De Australische Ekster / The Australian Magpie

Het is erg fijn dat het lente is, maar de lente heeft ook een nadeel. De Australische ekster legt rond deze tijd eieren en beschermt de eieren en straks de kleintjes vol overgave. Dat betekent dat ze mensen “swoopen”. Ze proberen je weg te jagen uit de buurt van het nest. Als je uit de buurt van de bomen met de nesten blijft, is er niks aan de hand. Maar die bomen staan op het schoolplein bij Fleur en je moet er langs lopen om bij de school te komen. Vanmiddag werd Fleur geswoopt en toen we een andere uitgang namen kwam er alweer een ekster aanvliegen om ons weg te jagen. Meestal doen ze niks, maar ze kunnen je wel op je hoofd raken en ze vallen meestal aan van achteren zodat je het niet ziet aankomen. Dan kun je dus behoorlijk schrikken. Gelukkig hebben we nog maar twee weken school te gaan en als het goed is, is het na de vakantie voorbij en zijn de eksters groot genoeg om niet meer zo beschermd te worden. Nog maar even volhouden dus en misschien maar met een paraplu over het schoolplein lopen.

We love that it is spring now, but spring also has something not so nice. The magpie lays eggs around this time and protects the eggs and later the little magpies. That means that they swoop people. They try to chase them away from the nest. When you stay away from the trees with the nests you are fine. But those trees are at the school ground at Fleur’s school and you have to walk past them to get to the school. Fleur and Daan already got swooped and when we were taking another exit this afternoon, another magpie came flying towards us to chase us away. Most of the time they do not hurt you, but they can hit you on the head and mostly you are being attacked from the back so you do not see them coming. That can really scare you. Luckily we only have two more weeks of school before the holidays, and probably after the holidays the little magpies will be big enough so they do not need the protection anymore. So we are hanging on for a couple more weeks and maybe we will take an umbrella to school for protection.
