis langstrekt. En Daan ligt nog steeds te slapen. Later horen we op het nieuws dat er echt noodweer is geweest. Veel mensen hebben gaten in het dak van hun huizen (dakpannen kapot geslagen) en beschadigde auto’s. Wij hebben dus wel geluk gehad. Aan de beschadigde huizen kunnen we zien dat het ongeveer 800 meter achter ons huis langs is getrokken. Ook het gebied waar we gisteren zijn gaan wandelen is flink getroffen. We moeten voortaan dus extra goed de weersvoorspellingen in de gaten houden voor we gaan wandelen, want vaak is er geen plek om te schuilen. Maar het blijft een rare gewaarwording om zo’n hagelbui midden in de zomer te zien.

This afternoon we are just hanging around the house. Daan is a sleep, Fleur is playing quietly with her toys and Erik and I are doing things at the computer. All of a sudden the wind is blowing hard and it is starting to rain. That alone is not so strange, that happens more often. But all of a sudden we hear a lot of noise on the roof over our terrace. We have a look at the front of our house and there is already some hail on the grass. There is a big hailstone about 4 cm big and with the shape of a disc in the grass. In the mean while Erik puts the car in the garage because we do not want it damaged. The wind is blowing so hard, the hailstones are flying through the garage (about 3-4 meters). But as soon as it arrived, it is also over. When the storm is gone, the temperature is quickly rising and after about half an hour, all the hail has melted. Outside we have a look at the thunderstorm that passes. And Daan is still asleep. Later the news tells us that it was really bad weather. A lot of people have damaged houses (smashed roof tiles) and damaged cars. So we are really lucky. Looking at the damaged houses, the storm past our house at about 800 meters. Also the area that we walked in yesterday is seriously hit. The next time we go for a walk we have to watch the weather predictions really carefully, because most of the times there are no places to seek shelter. But the fact is that it is really strange to see such a big hailstorm in the middle of the summer.

Wandelen in het Excelsior Park bij Baulkham Hills / Walking in Excelsior Park at Baulkham Hills

Eigenlijk hadden ze regen voorspelt voor het weekend. Maar omdat het vandaag droog is en niet zo heel erg warm besluiten we om nog een stukje te gaan wandelen. We gaan niet te ver weg. Na even wat op de kaart te hebben gekeken, besluiten we te gaan wandelen bij Baulkham Hills, in het Excelsior Park. Er moet een paadje lopen naar een klein riviertje. We nemen eerst het verkeerde paadje. Nou ja, het is eigenlijk niet eens een pad. Maar na even zoeken, hebben we het echte paadje gevonden. Omdat het de laatste dagen best veel heeft geregend, is het op sommige plekken best modderig en liggen er plassen. We moeten eerst een heel stuk over allemaal stenen die als een soort trap naar beneden lopen. Beneden komen we dan uit bij het riviertje. We besluiten linksaf te gaan. Het is vandaag heel vochtig weer en toch warmer dan het eigenlijk leek te zijn. We hebben hier nu een beetje het gevoel alsof we in een tropisch regenwoud lopen. Helaas is door de regen van de laatste tijd de oversteek door het riviertje onder water komen te staan. En omdat de schoenen van Fleur niet waterdicht zijn, besluiten we om er niet doorheen te gaan. We lopen terug en lopen dan ook nog een stuk door de andere kant op. Ook hier komen we op en gegeven moment bij een gedeelte waar we eigenlijk door het water moeten. Dus besluiten we maar om de weg terug te lopen naar de auto. Onderweg zien we ook nog een grote hagedis (ongeveer 50 cm lang) aan de andere kant van het water. We lopen dus echt in de natuur met alle beesten die hier leven. Als we weer bijna boven zijn, wordt Erik nog in zijn arm gestoken of gebeten door een insect. Het doet behoorlijk pijn en onbewust lopen we nu een stuk harder door naar de auto. Wat het voor een beest geweest is, weten we niet. Maar gelukkig was de pijn na een tijdje een stuk minder en heeft hij er verder geen last meer van gehad. De wandeling was echt heel erg mooi. Jammer alleen dan we niet het riviertje over konden steken. Misschien een andere keer als het niet zoveel heeft geregend.

They said that it was going to rain this weekend. But because it is not raining today and it is not too warm, we decide to go for a little walk. We do not want to go too far. After looking at the map a little, we decide to go to Baulkham Hills, to the Excelsior Park. There has to be a little path that goes to a creek. First we take the wrong path. Well, it actually is not really a path. After we have looked around, we find the right path. Because of all the rain of the past days, some places are really slippery and there are puddles of water. The first part we have walk on rocks that lay like a stairway down. When we arrive at the end of that stairway we are at the creek. We decide to go left there. The weather is really humid today and it is actually warmer than we thought it was. We have the feeling now that we are walking in a tropical rainforest. Unfortunately because of all the rain lately, we cannot walk to the other side of the creek. And because Fleur’s shoes are not water resistant we cannot walk through. So we walk back and decide to walk to the other side. But here it is the same. We have to go through the water to follow the track. So we walk the way back to the car. On our way back we see a big lizard (about 50 cm long) at the other side of the creek. We are really nature walking with all the animals that live here. When we are almost at the top again, Erik gets stung or bitten by an insect. It really hurts and we walk a little faster to the car. We have no idea what kind of insect it was. But luckily the pain was not that bad anymore and it was gone the next day. We really liked this walk. It only was too bad that we could not go through the creek. Maybe another time, when it has not rained that much.

Games Day op school / Games Day at school

Vanmiddag heeft Fleur op school Games Day. Dit wordt georganiseerd door klas 6. Ook kinderen uit klas 5 helpen mee. Je kon tokens (papieren muntjes) kopen voor de kids en met die tokens kunnen ze dan van alles doen daar. Ze hebben spelletjes, je kunt je laten schminken, je haar een kleurtje laten spuiten, je nagels laten lakken, je haren mooi laten maken en nog veel meer. Je mag als ouders ook komen en dus gaan Daan en ik er ook heen. Fleur loopt rond met Gemma (een vriendinnetje uit haar klas). Ze hebben nog niks gedaan als wij er zijn, maar nu gaan ze van alles doen. Ze doen een paar spelletjes, ze laten hun gezicht schminken (Daan ook), hun nagels lakken, hun haren een kleurtje spuiten (Daan ook), en ze maken een kerstboomversiering. Aan het einde is er ook nog een disco waar ze ook nog even gaan dansen. En dan is de middag alweer voorbij. We helpen nog even met opruimen bij de klas van Fleur en dan gaan we naar huis. Het was een heel erg leuke en gezellige middag en de kids hebben genoten.

This afternoon Fleur had Games Day at school. This is being organized by year 6. Also kids from year 5 will help. You could buy tokens (paper coins) for the kids and they could do different things with the tokens. They have games, you can let them paint your face, spray a color in your hair, polish your nails, make your hair beautiful and lots of other things. As a parent you can also come and so Daan an I will go to school also. Fleur is walking around with Gemma (a friend from her class). They have not done anything yet when we arrive, but now they will do a lot of things. They do some games, they will have their faces painted (Daan also), their nails polished, their hair sprayed in a nice color (Daan also), and they make a nice Christmas tree decoration. At the end they also have a disco where they go and dance for a while. And then the day already ended. We help cleaning up outside Fleur’s classroom and then we go home. We had a really nice and fun afternoon and the kids have enjoyed it a lot.

Wandelen bij Balmoral / Walking at Balmoral

Omdat het vandaag mooi weer wordt, besluiten we te gaan wandelen bij Balmoral (op aanraden van iemand die in hetzelfde gebouw werkt als Erik). We parkeren de auto bij Balmoral Park vanwaar we een route gaan lopen naar Chowder Bay. Het eerste stuk bestaat uit een hele lange trap omhoog waar je lekker in de zon loopt. Het is weer goed warm en het is dus even afzien. Gelukkig is het laatste stukje met trappen tussen de bomen door en lijkt het ineens net of je in het oerwoud loopt. Als we boven zijn, hebben we heel erg mooi uitzicht op Manly en Watsons Bay. We stoppen onderweg nog bij de Gunners’ Barracks, gebouwd rond 1870 zodat de vijand niet de baai naar het centrum van Sydney kon bereiken. We drinken en snoepen wat en Fleur en Daan rennen even lekker rond. Met de trap het heuveltje op en dan naar beneden lopen (of rennen als papa je opvangt voor je valt). Ook hier is het uitzicht weer echt fantastisch. Je kunt vanaf hier zelfs downtown Sydney zien. Heel mooi. Daarna lopen we door naar Chowder Bay. Daar drinken we wat, eten een ijsje en beginnen dan weer aan de weg terug. Omdat Fleur wel de lange weg terug naar de auto wil lopen, doen we dat dus ook. We lopen nog via Middle Head Oval, maar daar is verder niks aan, dus lopen we terug naar de weg die ons weer naar de trappen brengt. Nog even naar beneden lopen en dan zit onze flinke wandeling voor vandaag er weer op. Het was een mooie wandeling en dus een fijne dag.

Because the weather is going to be good today, we decide to go for a walk at Balmoral (recommended by someone who works in the same building as Erik). We park the car at Balmoral Park from where we are going to walk to Chowder Bay. The first part is a very long stairway up, and we are walking in the sun. It is pretty warm, so this part of the walk is killing. Luckily the last part of the stairs we walk under trees and it looks like we are walking in a tropical forest. When we arrive at the top, we have a great view over Manly and Watsons Bay. We also stop at Gunners’ Barracks, built around 1870 to make sure that the enemy could not reach the centre of Sydney. We have a drink and a snack and Fleur and Daan run around. They take the stairs up the little hill and walk down (or run down if dad will catch you before you fall). The view here is also fantastic. You can even see downtown Sydney from here. Really beautiful. After that we walk to Chowder Bay. We have a drink, eat an ice cream and start our way back. Because Fleur wants to take the long way back, we do. We walk through Middle Head Oval, but there is nothing to do here, so we walk back to the road that will bring us back to the long stairway. We only have to walk down now and before we end our walk for today. The walk was really beautiful and we had a nice day.

Tweede award voor Fleur / Second award for Fleur

Bij de Assembly vandaag, heeft Fleur weer een award gekregen. Ze kreeg een Blue (Merit) Award omdat ze heel goed haar best had gedaan met lezen in de groep. Ze is hier ook echt beter in geworden en de juf vond dat zo goed dat ze een award kreeg. Apetrots was ze natuurlijk dat ze een tweede award heeft gekregen. Heel erg goed gedaan Fleurtje. We zijn heel erg trots op je!

With the Assembly today, Fleur received another award. She got a Blue (Merit) Award for her effort in reading in groups. She has really improved her reading and her teacher thought she deserved an award. Fleur was really proud that she received a second award. Well done Fleurtje. We are really proud of you!

Naar het Aquarium en Darling Harbour / To the Aquarium and Darling Harbour

Omdat de weersvoorspellingen niet zo goed zijn, gaan we vandaag naar het Sydney Aquarium. Heel erg leuk natuurlijk. En we hopen dat het niet zo heel erg druk zal zijn vandaag omdat er vandaag gestemd moet worden voor de verkiezing van Prime Minister. We gaan met de trein. Dat is natuurlijk al een feest op zich. Helaas is het wel erg druk bij Aquarium, maar we gaan toch naar binnen want we hebben het de kids natuurlijk beloofd. Ze vinden al die vissen natuurlijk helemaal geweldig. Fleur vindt ook vooral de tunnels waar je onder de haaien, roggen en andere grote vissen doorloopt erg leuk. Daan vindt hier alleen niks aan en is eigenlijk een beetje bang. Iedere keer dat er een grote vis boven ons zwemt of als er een rog op het glas boven ons ligt, begint Daan hard te roepen dat hij weg wil uit de tunnel. Het is op een gegeven moment wel heel erg druk in de tunnels, dat is wel een beetje jammer. Ook de glasplaten waar je over kunt lopen vindt Daan erg eng. Hij blijft mooi op de randjes staan, en als hij er dan al op gaat lopen, schuifelt hij er heel voorzichtig overheen. Fleur vindt het helemaal niet eng en staat zelfs op het glas te springen. Als we alles hebben gezien, mogen Fleur en Daan nog even spelen in de speel- en klimruimte. Daarna gaan we naar buiten en wandelen we over de brug over Cockle Bay en over Darling Harbour. Het weer is toch nog heerlijk en het is erg gezellig. We eten ook nog wat in een Italiaans Restaurant en dan lopen we weer terug naar de trein. Het Aquarium was erg leuk en de dag was weer heel gezellig.

Because the weather forecast is not that good, we are going to the Sydney Aquarium today. Really fun of course. And we hope that it is not so busy today because it is Election Day for a new Prime Minister. We go by train. That by itself is a party for the kids. Unfortunately it is really busy at the Aquarium, but we are going inside because we promised the kids. They really love all the fish of course. Fleur especially likes the tunnels where you can walk under sharks, stingrays and other big fishes. Daan does not like these tunnels at all and he is even a little afraid. Every time a big fish swims over his head or when a stingray is laying on the glass, he starts to cry and says that he wants to go out of the tunnel. Daan is also really afraid to walk over the glass floors they have at another part of the aquarium. He will not move and stands still between the glass plates, and when he steps on the glass, he moves really slowly. Fleur is not afraid at all and she is even jumping on the glass. When we have seen everything, we let Fleur and Daan play for a while in the play corner. After that we go outside and walk on the bridge over Cockle Bay and around Darling Harbour. The weather turned out really nice. We have dinner at an Italian Restaurant and than we walk back to the train station. The Aquarium was really fun and we had a nice day.

Daan en mama gaan naar playgroup / Daan and mum go to playgroup

Vandaag ben ik met Daan naar een “playgroup” geweest. Wij gingen mee met Nicole, Boston en Maia (moeder, broertje en zusje van Talia, vriendinnetje van Fleur). Deze playgroup is in het zaaltje waar ze op zondag kerkdienst hebben van de Baptist Church, en er waren dus allemaal mensen die ook naar die kerk gaan. Het was wel heel erg gezellig en Daan vond het ook heel erg leuk om een keer met andere kindjes te kunnen spelen. Ze hadden ook wat speelgoed liggen en een glijbaantje dus dat is altijd wel leuk. Eerst werd er dus gewoon gespeeld, daarna werd er een soort knutselspelletje gedaan (ze hadden plaatjes van dieren en moesten daar de juiste voeten bij zoeken), daarna werd er wat gesnackt (fruit, rijstewafels, rijstekoekjes, kaas) en toen nog met z’n allen een beetje dansen en gek doen. Het waren een paar gezellige uurtjes en Daan vond het echt heel erg leuk en ik ook. Volgende week gaan we waarschijnlijk wel weer mee met Nicole en de kids.

Today I have been to “playgroup” with Daan. We went with Nicole, Boston and Maia (mother, brother and sister of Talia, Fleur’s friend). This playgroup is held in the room where they have church on Sunday of the Baptist Church, and so there were more people there that go to that church. We really enjoyed ourselves and Daan also liked playing with the other kids. They had different sorts of toys and there was a slide and that is always fun. First they could just play, than we did some arts and craft (they had pictures of animals and had to find the right feet with the animals), and after that we had morning tea (with fruit, rice cakes, little rice crackers, cheese) and then we danced and did crazy. We had a nice couple of hours and Daan really enjoyed it. Next week we will probably go again with Nicole and the kids.

Wandelen bij Euroka in de Blue Mountains / Walking near Euroka at the Blue Mountains

We gaan vandaag wandelen in de Blue Mountains. We rijden via Glenbrook naar Euroka. We moeten zelfs met de auto door het water rijden. Maar goed dat we een AWD auto hebben. Bij Euroka begint, bij de Daruk camping area, de route naar de Nepean River. Zoals meestal het geval is, gaan we ook vandaag weer te laat van huis weg. Daardoor beginnen we pas rond de middag met wandelen. Dat is natuurlijk geen goed idee als het erg heet is. Maar de wandeling is wel lekker. We lopen eerst een stuk door het bos en langs een soort ravijn. Heel erg mooi allemaal. Dan komen we bij de splitsing die naar de Nepean River loopt. Dit is een hele kronkelende trap naar beneden met af en toe een klein houten bruggetje. Soms voelen we ons net in het oerwoud of het regenwoud. Helaas als we bij de rivier aankomen, blijk je daar niet echt goed te kunnen zitten. Er zijn alleen maar grote rotsblokken en dan begint het water al. Even op een rots zitten dus en wat eten en drinken. Dan begint de flinke klim naar boven weer. Het is echt heel heet en het is dus flink ploeteren. Maar we komen wel boven. Dan is het verder alleen nog maar bijna vlak terrein. We lopen nog wat door het bos en af en toe lekker in de zon te bakken. Voor Fleur wordt het op een gegeven moment een beetje te warm en heeft ze er niet zoveel zin meer in. We stoppen even in de schaduw en drinken nog wat. Dan lopen we toch maar verder. Als we weer bij de auto aankomen zijn we oververhit en moe. We pakken een kleed uit de auto en gaan lekker in de schaduw zitten. Even uitrusten en nog wat eten en drinken. Daan rent lekker rond want die heeft de hele wandeling bij Erik op de rug in de rugdrager gezeten. Fleur gaat op een gegeven moment ook maar lekker meespelen. Ik zie hier ook mijn eerste kangaroo in het wild rondlopen. Je schijnt ze daar wel vaker te zien dus we gaan hier nog wel een keer meer naartoe. We rijden hierna nog naar de Mt Portal Lookout. Hier heb je een heel fantastisch uitzicht over de Nepean River. Je kunt ook Sydney zien vanaf hier. Het is echt heel erg mooi en heel stil. Geweldig. Daarna gaan we naar huis want we zijn moe van het wandelen en de hitte. Het was een lekker dagje.

We go walking in the Blue Mountains today. We drive through Glenbrook to Euroka. We even have to drive to water to get there. So we are lucky that we have an AWD car. At Euroka, at the Daruk camping area, the trail to the Nepean River starts. Like most of the times, today we also leave too late. So we start walking around noon. That of course is not a very good idea when it is very hot. But it is a really nice walk. First we walk through the forest and next to some sort of ravine. It is really beautiful. Then we arrive at a junction that leads to the Nepean River. The steps are going down hill and at some places there is a little bridge. Sometimes it feels like being in the jungle or the rainforest. Unfortunately there are no places where you can sit and relax at the river. There only are some big rocks and then the water starts. So, we sit on the rocks and eat and drink something. Then the climb up starts. It is really hot and it is a little bit of a struggle. But we make it back up again. Then there is almost only flat terrain. We walk parts through the wood and sometimes we walk in the burning sun. After a while Fleur gets too hot and she does not really want to walk any further. We stop in the shade for a while and have another drink. And then we just walk on. When we arrive at the car we are really tired and over heated. We take a picnic blanket from the car and sit and relax in the shade. We rest and have something to eat and drink. Daan is running around because he was on Erik’s back in the child carrier the whole walk. After a while Fleur is also playing with Daan. Here I see my first kangaroo in the wild. They say that you can see them very often here so we will be coming back here some day. Before going home we drive to the Mt Portal Lookout. From here you have a fantastic view over the Nepean River. And you can also see Sydney from here. It is really beautiful and quit. Wonderful. After that we are going home because we are really tired from walking and from the heat. We had a nice day.

Een vriendinnetje komt spelen / A friend comes over to play

Vandaag kwam Talia bij ons spelen. Dat is een vriendinnetje uit de klas van Fleur. Na school is ze gelijk met ons mee naar huis gegaan. Omdat het zulk warm weer was, hebben ze eerst een waterijsje gegeten en daarna zijn ze zich gaan verkleden. Ze hadden het erg leuk samen. Soms vond Fleur even dat Talia ergens niet aan mocht zitten, maar het ging eigenlijk allemaal erg goed. Toen ze eindelijk helemaal verkleed waren, was het tijd dat Talia’s mama haar op zou komen halen. Omdat ze eigenlijk de hele tijd alleen maar bezig waren geweest met verkleden en opmaken, was Fleur heel erg teleurgesteld dat Talia al opgehaald werd en ze niet nog even konden spelen in de verkleedkleren. Dat uitte zich jammer genoeg in een vreselijke driftbui van Fleur. Heel erg jammer want ze hadden zo lief gespeeld. Gelukkig vond Talia het niet zo erg en willen ze wel graag nog een keer samen spelen. Hopelijk gaat het afscheid de volgende keer beter.

Today Talia came to play at our house. She is a friend of Fleur from school. After school she walked home with us. Because it was a really warm day, they first ate an ice block and after that they were dressing up. Sometimes Talia touched things that Fleur did not want her to touch, but everything went well. When they are finally completely dressed up, it is almost time for Talia’s mum to pick her up. Because they were only busy dressing up and putting on make-up, Fleur was really disappointed that it was already time for Talia to be picked up by her mum and that they could not play outside anymore. Unfortunately she got really upset and angry. That was a bit sad because they played so nice together. Luckily Talia did not mind and they definitely want to play together another time. Hopefully next time the saying goodbye will go better.

Inentingen voor Daan / Vaccinations for Daan

Vandaag ben ik met Daan weer naar de dokter geweest voor een paar inentingen. Hij kreeg een inenting voor waterpokken en voor pneumococcen (die wordt tegenwoordig ook in Nederland gegeven). De dokter keek ook nog even in zijn computer wat Daan allemaal voor inentingen zou moeten krijgen en daar stond waterpokken niet bij. Toch maakte hij al wel de verpakking met de vloeistof open. Toen vertelde hij dat hij waarschijnlijk al te oud was om het zo te krijgen en dat je dan normaal gesproken (als het niet in het inentingsprogramma zit) $ 50,00 (€ 30,00) zou moeten betalen. Maar dat hoefde dan (om weet ik wat voor vage reden) toch niet. Was ik natuurlijk ook niet van plan, want als ik er extra voor zou moeten betalen, zou hij die inenting gewoon niet krijgen, net als in Nederland. De eerste prik ging nog redelijk goed. Hij spoot het spul er wel wat langzaam in dus Daan begon al wat tegen te stribbelen en een beetje te huilen. Bij de tweede prik ging het minder goed. Omdat hij nu natuurlijk wist wat er ging gebeuren, bleef Daan niet echt meer stil zitten. Ik had hemzelf en zijn arm wel vast, maar die wist hij toch nog wat los te trekken met als gevolg dat er wat vloeistof langs zijn arm liep en de naald er ook uitging. De dokter snauwde toen tegen mij: je houdt hem ook niet stil!!! Dat vond ik toch wel een heel vreemde reactie. Want als hij zelf de arm van Daan ook vast had gehouden, was er niks aan de hand geweest. Maar goed, daarna ging het toch nog goed. Daan heeft maar heel even gehuild en ging daarna gelijk weer spelen. Nu zijn we dus ook trots op Daan omdat hij zo’n grote jongen was vandaag. Maar die dokter..... misschien toch maar een andere zoeken.

Today I went to the doctor with Daan for vaccinations. He got vaccinations for chicken pocks and for pneumococcen (they give them in Holland as well). The doctor looked in the computer system to see which vaccinations Daan should have and chicken pocks was not on the list. But he opened the package with the fluid anyway. Then he told me that Daan probably was too old to get it and that you normally have to pay $ 50.00 (€ 30.00) for it (when the vaccination is not in the vaccination program). But we did not have to pay it (the reason I do not know). I was not planning to pay, because if I had to pay extra, he would just not get the vaccination, like in Holland. The first injection went pretty well. He injected the fluid a little slow, so Daan was starting to struggle and cry a bit. With the second injection it did not go that well. Because Daan knew what was going to happen, he would not sit still anymore. I was holding him and his arm pretty tight, but he managed to pull it away and a little bit of the fluid ran over his arm and the needle got out. The doctor snapped at me: “you should hold him still”!!! I thought that was a really strange reaction. Because if he had held Daan’s arm to, everything would probably have gone well. But it finally went okay. Daan only cried a little while and than he started playing again. So, we are also proud of Daan because he was such a big boy today. But the doctor…… maybe we should look for another one.

Fleur's eerste verjaardagsfeestje / Fleur's first birthday party

Vandaag had Fleur haar eerste verjaardagsfeestje, van Charlotte, een meisje uit haar klas. Alle meisjes uit haar klas waren uitgenodigd en ze had er dan ook heel erg veel zin in. Voor ons was het ook wel een beetje spannend omdat het voor haar toch net iets anders is dan in Nederland naar een feestje gaan. Want hier verstaat ze natuurlijk niet iedereen goed. Het feestje was in een zaal waar meedere kinderen hun feestje hadden en er werd gedanst, lekkere dingen gegeten en limonade gedronken. Hier in Australië is het heel normaal als je als ouders ook bij het feestje blijft. Maar omdat ik dacht dat ze dan te veel naar ons toe zou trekken, hadden we met Fleur afgesproken dat we gewoon weg zouden gaan. En dus bleef Fleur alleen bij het feestje. Ze heeft erg veel plezier gehad en de mama van Charlotte zei ook dat Fleur heel goed mee had gedaan met alles en dat ze alleen maar vrolijk was geweest. Ze had ook netjes antwoord gegeven als er iets aan haar werd gevraagd. Heel fijn dus, op naar het volgende feestje?!?

Today Fleur had her first birthday party. It was Charlotte’s, a girl from her class. All the girls from her class were invited and so she was really looking forward to it. For us it was also a little exciting because a party here is a little different than a party in Holland. Because here she cannot understand everyone really well. The party was in a big hall with a lot of other children celebrating their birthday, and they danced, and ate and drank a lot of nice things. Here in Australia it is common that the parents also stay at the party. But because I thought Fleur would participate better with all the fun things if we were not there, we did not stay. And Fleur stayed at the party alone. She had lots of fun and Charlotte’s mum told us that Fleur really participated well with everything and that she was happy the whole time. She also answered all the questions the kids asked her. So, that went really well. We wait for the next party to come?!?

Spelen in de regen / Playing in the rain

Het regent de hele week al pijpestelen en dus ook vandaag (jaja, ook hier regent het af en toe flink). Dus als we Fleur moeten ophalen van school regent het nog steeds flink. Daan krijgt zijn regenjas en regenlaarzen aan en die van Fleur nemen we ook mee. Als we weer thuis zijn blijf ik nog even in de regen, onder de paraplu, met de overbuurvrouw praten. Fleur en Daan gaan in de goot in het water stampen. Dat is erg leuk omdat de straat hier een beetje naar beneden loopt en het regenwater dus heel hard naar beneden stroomt. Ondertussen komt ook Shivani (een buurmeisje van 13 jaar) thuis uit school. Zij gaat ook met de kids mee springen en dansen in het water. Ook het buurmeisje van de andere kant (zij is 8 jaar) komt thuis en gaat ook haar regenjas aandoen en mee buiten spelen. Zo wordt het dus een hele gezellige “kletsnatte” middag. Op een gegeven moment regent het niet meer zo hard, maar het blijft nog steeds leuk om met emmertjes en schepjes met het water te spelen. Uiteindelijk is het al 17.30 uur als we eindelijk naar binnen gaan. Fleur en Daan gaan dan gelijk in bad want ze zijn nat tot en met hun ondergoed. Een lekker “nat” maar gezellig middagje eindigd warm, droog en lekker binnen.

The whole week it is raining cats and dogs and also today (yes, here it is also raining really hard sometimes). So when we have to pick up Fleur from school it is still raining pretty hard. Daan puts on his raincoat and his rain boots and we take Fleur’s raincoat and rain boots with us. When we arrive home I talk, under my umbrella, with our neighbor from across the street. Fleur and Daan go play in the gutter. That is really fun because the street is going a little bit downhill and so the rain is flowing downwards really fast. Meanwhile Shivani (neighbor girl who is 13 years) comes home from school. She also starts jumping and dancing in the water with the kids. Also the neighbor girl from the other side (who is 8 years) comes home and puts on here raincoat to play outside. So it is a really fun “soaking wet” afternoon. After a while the rain is getting less, but it is still fun to play with buckets and shovels in the water. It is already 5.30 pm when we finally go inside. Fleur and Daan go straight into the bathtub because even their underwear is wet. It was a fun “wet” and nice afternoon that is ending warm and dry inside the house.

De assembly op vrijdag bij Fleur op school wordt iedere week “gepresenteerd” door één klas. Deze vrijdag werd dat gedaan door de klas van Fleur. Ieder kind uit de klas krijgt dan op maandag een papiertje mee naar huis met een stukje dat ze dan thuis moeten voorbereiden voor vrijdag. Fleur had een kort zinnetje omdat haar Engels (lezen) natuurlijk nog niet zo heel goed is. Maar ze mocht in ieder geval ook meedoen, en ze was er heel enthousiast over. Daan en ik zijn gaan kijken bij deze assembly. Het was een assembly met alleen de kleuterklassen en klas 1. De hele klas van Fleur heeft de hele assembly (ongeveer 30-45 minuten) op het podium gezeten. Als er dan iemand aan de beurt was om zijn stukje voor te lezen (op te zeggen) moest diegene naar de spreekdesk (met microfoon) lopen en daar het stukje oplezen. Toen Fleur aan de beurt was, liep ze heel stoer naar de spreekdesk en heeft ze haar stukje heel luid en duidelijk opgelezen. Volgens mij was het zelfs, voor mensen die haar niet kennen, niet te horen dat ze pas net twee maanden in Australië woont. Ze vond het ook nog erg leuk, en dat is maar goed ook, want er wordt hier veel meer gedaan aan spreken in het openbaar. Ze heeft het heel goed gedaan en wederom zijn we heel trots op haar. Weer goed gedaan Fleur!!!

The assembly on Friday at Fleur’s school is “presented” every week by one class. This Friday it was Fleur’s class that did the presentation. Every child from the class got a piece of paper with the words that they had to prepare at home for Friday. Fleur had a short sentence because her English (reading) is, of course, not that well yet. But she was allowed to be a part of the presentation, and she is really excited about it. Daan and I went to the assembly to see how it would go. The assembly was only with the kindy classes and first grade. Fleur’s whole class had to sit on stage for the whole assembly (about 30-45 minutes). When it was somebody’s turn to read (say) their lines, that child had to go to the speech desk (with microphone) and read their lines. When it was Fleur’s turn, she walked to the speech desk and read her line loud and clear. I think that people, who do not know her, could not hear that she only has been lives in Australia for two months. She also really liked it, and that is great, because they do a lot about speaking in public here. She did a really good job and again we are very proud of her. Again well done Fleur!!!

Nederlanders in Australië / Dutch people in Australia

Hoewel ik voor wij naar Australië vertrokken altijd heb gezegd dat ik geen contact ga zoeken met Nederlanders, moet ik nu toegeven dat het soms ook wel leuk is om even met mensen te praten die hetzelfde meemaken of hebben meegemaakt als wij nu. En zo kwamen vandaag Ewald, Nicole en Timo bij ons op visite. Zij zijn vrienden van de ouders van Emma, die in Nederland bij Fleur in de klas zat. Via haar ouders zijn wij in contact gekomen met deze mensen. Zij zijn in juni met een permanent visum naar Australië verhuisd. Het was vandaag dus heel erg gezellig. Omdat je allemaal dezelfde dingen meemaakt, heb je ook wel veel te bespreken. Ook voor de kinderen was het wel erg leuk om een keer met een Nederlands kindje te spelen, die je ook gewoon kunt verstaan en waar je ook gewoon mee kan kletsen. We gaan zeker ook een keer bij hun visite.
Ook hebben wij een tijdje geleden een mailtje gekregen van mensen die rond de kerst met eenzelfde visum als wij hebben, ook naar Sydney komen. Zij hadden onze site gevonden toen ze informatie aan het zoeken waren op internet over het visum. Ze volgen al een tijdje onze verhalen via de website en besloten ons ook maar een keer te mailen. Heel erg leuk natuurlijk. Ook omdat wij hun kunnen helpen aan nog meer informatie en met de verhalen van dingen die we meemaken.
Dus ik ben nu toch wel van mening dat het af en toe best leuk is om eens met Nederlanders in Sydney contact te hebben en verhalen uit te wisselen.

Although I always said that I would never seek contact with Dutch people when we live in Australia, I have to admit that it can be really fun sometimes to talk with people who have been trough the same things as us. And so today Ewald, Nicole and Timo visited us. They are friends with the parents of Emma, she was in Fleur’s class in Holland. Through her parents we came in contact with these people. They moved to Australia in June with a permanent visa. So, today we had a really nice day. Because we have been through the same things here, we had a lot to talk about. It was also nice for the kids to play with a Dutch child, someone you can understand and just have fun with and talk with. We are definitely going to visit them soon.
We also received an e-mail from people who are moving to Sydney around Christmas with the same visa that we have. They found our website when they were looking for information about that visa on the internet. They were following our stories for a while through the website and decided to send us an e-mail. That is really nice of course. Also because we can give them more information and tell the stories of things we encounter.
So I have to admit that I changed my mind and that is really nice to be in contact with other Dutch people in Sydney and to exchange stories.

Fleur "Student of the Week"

Elke vrijdag hebben ze bij Fleur op school “assembly” (een soort afsluiting van de week). De ene week met de hele school en de week daarna met alleen de kleuters en klas 1. Als ouders mag je daar ook gewoon bij komen kijken. Hier worden dan bijvoorbeeld golden award uitgereikt aan kinderen die het die week (of twee weken voor de hogere klassen) heel erg goed hebben gedaan. Als ze bijvoorbeeld veel beter zijn gaan lezen of dat ze met rekenen een stuk beter zijn geworden. Vandaag kreeg Fleur een “Student of the Week” award, omdat zij heel goed haar best had gedaan. In elke klas wordt een student of the week gekozen. Heel trots was ze natuurlijk dat zij deze week de award kreeg. Ook komt je foto dan bij the Office (het administratiekantoor) te hangen. Ook erg leuk natuurlijk. Wij zijn heel trots op haar. Goed gedaan Fleur!!!

Every Friday they have assembly at Fleur’s school. One week with the whole school and the next week with only the ‘kindy’ classes and first grade. The parents are also allowed to come and watch. With the assembly they give for example golden awards to kids who did really well this week (or the last two weeks for the higher classes). For example if they learned to read better or that they improved their mathematics. Today Fleur received a “Student of the Week” award, because she had done really well this week. Every teacher chooses a student of the week. Of course she was really proud that she got the award this week. They also put your picture on the wall at the Office. That is also really nice of course. We are really proud of her. Well done Fleur!!!

Fleur op school en op schoolreis / Fleur at school and on excursion

De laatste dagen op school heeft Fleur het af en toe wat moeilijk. Gisteren huilde Fleur toen ze de klas in moest en ik weg wilde gaan. En ze moet af en toe huilen tijdens de lunch pauze, als de hele school buiten aan het spelen is. Maar in de klas gaat het heel erg goed. Dan is ze vrolijk, doet ze goed mee met alles en lacht ze veel. Dus dat huilen gaat waarschijnlijk vanzelf wel weer over, ze moet gewoon toch een beetje wennen aan de nieuwe school en alle nieuwe regels en dingen op deze school.
Gisteren gingen ze in de klas een spelletje doen met kaartjes. Daar moest iedereen dan om de beurt de woordjes van zeggen. Er was een meisje bij Fleur in de klas een beetje bezorgd dat Fleur de woordjes niet zou kennen. Maar uiteindelijk wist Fleur nog meer woordjes dan sommige andere kinderen. Nou hadden ze ook wel echte Fleur woordjes zoals star, hand en purple. Dus dat had ze heel goed gedaan.
Vandaag ging Fleur met de drie kleuterklassen op schoolreisje (excursion). Ze gingen naar Fairfield City Farm (www.cityfarm.com.au). Ze vertrokken rond 09.00 uur met bus. Vooraf heeft ze nog even gehuild en tijdens het zwaaien in de bus veegde ze nog een traan weg. Daan moest ook heel hard huilen toen de bus wegreed omdat hij het niet leuk vond dat Fleur wegging (hij wilde eerst zelf ook wel mee). De rest van de dag is het heel goed gegaan met Fleur. Ze heeft een erg leuke dag gehad. Ze heeft een kameel eten gegeven (hij at bijna haar hand op zei ze) en een lammetje geaaid, ze heeft een kuikentje en een klein konijntje vastgehouden, en ze heeft geitjes, koeien, varkens, alpaca’s, emoes, wallabies, koala’s, kippen, eenden, ganzen en vogels gezien. Ze hebben een hondenshow gezien waar een hond schapen bij elkaar moest drijven en iemand zien schapenscheren. En ze hebben ook nog een ritje gemaakt met de tractortrein. En vlak voor ze weer met de bus naar school terug moesten, mochten ze ook nog even spelen in de speeltuin. Het was dus een hele leuke en gezellige dag.

For the last days Fleur finds it a little bit hard at school. Yesterday she cried when I wanted to go and she had to go into her classroom. And she sometimes cries during lunch break, when the whole school is playing outside. But in the classroom she is doing really well. She is happy, and plays and laughs a lot. So the crying will probably be over soon, she just has to get used to the new school and all the new rules and things at school
Yesterday they did a little game in the class with cards. You had to say the word of the card when it was your turn. A girl that is in Fleur’s class was a little bit worried that Fleur would not know all the words. But eventually Fleur new even more words than some other kids. That was because they had really Fleur words like star, hand and purple. So she really did very well.
Today Fleur had an excursion with the three ‘kindy’ classes. They went to Fairfield City Farm (www.cityfarm.com.au). They left around 9 am with the bus. Before leaving Fleur had to cry and when the bus drove away she also had to wipe away some tears. Daan also cried really loud when the bus drove away because he did not like Fleur leaving (first he also wanted to go). The rest of the day Fleur did really well. She has had a really fun day. She fed a camel (she said he almost ate her hand) and she petted a little lamb, she held a little chicken and a little rabbit, and she saw goats, cows, pigs, alpaca’s, emu’s, wallabies, koala’s, chickens, ducks, geese and birds. They also watched a dog show where the dog had to bring all the sheep together and where someone was shaving a sheep. And they also had a ride with the tractor train. And before the bus took them back to school, they played in the playground. So it was a really fun and nice day.

Naar de Royal National Park / To the Royal National Park

Vandaag gaan we een dagje richting zee. We gaan naar de Royal National Park (ten zuiden van Sydney). Maar we rijden onderweg eerst nog langs Ikea (jaja, helaas voor Erik moeten we plastic bakken kopen voor het kastje dat eerst bij Fleur op de kamer stond en nu bij Daan, en waar we alleen roze bakken voor hebben en dat kan natuurlijk niet voor een jongen). Gelukkig voor Erik weet ik precies waar ik die bakken kan vinden (elke Ikea is ook precies hetzelfde, zelfs in andere landen) en zijn we redelijk snel weer buiten. Het was zelfs niet druk bij de kassa. Daarna rijden we nog naar Anaconda (een outdoor shop) om een rugdrager te kopen en een goede rugzak. Dan kunnen we binnenkort ook gaan wandelen in de Blue Mountains. Erik en ik kijken voor de rugdrager en een rugzak en Fleur en Daan bekijken alle tenten, kano’s en oefenheuveltjes in de winkel. Als we klaar zijn met onze inkopen doen, rijden we naar het Royal National Park. Het is al halverwege de middag als we er zijn en we moeten $ 11,00 (€ 6,60) betalen als je ook ergens wilt stoppen in het park. En ja, dat willen we, want we gaan naar Garie (Beach). Het is een klein strandje. Heel mooi tussen de rotsen. De golven zijn best hoog, dus goed surfweer vandaag. Alleen zijn er erg veel vliegen. Ze zitten constant in je gezicht (in je ooghoeken en rond je neus enzo), dat is wel vervelend, maar het went ook wel als je er even bent. Fleur en Daan spelen wat in het zand en Fleur gaat op een gegeven moment met Erik in de golven staan. Af en toe worden ze lekker nat want ze hebben gewoon hun kleren aan. Maar dat geeft niks, het droogt goed zolang de zon nog niet achter de rotsen is verdwenen. Als de zon al even weg is, besluiten we weer richting huis te gaan. Eerst nog even alle voeten schoonspoelen en onderweg nog een keer bij een uitkijkpunt stoppen om van het mooie uitzicht te genieten. Wat is het hier toch allemaal mooi. Dan rijden we terug naar huis, en onderweg eten we nog in Beverly Hills. Het was weer een hele leuke dag.

Today we are going to beach. We are going to the Royal National Park (south of Sydney). But first we drive to Ikea (yes really, unfortunately for Erik we have to buy plastic boxes for a storage unit that was in Fleur’s room and now it is in Daan’s room, and we only have pink boxes and that is not done for a boy). Luckily for Erik I know exactly where I can find those boxes (every Ikea is the same, even in other countries) and pretty soon we are outside with the boxes. It actually was not that busy at the cash register. After that we drive to Anaconda (an outdoor shop) to buy a child carrier and a good backpack. So we can soon make nice walks in the Blue Mountains. Erik and I go look for the child carrier and the backpack and Fleur and Daan have a look at all the tents, canoes, and practicing hills in the store. When we have finished shopping for the day, we drive to the Royal National Park. It is already around 4 pm when we arrive and we have to pay $ 11.00 (€ 6.60) if we want to stop somewhere in the park. And yes, we want to stop because we are going to Garie (Beach). That is a small beach and very beautiful in between cliffs. The waves are pretty high, so good surfing weather today. But there are also a lot of flies. They sit on your face (in the corner of your eyes and around your nose), that is annoying, but you also get used to that, after you are there for a while. Fleur and Daan play in the sand and after a while Fleur is standing in the waves with Erik. Once in a while they get wet, because they are still wearing their clothes. But that does not matter, because dries up very quick, as long as the sun does not disappear behind the cliffs. When the sun has gone behind the cliffs, we decide to go back home. First we clean our feet and on the way back we stop at a lookout point to enjoy the great view. It is really beautiful here. Then we drive home, and have dinner in Beverly Hills. Again it was a really nice day.

Kakkerlakken / Cockroaches

Omdat we hier veel last hebben van kakkerlakken (ja echt waar, van die hele grote en ook wat kleinere) kwamen ze donderdag van Pest Control om te spuiten. We moesten daarna een paar uur het huis uit omdat het erg stinkt. Ze spuiten buiten langs het hele huis en binnen langs de plinten. Als het goed is, zijn over twee weken alle kakkerlakken dood. Als we overdag een kakkerlak vinden, zetten we er een glas overheen en haalt Erik ze ’s avonds weg. Hij neemt ze dan mee naar buiten en snijdt ze doormidden (gatver). Fleur heeft al een keer mee staan kijken want ze vond het wel erg interessant. Maar nu ze gespoten hadden, dachten we dat ze wel weg zouden zijn/blijven. Maar helaas, dat was dus niet zo. Vanmorgen lagen er wel een stuk of acht kakkerlakken verspreid door het huis. Sommige waren dood, maar sommige leefden nog. Dat was dus gelijk uit bed op kakkerlakkenjacht. Iedereen was wel gelijk goed wakker. We laten wel weten of we straks echt van de kakkerlakken af zijn.

Because there are a lot of cockroaches here (yes really, we have really big ones and smaller ones) Pest Control came on Thursday to spray. After they were finishes we had to leave the house for a couple of hours, because of the bad smell. They spray at the outside of the house and inside at the skirting. If it works well, most of the cockroaches will be dead in about two weeks. If we find a cockroach when Erik is at work, we put a glass over it and Erik will take it away when he comes home. He will take the cockroach outside and cut it in two (yuck). Fleur already had a look at that because she thought it was very interesting. But now that they have sprayed the house, we thought that they would be gone or at least stayed away from our house. But unfortunately that was not the case. This morning there were about eight cockroaches in the house. Some of them were dead, but some of them were still alive. So, straight out of bed we go cockroach hunting. And everybody was very awake from that moment on. We will let you know if the cockroaches are really gone.

Fleurs uniform / Fleurs uniform

Fleur moet op school ook een uniform aan. Ze draagt een blauw broekje met een overslag (dan lijkt het aan de voorkant een rokje) en een witte polo met een blauwe kraag en het schoollogo erop. En ze moet witte sokken en zwarte schoenen aan. Als het wat kouder is, heeft ze er ook nog een soort fleece blauw baseball vest met schoollogo bij. En voor donderdag heeft ze een blauwe sportbroek en een blauw sport t-shirt want dan sporten ze wat meer op school. In de zomermaanden moeten ze ook een pet of hoedje op tegen de zon. Ze hebben op dit moment nog geen kleine hoedjes of petjes dus mag Fleur een eigen pet of hoedje op. Op de foto’s kunnen jullie zien hoe Fleur eruit ziet als ze naar school gaat.

At school Fleur has to wear a uniform. She wears a blue skort (short that looks like a skirt at the front side), and a white polo shirt with a blue collar and the school crest. And she has to wear white socks and black shoes. If it gets a little colder, she also has a fleecy baseball jacket, also with the school crest. And on Thursday she has to wear a blue sports short with a blue sports t-shirt, because they have a little more sports that day. During the summer months they also have to wear a hat or a cap to protect them from the sun. At the moment they do not have small hats or caps, so Fleur can wear her own cap or hat. On the pictures you can see what Fleur looks like when she is going to school.

Fleur gaat naar school!!! / Fleur is going to school!!!

Dinsdag zijn we voor een introductiegesprek op de school dichtst bij ons in de buurt geweest om te kijken hoe de school werkt. Wij waren heel tevreden over de dingen die er verteld zijn over deze school en dus besloten we Fleur aan te melden. In overleg met de directrice hebben we besloten dat Fleur maar gelijk de volgende dag naar school gaat zodat ze nog ongeveer 10 weken heeft voor de zomervakantie. En dus gaat Fleur sinds woensdag naar school en ze vindt het helemaal fantastisch. Ze begint in een kleuterklas (kindy). En als alles goed gaat kan ze dan na de zomervakantie (eind januari) beginnen in first grade (1e klas / groep 3). De kleuterschool hier is wel iets anders dan de kleuterschool in Nederland want hier moeten ze al op de kleuterschool leren lezen en schrijven. Dus Fleur moet niet alleen Engels leren praten, maar het ook gelijk leren lezen en schrijven. Gelukkig hebben ze op school een ESL juf (English as a Second Language / voor als je thuis geen Engels spreekt). Die helpt haar drie dagen in de week met haar Engels. Zodat ze hopelijk voor de zomervakantie goed genoeg is om met de rest van de kinderen uit haar klas en van haar leeftijd mee te gaan naar de first grade. We zullen wel zien hoe het gaat. De afgelopen drie dagen is het in ieder geval heel goed gegaan. Fleur gaat met heel veel plezier naar school en heeft al veel vriendinnetjes gemaakt (zegt ze zelf). Ze weet alleen niet hoe ze heten want het zijn er te veel om allemaal te onthouden. Ook als je vraagt wat ze allemaal gedaan heeft en wat de juf allemaal gezegd heeft, zegt Fleur gewoon: “dat weet ik toch niet, ik kan toch geen Engels”. Erg grappig hoor. Maar ze schijnt er zelf geen problemen mee te hebben, dus dat komt vanzelf wel. Daan vindt het allemaal nog niet zo erg leuk. De eerste dag dat we Fleur op school achterlieten, moest hij heel erg huilen. Hij wilde dat Fleur weer met ons mee zou gaan. De dag daarna mopperde hij nog wel een beetje dat ze gelijk mee naar huis moest komen. Maar nu gaat dat ook beter en is Daan er ook een beetje aan gewend dat Fleur naar school gaat. Volgende week beginnen we dus met de eerste hele week dat ze naar school moet. Ze gaan hier trouwens van 09.00 uur tot 15.00 uur naar school, vijf dagen in de week. Geen woensdagmiddag vrij meer dus.

Tuesday we had an introduction on the primary school close to our home, to see how everything works there. We were very happy about the things they told us about the school and so we decided to enroll Fleur at that school. And, together with the school principal, we decided to let her start the next day, so she has about 10 weeks to go before the summer holiday. And so Fleur is going to school and she loves it. She starts at kindergarten (kindy). And if everything goes well she will start in first grade after summer holiday (end of January). Kindergarten here is a little different than in Holland because they have to learn how to read and write. So, Fleur does not only have to learn how to speak English, but also has to learn how to read and write in English. Luckily they have an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language / for kids who do not speak English at home). She will help Fleur with learning English three days a week. Hopefully her English will be good enough before the summer holiday so she can go to first grade with all the other kids in her class and of her age next year. We will see how it goes. The last three days she did very well. Fleur loves going to school and already made a lot of friends (she says). She only does not know the names of those girls because there are a lot of names to remember. And when you ask Fleur what she did that day and what the teacher has said, Fleur just says: “I don’t know, I don’t speak English”. That is really funny. But Fleur does not seem to mind, so that will be okay. Daan does not like all this. The first day we left Fleur at school, he started to cry very loud. He wanted Fleur to come with us. The next day he growled a little; he wanted her to come home with us. But now he is also doing better, and Daan is getting used to the fact that Fleur is going to school every day. Next week will be the first complete school week for Fleur. School here starts at 9 am and ends at 3 pm, five days a week. So no more Wednesday afternoons off.

Nog geen internet thuis / No internet at home

We leven nog steeds, alles gaat goed, alleen hebben we nog geen internet thuis, dus kunnen we niet msn-en of skypen met iedereen, en dat missen we wel heel erg.

Ik ben al sinds meer dan twee weken aan het proberen om thuis ADSL te krijgen, maar vandaag van de lokale KPN gehoord dat het toch niet kan. Twee weken geleden gebeld met telefoonbedrijf Optus: "ja hoor, wij kunnen u ADSL leveren". Anderhalve week later ligt er een lullug briefje in de bus: "Nee, sorry, kan toch niet". Ik gebeld: "Het netwerk bij ons in buurt is van glasvezel en eigendom van Telstra, en Optus kan niet koppelen aan die glasvezel". Daarna meteen met Telstra gebeld. "Ja hoor wij kunnen ADSL leveren". Meteen bij hun de vaste telefoon genomen, dat werkte wel dezelfde dag. Vandaag op het antwoordapparaat: "Nee, sorry, gaat toch niet. You are connected to the rim instead of the bladiebladiebla". Dus is het koper dat bij ons het huis in komt überhaupt niet geschikt voor ADSL...*$!%#$&%#.
Maar goed we zijn niet voor 1 gat te vangen. Je hebt hier ook zogenaamd 'Wireless broadband' dat via 3G netwerk gaat (net als mobieltjes), en niet eens duurder dan via de telefoon.
Wij hebben onze mobieltjes van Virgin (idd van Sir Richard Branson) en zij leveren in Australia sind kort ook breedband via het mobiele netwerk. Dus ik die mannen gebeld en die deden eerst een 'Credit Check'. Helaas, niet goed; blijkbaar hebben we nog geen credit history. Nee, natuurlijk niet, we wonen hier net. Dus moet hij additionele informatie hebben om te bewijzen dat je bent wie je zegt dat je bent, waar je woont en of je de 36 euro in de maand (want daar praten we over) wel kunt betalen. En dus moet ik een kopie van de volgende zaken faxen:
- het paspoort,
- de credit card,
- een arbeidscontract,
- bankafschrift
- contract met energie maatschappij.
Het gaat wel erg ver, maar goed, we willen vooruit.....Gekke Jongens die Ozzies.

We are still alive, everything goes well, we only do not yet have internet at home, so we cannot chat with everybody through msn or skype, and we miss that a lot.

Over the last two weeks I am trying to get ADSL, but today I heard from the local phone company that we cannot have that here. Two weeks ago I called with the phone company Optus: "Yes sure, we can deliver ADSL". One and a half week later we find a tiny letter in our mail box: "No, sorry, it is not possible". So I called them: "The network in our neighborhood is from fiberglass and owned by Telstra, and Optus cannot connect to that fiberglass". After that I called Telstra. "Yes of course we can deliver ADSL". Also asked for a home phone connection as well, and that worked the same day. Today on the answering machine: "No, sorry, it is not going to work. You are connected to the rim instead of the bladiebladiebla". So the wire that runs into our house is never going to be suitable for ADSL...*$!%#$&%#. But ok, we do not give up that fast. Here they have so called 'Wireless broadband' that goes through 3G network (like mobile phones), and it is no more expensive than through landlines.
We have our mobile phones from Virgin (yes indeed, from Sir Richard Branson) and they deliver broadband through the mobile network in Australia. So I called the guys and they first did a 'Credit Check'. Too bad, not good, apparently we do not have a credit history here yet. No, of course not, we just moved here. So he needs additional information to prove that you are who you say you are, where you live and if you can pay the 36 euro a month (because that is the amount we are talking about). And so I have to fax a copy of the following items:
- the passport
- the credit card
- a contract from my employer
- bank statement
- contract with the energy company
That is taking it a bit far, but well, we want to go ahead…..Funny guys, those Ozzies.

Vandaag was Fleur een lego vliegtuigje in elkaar aan het zetten. De eerste keer met een klein beetje hulp van papa en daarna helemaal zelf. Op een gegeven moment gaat het niet helemaal goed omdat ze niet goed naar de plaatjes kijkt. Als ze het zelf in de gaten heeft, zegt ze: “ik zit gewoon mijn ogen in mijn broekzak, eeeeh onder mijn jurk te doen” (want ze had geen broek aan maar een jurk). Wij hebben helemaal in een deuk gelegen.

Naar de Blue Mountains / Going to the Blue Mountains

Vandaag gaan we een dagje naar de Blue Mountains. Het is ongeveer een uurtje rijden, dus dat is goed te doen. We besluiten naar Katoomba te gaan omdat je daar ook de Three Sisters kunt zien. Dat is de bekendste rotsformatie in de Blue Mountains. Als we in Katoomba aankomen is het erg druk met allemaal toeristen. Het grappige is ook dat ik altijd dacht dat je de bush in moest om de Three Sisters te zien, maar je hebt gewoon een groot uitkijkpunt (Echo Point) vanwaar je ze kunt zien. We lopen ook nog even een stukje naar beneden naar een lager plateau waar het iets minder druk is. Van hier heb je echt wel een heel mooi uitzicht over de Blue Mountains en de Three Sisters. Echt fantastisch. Daarna gaan we even snel een sandwich kopen en dus even wat eten. Als we gegeten en gedronken hebben gaan we nog een kleine wandeling maken over een pad dat een stukje naar beneden loopt. Helaas is het pad op een gegeven moment niet meer verhard en we hebben de buggy bij ons voor Daan. Daar kunnen we nu dus niet meer mee rijden. Dan gaat Daan maar bij Erik op de nek en ik neem de buggy onder mijn arm mee. We kunnen zo nog wel een stukje verder lopen totdat we bij een hele lange steile trap naar beneden komen. Dat gaat dus niet lukken met Daan bij Erik op de nek en ik met de buggy onder mijn arm. Fleur is erg teleurgesteld. Het wordt dus tijd dat we een goede rugdrager gaan kopen zodat we weer lekkere wandelingen kunnen gaan maken. We lopen nu dus weer terug naar Echo Point. Kijken nog even of er nog goede informatie te krijgen is bij de Tourist Info hier. Daarna lopen we weer naar de auto en rijden nog een stukje langs de rand van Katoomba. Hier heb je af en toe hele mooie vergezichten over de Blue Mountains en ook op de Three Sisters, maar dan zonder al die toeristen om je heen. Heel erg mooi dus. Het is dan al weer wat later in de middag en het wordt tijd om naar huis te rijden. Het is hier namelijk rond 18.30 uur al donker. Het was in ieder geval een leuke eerste ervaring van de Blue Mountains en we gaan hier zeker snel weer naartoe.

Today we are going to the Blue Mountains. It is about an hour’s drive, so that is not too long. We decided to go to Katoomba because there you can see the Three Sisters. That is the most famous rock formation in the Blue Mountains. When we arrive in Katoomba it is very busy there with all the tourists. The funny thing is that I always thought that you had to go into the bush to see the Three Sisters, but there is a big lookout (Echo Point), from where you have a good view. We walk down a little to a lower plateau where is it a little less crowded. From here we have a really beautiful view over the Blue Mountains and the Three Sisters. Really fantastic. After that we have a quick lunch. When we have finished our lunch, we take a walk on a path that is going down. Unfortunately after a while it is not paved anymore but we have the stroller with us for Daan. We cannot ride with the stroller anymore, so Erik takes Daan on his shoulders and I take the stroller under my arm. We can walk for a little like this until we arrive to a long and steep stairway down. That will not work with Daan on Erik’s shoulders and with the stroller under my arm. Fleur is very disappointed. We have to buy a good child carrier soon, so that we can go for some longer walks. Now, we just walk back to Echo Point and see if we can find some good information at the Tourist Info here. After that we walked back to the car and drive for a while in the Katoomba area. Here you also have very nice views over the Blue Mountains and also of the Three Sisters, but then without all the (Asian) tourists around you. It is very beautiful. It is getting late and we have to go back home. Because around 6.30 pm is already dark. But we really had a good first experience of the Blue Mountains and we definitely going back soon.

Een dagje naar het centrum / A day to the centre

Vandaag even een dagje weg uit alle rommel thuis. Erik moet gewoon werken en ik ga met Fleur en Daan naar het centrum van Sydney. We rijden met Erik mee naar Gordon (waar hij werkt) en nemen daar de trein naar het centrum. Dat gaat allemaal heel goed. We lopen eerst naar Circular Quay waar we op een bankje even wat drinken en een koekje eten. Je kunt hier alle rondvaartboten zien wegvaren en terugkomen. Dat vinden Fleur en Daan natuurlijk helemaal geweldig. Daarna lopen we een stukje langs Campbells Cove. Zo kun je mooi de haven, de Opera House en de Harbour Bridge zien. Erg mooi dus. Dan lopen we verder naar het Tourist Information Centre. Hier nemen we veel informatie mee over dingen die je kunt doen in Sydney en omgeving. Gelukkig hebben we laatst een buggy gekocht waar Daan nu in zit. Daar kunnen nu mooi ook alle folders in zodat we niet zo hoeven te slepen. Vanaf het Tourist Information Centre lopen we onder de Harbour Bridge door naar het Observatory Park. Bovenop een heuvel heb je dan mooi uitzicht over de baaien bij Sydney. Hier eten we lekker een boterham en genieten we even heerlijk in de zon. Daarna lopen we weer terug naar Circular Quay en gaan nog even vlak bij de Opera House op een bankje in het zonnetje zitten en wat drinken. Dan is het al weer tijd om terug te lopen naar de trein. Het was een gezellig dagje en Fleur heeft heel goed meegelopen, zonder te mopperen. Dat was heel goed van haar.

Today we leave the house to get away from the mess for a day. Erik has to work and I will take Fleur and Daan for a trip to the centre of Sydney. We go with Erik to Gordon (where the office is) and we then take the train to the centre. That is all going very well. First we walk to Circular Quay where we sit on a bench and have a drink and eat a cookie. From here you can see all the harbour cruise boats come and go. Fleur and Daan love that of course. After that we walk past Campbells Cove. From here you have a nice view of the harbour, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Then we walk to the Tourist Information Centre. Here we take a lot of information with us about things you can do in Sydney and its surroundings. Luckily we bought a stroller for Daan and we can put all the brochures in there as well, so I do not have to carry everything. From the Tourist Information Centre we walk under the Harbour Bridge and then to the Observatory Park. On top of the hill you have a great view of the bays of Sydney. Here we have lunch and enjoy the sun. After that we walk back to Circular Quay and have a drink in the sun, next to the Opera House. And then it is already time to walk back to the train station. It was a really nice day and Fleur walked all day without complaining. So that was really good of her.

Naar de dokter / Going to the doctor

Met Daan gaat het gelukkig weer wat beter, alleen klaagde hij vanmorgen over pijn aan zijn oor. We willen het eigenlijk nog een dagje aankijken, maar hij gaat steeds harder huilen. Dus besluiten we maar even snel een huisarts op te zoeken in de Gouden Gids. Gelukkig zit er hier vlakbij, bij het winkelcentrum, een praktijk. We bellen en kunnen om 10.15 uur terecht. We moeten daar eerst nog allemaal formulieren invullen en we moeten contant betalen ($ 35,00 = € 21,00, niet duur dus). De doktor is aardig alleen vraagt hij op een gegeven moment of Daan een meisje is. Gelijk vinden we hem een stuk minder leuk. Maar goed, Daan blijkt dus een dubbele oorontsteking te hebben en we krijgen een recept mee voor antibiotica. Die gaan we gelijk halen want de apotheek/drogist zit ook in het winkelcentrum. Gelukkig vindt Daan het drankje wel lekker want het is roze en er zit een aardbei smaakje aan. En hij hoeft het drankje maar twee keer per dag te hebben dus we kunnen wel gewoon nog weg overdag als we willen (het moet namelijk in de koelkast bewaard worden). Hopelijk is de oorontsteking snel over.

Fortunately Daan is doing a lot better, only this morning he complained about his ear that was hurting. We wanted to wait for a day to see how things go, but he started to cry louder and louder. So we decide to find a doctor in the Yellow Pages. Luckily there is a family practice close by, at the shopping centre. When we call they tell us that we can come by at 10.15 am. First we have to fill in some forms and we have to pay cash ($ 35.00, that is not expensive). The doctor is nice but when he asks if Daan is a girl, we like him less. Anyway, Daan is having a double ear infection and we get a prescription for an antibiotic. We are going to get that straight away because the pharmacy is also in the shopping centre. Luckily Daan likes the stuff because it is pink and it has a strawberry flavor. And he only has to take it twice a day so we can go away for the day if we want to (the antibiotics have to be kept refrigerated). Hopefully the ear infection is over soon.
