Fleur en Daan waren ziek dit weekend / Fleur and Daan were sick this weekend

Helaas zijn de kinderen hier ook weleens ziek. En uitgerekend in het mooiste weekend van de afgelopen weken (het was zeker 20 graden of warmer) waren ze allebei ziek. Eerst Daan van vrijdagmiddag tot zaterdagmorgen en daarna Fleur van zondagmorgen heel vroeg tot zondagavond. Het was dus een rustig weekend met veel bedden verschonen en kleren wassen. Gelukkig zijn ze nu allebei weer helemaal beter en is Fleur zelfs vanavond nog naar zwemles geweest. Dat was maar goed ook, want er werd vandaag gekeken welke kinderen er de volgende termijn door kunnen naar een andere groep. Fleur moest ook een stukje zwemmen om haar te beoordelen en ze mag na de vakantie (in oktober) door naar de volgende groep (een hoger niveau). Dat heeft ze dus heel goed gedaan.

Unfortunately sometimes the children are sick here too. And they have a bad timing with that because in the best weekend of the last weeks (it was definitely 20 degrees or more) they are both sick. First Daan from Friday afternoon until Saturday morning and then Fleur from Sunday morning very early until Sunday night. So, we had a very quiet weekend with a lot of cleaning beds and washing of dirty cloths. Luckily they are both better now and Fleur even went to swimming lessons tonight. And that was good because they were checking today which children can go to the next group in the next term. Fleur also had to swim so they could see how well she is doing, and she is doing very well because after the holidays (in October) she is going to the next level. So she did really well.

Walter is een paar dagen hier / Walter is here for a couple of days

Vandaag wordt een drukke maar erg leuke dag. Want Walter (Erik’s beste vriend uit Nederland) landt vanavond in Sydney en blijft hier tot dinsdag. Maar eerst moet Fleur vandaag nog gewoon naar school en heeft ze om 16.00 uur nog een feestje. Het is het feestje van Ariana bij haar uit de klas. Het feestje is in een binnenspeeltuin en Daan en ik gaan ook mee. Dan kan Daan ook spelen. De kinderen hebben het erg naar hun zin. Ze eten taart en friet en spelen heerlijk. Daarna rijden we weer snel naar huis want we willen met z’n allen Walter op gaan halen op het vliegveld. Het was de bedoeling dat hij om 20.20 uur zou landen, maar die vlucht is een week geleden al gecancelled en nu is het de bedoeling dat hij om 21.20 uur landt. Fleur en Daan kunnen ook goed in de auto slapen, dus het is geen probleem dat hij pas om 21.20 uur landt. We eten nog even snel met z’n allen en Erik kijkt even op internet hoe het staat met de vlucht. Daar zien we dat de vlucht een uur vertraging heeft. Dan gaat het wel heel erg laat worden voor Fleur en Daan en we besluiten dat Erik dan maar alleen Walter op gaat halen. Uiteindelijk landt het vliegtuig om 22.00 uur en zijn ze rond 23.00 uur hier. Erg leuk en ook een beetje vreemd om Walter nu hier op bezoek te hebben.
Today will be a busy but fun day. Because today Walter (Erik’s best friend from Holland) will arrive at Sydney Airport tonight and he will stay until Tuesday. But Fleur still has to go to school today and at 4 pm she has a birthday party. It is Ariana’s party, a girl from her class. The party is at an indoor playground and Daan and I will go there too. The kids are having a great time. They have cake and chips and have fun playing. After that we quickly drive home because we all want to go to the airport to pick up Walter. He was supposed to land at 8.20 pm, but that flight was cancelled a week ago and now he will land at 9.20 pm. Fleur and Daan can sleep in the car very easily, so it will not be a problem that he will land an hour later. We have a quick bite to eat at home and Erik has a look on the internet to see what they say about his flight. There we see that the flight has an hour delay. That will be too late to take Fleur and Daan to the airport so we decide that Erik will go pick Walter up by himself. Eventually the plane lands at 10 pm and around 11 pm they are home. It is very nice and also a little bit strange to have Walter here now.

We hebben besloten om vandaag naar de Blue Mountains te gaan. We rijden naar Echo Point en kijken natuurlijk eerst weer even naar de Three Sisters. Dan lopen we naar de Giant Stairways (910 treden en 32 stalen trappen die bijna verticaal naar beneden gaan!) en lopen die naar beneden. Je komt dan eerst langs de onderkant van de eerste Sister en dat ziet er wel heel anders uit. Dan verder door het bos naar beneden. Helemaal onder aan de trap eten we even wat en rusten een heel klein beetje uit. Dan lopen we weer verder. We gaan via Dardanelles Pass en Federal Pass naar de Scenic Railway. Onderweg komen we nog langs Katoomba Falls en hebben we nog een keer mooi zicht op de Three Sisters. We nemen de Scenic Railway omhoog naar Scenic World. Dit is echt geweldig, dit treintje legt een hoogteverschil af van 415 meter onder een hoek van 45 graden, het is de steilste treinrit ter wereld. Je zit gewoon los op de bankjes en eigenlijk lijkt het alsof je net zo goed kunt gaan staan. Het ritje gaat op een gegeven moment tussen de rotsen door en dan door een tunnel waar het heel erg donker is en Fleur en Daan schrikken daar van. Maar we vinden het allemaal geweldig. Eenmaal boven gaan we even lekker een kopje koffie drinken voor we weer naar Echo Point lopen. Daan wil het stuk over de Prince Henri Cliff Walk naar Echo Point eigenlijk wel zelf lopen. En aan mijn hand gaat het heel erg goed. Hij loopt ongeveer 1½-2 kilometer zelf, en dat is toch best knap want het is niet zomaar een recht pad. We zingen liedjes onderweg en dat maakt het wel erg leuk. Na deze heerlijke dag wandelen gaan we nog wat eten in Penrith bij Lone Star Steak House. Fijn hoor zo’n dag in de Blue Mountains.
We have decided to go to the Blue Mountains today. We drive to Echo Point and have a look at the Three Sisters first. Then we walk to the Giant Stairways (910 steps and 32 steel staircases of almost vertical descent!) and walk it downwards. You first walk past the first Sister and that looks very different. Then you walk further through the bush. At the bottom of the stairways we eat something and have a short rest. Then we walk on. We go via Dardanelles Pass and Federal Pass to the Scenic Railway. On the way we walk past Katoomba Falls and have a great view of the Three Sisters. We take the Scenic Railway up to Scenic World. This is really great, this train ascends 415 meter with a 45 degree angle; it is the steepest railway in the world. You have nothing that holds you to your seat and it feels like you can better just stand in it. The ride goes through cliffs and then through a tunnel which is very dark and Fleur and Daan are a little bit scared for a moment. But we all enjoy the ride very much. When we are at Scenic World we have a nice cup of coffee before we walk back to Echo Point. Daan wants to walk the Prince Henri Cliff Walk to Echo Point himself. And with holding my hand he is doing very well. He walks about 1½-2 kilometer himself, and we think that is very good of him because it is not a nice and paved path. We sing some songs on the way and that makes it a lot of fun. After this great day of walking we have dinner in Penrith at the Lone Star Steak House. It is really nice to have such a great day in the Blue Mountains.

Vandaag gaan we natuurlijk ook naar Sydney, want daar moet je ook geweest zijn als je hier bent. We gaan met de auto en parkeren die in een garage bij Darling Harbour (We wilden een stuk met het veer maar die hebben maar beperkte dienst op zondag). Na een bakje koffie in de zon lopen we naar de Sydney Tower. We hopen dat het nu niet zo druk is als 5 weken geleden, en gelukkig is dat zo en zijn we al snel boven. We hebben een geweldig mooi uitzicht want het weer is erg goed. Je kunt zelfs de vliegtuigen zien landen en opstijgen op het vliegveld. Fleur en Daan eten hier ook alvast hun boterham en wij kopen iets te eten als we weer buiten zijn. We lopen dan naar Hyde Park en eten daar even onze lunch op het gras in het zonnetje, het is heerlijk. Daarna lopen we door de Botanic Gardens. Hier zien we een heleboel fruit bats (vleermuizen) hangen in de bomen, echt heel erg veel. Dat is een heel mooi gezicht hoor. En later zien we ook nog cockatoos in de bomen. We maken een paar mooie foto’s van de Opera House met de Harbour Bridge op de achtergrond. En dan lopen we door naar de Opera House. Het is een heerlijke wandeling zo. Daarna lopen we naar Circular Quay waar we de ferry nemen terug naar Darling Harbour. Hier eten we gezellig nog wat in een restaurant en dan gaan we weer naar huis.
Today we of course are going to Sydney, because you have to have seen that when you are here. We take the car and park it at a parking at Darling Harbour (We wanted to take a ferry but their service is limited on Sunday). After a nice cup of coffee in the sun we walk to the Sydney Tower. We hope that it will not be as busy as about 5 weeks ago and fortunately it isn’t and soon we are up in the tower. We have a wonderful view because the weather is really good. You can even see the planes land and take off at the airport. Fleur and Daan eat their sandwich here and we buy lunch when we are outside again. We walk to Hyde Park and have lunch on the grass in the sun, it is very nice. After that we walk through the Botanic Gardens. Here we see a lot of fruit bats hanging in the trees, really a lot. That looks great. And we also see cockatoos in the trees. We take some nice pictures of the Opera House with the Harbour Bridge behind it. And then we walk to the Opera House. It is a nice walk. After that we walk to Circular Quay where we take the ferry back to Darling Harbour. We have dinner here at a nice restaurant and then we head back home.

Vandaag moet Fleur weer gewoon naar school. We brengen haar met z’n allen naar school toe. Helaas hebben ze op school problemen met de geluidsband van het volkslied, dus kan Walter niet horen hoe dat hier elke maandag gezongen wordt, dat is wel jammer. Daarna rijden Erik en Walter naar Dee Why Beach om van daaruit naar North Head te lopen en weer terug; ongeveer 20 km. Het is een erg mooie wandeling en ze genieten van de mooie uitzichten. Ze kunnen natuurlijk ook lekker bijpraten zo samen en lekker doorwandelen. Zonder kinderen gaat het toch wat sneller. Bij Manly beach zien ze nog een paar walvissen in de verte en het uitzicht vanaf North Head is erg spectaculair. Fleur moet vandaag ook weer naar zwemles en Erik en Walter zijn net op tijd bij het zwembad om te zien hoe goed Fleur het eigenlijk al doet. Daarna snel naar huis zodat de mannen even iets kunnen eten. Dan is het alweer bedtijd voor Fleur en Daan en hebben wij onze laatste gezellig avond met Walter hier. Morgen vertrekt hij alweer.
Today Fleur has to go to school. All of us are bringing her to school. Unfortunately the school has trouble with the music tape of the National Anthem, so Walter will not see and hear how they sing that every Monday morning; that is too bad. After that Erik and Walter drive to Dee Why Beach and from there they walk to North Head and back, about 20 k’s. It is a beautiful walk and they enjoy the wonderful views. It also gives them a chance to catch up and walk a bit faster. Without the kids it is a lot easier. From Manly beach they see a couple of whales and the view from North Head is spectacular. Fleur also has to go to swimming lessons today and Erik and Walter just make it in time to see how well she is doing with swimming. After that we quickly go home so the guys can have dinner. And then it is already time for Fleur and Daan to go to bed and we have a lovely last evening together with Walter. Tomorrow he will already be leaving.

De dag van vertrek is toch nog een drukke dag. Ik breng snel Fleur naar school en rond half 10 lopen we met z’n allen weer naar school omdat ze vandaag een Book Parade hebben. Alle klassen hebben een boek gelezen en daar dan dingen over geknutseld. De klas van Fleur heeft een alfabet boek gelezen en zij hebben allemaal een hoed gemaakt met een tekening erop van een dier en de letter daarvan houden ze vast. Ze hebben geprobeerd een heleboel kinderen de letter van de eigen naam te geven en dus heeft Fleur de letter F van Frog (kikker). Als het afgelopen is, gaan wij met Walter nog even naar het winkeltje bij Featherdale (het wildlife park) om souvenirs voor Maaike, Tim, Lieke en Luuk (zijn vrouw en kids) te kopen. Daarna halen we Fleur alweer op van school en is het tijd om Walter naar het vliegveld te brengen. We drinken nog wat daar en al snel is het tijd voor Walter om te gaan. We nemen afscheid en gaan daarna zelf nog even naar de vliegtuigen kijken. Walter, we vonden het geweldig om je een paar dagen hier te hebben. We hebben genoten en hopen natuurlijk dat je nog vaker op zakenreis naar Australië moet.
The day that Walter is leaving is still a busy day. I quickly bring Fleur to school and around 9.30 am we walk to school all together because they have a Book Parade today. All the classes have read a book and they made all sorts of art work about the book. Fleur’s class has read an alphabet book and they made hats with a drawing of an animal and they hold the first letter of the animal’s name. They have tried to give a lot of kids the letter of their first name, so Fleur had the letter F from Frog. When it is finished, we take Walter to the souvenir shop at Featherdale (the wildlife park) to buy souvenirs for Maaike, Tim, Lieke and Luuk (his wife and kids). After that we pick up Fleur from school and it is time to bring Walter to the airport. We have a drink there and soon it is time for Walter to go. We say goodbye and have a look at the planes from the observation deck after that. Walter, we loved having you here for a couple of days. We really enjoyed it and hope to see you here more often on a business trip to Australia.

Athletics Carnaval bij Fleur op school / Athletics Carnaval at Fleur's school

Vanmorgen hebben de kleuters samen met year 1 en 2 (groep 3 en 4 in Nederland) bij Fleur op school Athletics Carnaval, een soort sportdag. Als ouders, broertjes en zusjes mag je ook komen en dat vinden Daan en ik natuurlijk heel erg leuk (en Fleur ook). De kinderen worden ingedeeld in groepen op leeftijd. Fleur komt in de groep 6-jarigen met alle kinderen die dit jaar 6 zijn geworden of dat dit jaar nog worden. Dan gaan ze allemaal verschillende spellen doen. Ze moeten een stukje lopen met een zakje met balletjes op hun hoofd, zaklopen, balspellen, een leuk spel met een parachute en ze moeten hardlopen. Er is een speciale baan gemaakt op het gras en het is een echte wedstrijd. Van de meiden in de groep van Fleur worden drie groepjes gemaakt die om de beurt moeten rennen. De beste twee uit alle drie de groepjes gaan later door naar de finale. Fleur wordt in haar groepje tweede en mag dus door naar de finale. Ze vindt het in het begin nog wel cool. Maar nadat ze wat gegeten en gedronken hebben, heeft ze eigenlijk helemaal geen zin meer om te rennen. Ik beloof haar dat ik mee zal rennen en van Kaila hoort ze dat ze waarschijnlijk een lintje zullen krijgen als je eerste, tweede of derde wordt in de finale. Dat is natuurlijk wel heel erg leuk en Fleur wil toch wel weer meedoen. Voor iemand die dus eigenlijk helemaal niet van rennen houdt, doet Fleur het wel heel erg goed want van de snelste zes kinderen wordt ze uiteindelijk tweede. En aan het einde van de sportdag worden aan alle winnaars medailles en lintjes uitgereikt op een echt podium. Fleur is apetrots en wij ook. Het weer was heerlijk vandaag en het was een erg leuke morgen.

This morning the children from kindergarten together with year 1 and 2 at Fleur’s school had Athletics Carnaval. Parents, brothers and sisters could come and watch and Daan and I always like that a lot (and of course Fleur too). The children are split up in age groups. Fleur is in the 6 years old group with other children that already turned 6 this year or will be 6 this year. Then they do all sorts of games. They have to walk with a very small bean bag on their head, hopping in a sac, do ball games, they have a fun play with a parachute and they have to do running. They made a special track on the grass so it looks like a rea; track competition. They make three groups of all the girls in Fleur’s group and those three groups have to run. The best two girls from each group will go through to the finals later that morning. Fleur comes in second in her group so she is going to the finals. At first she thinks this is very cool. But after we had recess, she does not want to run anymore. I promise her that I will run with her and Kaila tells her that the three winners will probably get a ribbon. Fleur thinks that will be very nice and now she does want to run again. For someone who does not like to run at all, Fleur is doing really well because of the six fastest girls in the finals she comes in second. And at the end of the Athletics Carnival all the winners get a medal and a ribbon, on a real stage. Fleur is very proud and so are we. The weather was very good today and we had a wonderful morning.

We gaan naar Barrenjoey Head en Palm Beach / We go to Barrenjoey Head and Palm Beach

De weersvoorspelling vertelt ons dat het vanmorgen in ieder geval mooi weer zal zijn, en er misschien in de middag wat regen kan vallen. We besluiten naar Barrenjoey Head te gaan. Onderweg regent het, maar we rijden toch maar door. Mocht het nog steeds regenen als we daar aankomen, kunnen we dan iets anders bedenken. Gelukkig is het droog als we aankomen. Het waait alleen wel erg hard en het is behoorlijk fris. We lopen de wandeling naar Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Het is een mooie wandeling met een lekker klimmetje. Eenmaal boven hebben we een fantastisch uitzicht. Fleur en Daan genieten hier ook volop. Lekker een beetje rondrennen en in het gras wat eten en drinken. Het is er heerlijk. Daarna maken we de afdaling naar beneden weer. Beneden lopen we nog naar Palm Beach (ligt onderaan de berg). Hier kunnen Fleur en Daan nog even fijn in het zand spelen en dan is het tijd om naar huis te gaan. Als afsluiting van de heerlijke dag gaat Erik fish en chips (vis en friet) halen; het is heerlijk.

The weather predictions are good for the morning, and there might be some rain in the afternoon. We decide to go to Barrenjoey Head. On the way over there it starts to rain, but we drive on. If it still rains when we get there, we will see what we do then. Luckily it does not rain anymore when we arrive. But there is a lot of wind and it is a bit chilly. We are going to walk to Barrenjoey Lighthouse. That is a good walk with a nice climb. When we arrive at the top we have a wonderful view. Fleur and Daan enjoy it a lot. They run around and we sit in the grass to have a bite to eat and something to drink. It is really lovely here. After that we walk down again. At the bottom of the hill we walk to Palm Beach (that is at the bottom). Fleur and Daan can play in the sand for a while and then it is time to go home again. We get fish and chips as a good end to the day; it is very good.

Feestje Maria / Maria's birthday party

Het is weer feestjes tijd. Volgens mij zijn er veel kinderen jarig deze tijd. Fleur heeft vandaag weer een feestje. Het is het feestje van Maria. Ze heeft een Fairy feestje bij Hungry Jack’s (Burger King). Er wordt dus veel gespeeld in het speelding daar en taart en friet gegeten. Fleur heeft het erg gezellig gehad. En Daan vond het ook leuk dat hij ook even mocht spelen toen we Fleur op gingen halen. Leuk hoor al die feestjes.

It is party time again. It looks a lot of kids have their birthday around the same time. Fleur has another birthday party. It is the party of Maria. She is having a Fairy party at Hungry Jack’s. They play a lot at the playground there and have cake and chips. Fleur had a great time. And Daan also enjoyed it because he could play for a while when we came to pick up Fleur. All these party’s are a lot of fun.

Speech Fleur en Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter gaan weer naar huis / Speech Fleur and Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter are going home

Fleur moet vandaag op school haar speech (een soort korte spreekbeurt) houden. Ze heeft erg goed geoefend. Gisteravond heeft ze het nog voor iedereen voorgedaan en het ging heel erg goed. Ze is zelf vol vertrouwen en ze heeft er erg veel zin in. Van de juf hoor ik later dan ook dat het heel erg goed is gegaan. Goed gedaan Fleur. Om 13.00 uur ga ik Fleur ophalen zodat ze ook mee kan met ons naar het vliegveld om Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter uit te zwaaien. We lunchen nog even met z’n allen thuis en dan is het tijd om naar het vliegveld te gaan. Op het vliegveld drinken we nog wat en kijken even rond in de winkeltjes. Dan is het tijd voor Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter om te vertrekken. Fleur moet even een traantje laten en dan zijn ze weg. We hebben het heel erg leuk gevonden dat ze bij ons langs kwamen. En we denken dat zij ook wel een vakantie hebben gehad om niet meer te vergeten. Tot een volgende keer maar weer.

Fleur has her speech today at school. She practiced very well. Yesterday evening she did her speech for all of us and that went very well. She is very confident and very excited to do her speech in class. Her teacher later tells me that she did very well. Well done Fleur. At 1 pm I pick up Fleur so she can join us when we drive Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter to airport and say goodbye. We have lunch at home together and then it is time to go the airport. At the airport we have a drink together and look in some shops. Then it is time for Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter to leave. Fleur is a bit sad and then they left. We enjoyed having them staying with us. And we think that they had a holiday they will never forget. See you another time.

Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter zijn weer terug / Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter are back

Vandaag komen Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter weer terug van hun vakantie in Queensland. Ze komen ’s morgens met de camper hierheen om alle spullen uit te laden. Daarna gaan Henk en Chris de camper terugbrengen naar het verhuurbedrijf. Bas en Wouter blijven hier en gaan mee Fleur ophalen. Erik haalt daarna Henk en Chris weer op. We eten op tijd want Fleur heeft zwemles vandaag. Bas, Wouter, Erik en Daan gaan ook zwemmen en zo hebben ze nog een leuke laatste avond hier. Als we thuis zijn kijken we nog een korte video van een whale watch cruise die ze gemaakt hebben. Indukwekkend hoor die grote walvissen, erg mooi. We bekijken ook nog wat foto’s en andere korte filmpjes. En dan is de laatste avond hier alweer voorbij. Tijd om te gaan slapen.

Today Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter will return from their holiday in Queensland. They will arrive in the morning with their motorhome and unpack their things. After that Henk and Chris will return their motorhome at the rental company. Bas and Wouter stay here and go with me and Daan to pick up Fleur. Erik will pick up Henk and Chris later. We have dinner on time today because Fleur has her swimming lesson today. Bas, Wouter, Erik and Daan are also going swimming and so they have a fun last night here. When we are home again we watch a short video of a whale watch cruise they made. It is very impressive to see all the big whales, very beautiful. We also look at some pictures and other short video’s they made. And that is already the end of the last night here. It is time to go to bed.

Wandeling Sassafras Gully / Walking Sassafras Gully

Erik heeft vandaag de wandeling uitgezocht (doet hij wel vaker hoor) en we gaan naar de Blue Mountains. We gaan de wandeling Sassafras Gully en Wiggins Track lopen. Het leuke van sommige wandeling is dat je door een dorpje rijdt en dan aan het einde van een straat de auto neerzet, hier begint dan een wandeling. De mensen wonen dus echt bijna in het bos. Deze wandeling gaat eerst een heel stuk naar beneden over stenen en rotsen. Af en toe heb je een mooi uitzicht tussen de bomen door. Eenmaal beneden loop je langs een riviertje. Het is wel heel erg mooi wandelen hier, net of je in een regenwoud loopt. Helaas kunnen we op een gegeven moment het juiste pad niet meer vinden en besluiten we voor de veiligheid maar dezelfde weg weer terug te lopen. We moeten wel een beetje doorlopen, want we willen niet nog in het bos zijn als het donker wordt. Gelukkig halen we het makkelijk. We zijn goed moe, maar toch ook wel voldaan. Het was een interessante wandeling.

Erik has chosen our walk today (he does that often) and we are going to the Blue Mountains. We are going to walk the Sassafras Gully and Wiggins Track. The nice thing about some walks is that you drive through a village and at the end of a street you park the car, and this is where the track then starts. The people almost live in the forest here. At the beginning this walk goes down quite a bit, over stones and rocks. Sometimes we have a wonderful view through the trees. At the bottom you walk next to a creek. Walking here is very nice, it looks like you are walking in a rainforest. Unfortunately we cannot find the right track after a while and we decide to take the same way back as we came, just to be safe. We have to walk a little bit faster because we do not want to be in the forest when it gets dark. Luckily we make it well in time. We are tired but also feel good. It was an interesting walk.

Feestje van Caleb / Caleb's birthday party

Daan heeft vandaag een feestje. Fleur en Erik gaan zwemmen en ik ga met Daan naar het feestje. Het is het feestje van Caleb en Samuel van playgroup. Het feestje wordt gehouden in Rouse Hill Regional Park. Gelukkig is het heerlijk weer en kunnen de kinderen fijn spelen. Er is een grote speeltuin en er worden een paar spelletjes gedaan. Daan geniet van het spelen met alle andere kinderen en ik klets met andere ouders. Het was heel erg gezellig.

Daan has a birthday party today. Fleur and Erik are going swimming and I will take Daan to the party. It is the birthday party of Caleb and Samuel from playgroup. The party is at Rouse Hill Regional Park. Luckily the weather is good and the kids can enjoy themselves en play. There is a big playground and they play some games. Daan enjoys playing with all the other kids and I talk with other parents. We had a good time.

Erik gaat mountainbiken en we gaan naar Disney on Ice / Erik goes mountain biking and we go to Disney on Ice

Erik gaat vandaag mountainbiken met wat collega’s van het werk. Dat is natuurlijk heel erg leuk. Ze gaan de Oaks Firetrail Ride fietsen in de Blue Mountains. Als Erik thuis komt is hij behoorlijk moe. Het was dan ook een pittige fietstocht met een flinke afdaling, maar ook stevige klimmen erin. Toch is hij wel voldaan aan het einde. Eenmaal thuis moet Erik snel douchen en eten we nog even snel wat want we moeten weer weg. We gaan vanavond naar Disney on Ice, Mickey en Minnie’s Amazing Journey. Een voorstelling waar Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Katrien en Goofy op reis gaan door verschillende werelddelen. Ze komen bij de Lion King, 101 Dalmatiërs, de Kleine Zeemeermin, Peter Pan en Lilo en Stitch. Fleur en Daan vinden het geweldig en ook wij genieten volop. Het is echt een heel erg leuke voorstelling met actie en spectakel. Na de voorstelling krijgen Fleur en Daan allebei nog een kadootje en gaan we nog iets eten bij McDonalds.

Erik is going mountain biking today with some colleagues from his work. That will of course be a lot of fun. They are going to ride the Oaks Firetrail Ride in the Blue Mountains. When Erik comes home he is pretty tired. It was a tough ride with a long descent but also a lot of climbing. He is very happy at the end that he made it. When he is home he quickly has to take a shower and we have a quick bite to eat because we have to leave again. Tonight we are going to Disney on Ice, Mickey and Minnie’s Amazing Journey. A show where Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy are traveling the world. They see the Lion King, 101 Dalmatians, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Lilo and Stitch. Fleur and Daan are having a wonderful time and we also enjoy it a lot. It is a very nice show with a lot of action and excitement. After the show Fleur and Daan get a present and we have something to eat at McDonalds.

Wandelen van Hunters Hill naar Woolwich / Walking from Hunters Hill to Woolwich

Ik wilde vandaag eigenlijk een wandeling bij zee of een wandeling in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park lopen, maar we gingen te laat van huis om er nog heen te rijden. Dus besluiten we om te gaan wandelen van Hunters Hill naar Woolwich, meer een stadswandeling. Het is heerlijk weer vandaag en de wandeling begint al goed met een aantal heel mooie gebouwen en kerken. En we zien de mooie Rainbow Lorrikeet (een vogel), dat is altijd leuk. Onderweg zien we ook heel erg veel mooie huizen, jammer dat het hier echt niet te betalen is voor ons. Zou toch leuk zijn om hier te wonen. Bij Mornington Reserve hebben we een mooi uitzicht over de Lane Cove River. Hier eten we ook even wat, lekker in het gras in het zonnetje. Daarna lopen we door naar Kelly’s Bush waar we weer een heel erg mooi uitzicht hebben. Dit keer over de Parramatta River en van hier kun je ook de City al zien. De wandeling loopt dan verder naar Clarkes Point Reserve. Al die reserves zijn erg leuk om door te lopen. Veel groen en meestal een geweldig uitzicht. Van hier kun je ook de City weer zien. Ook zijn er hier een aantal pelikanen. Ze zijn erg mooi, maar toch ook wel groot. Ik ben blij dat ze in het water zijn. Van hier lopen we naar “The Cut”, een droogdok in Woolwich. Het ziet er indukwekkend uit. Hier werden vroeger schepen gerepareerd. Nu zien we hier het Wild Oats zeilschip liggen, de winnaar van de Sydney to Hobart Race. Dat is toch wel cool hoor. We lopen terug naar de weg door een park en lopen naar een speeltuin zodat Fleur en Daan nog even lekker kunnen spelen. Daarna eten we nog wat bij een soort café. Het was een erg leuke en mooie wandeling, en we hebben een fijne dag gehad.

I actually wanted to walk near the sea or walk at Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, but we left home too late to go there. So we decided to go walk from Hunters Hill to Woolwich, more of a city walk. The weather is great today and the walk starts nice with some beautiful buildings and churches. And we see the pretty Rainbow Lorrikeet (a bird). On the way we also see beautiful houses, too bad that is really too expensive for us here. It would be very nice if we could live here. At Mornington Reserve we have a great view over Lane Cove River. We have lunch here in the sun. After that we walk to Kelly’s Bush where again we have a good view. This time of the Parramatta River and you can also see the City from here. The walk goes on to Clarkes Point Reserve. All those reserves are very nice to walk through. A lot of nature and most of the times a wonderful view. From here you can see the City again. There are also a couple of pelicans here. They are beautiful, but very big. I am glad they are in the water. From here we walk to “The Cut”; Woolwich Dock. This dock is very impressive. Years ago they repaired ships here. Now we see the Wild Oats sailboat, the winner of the Sydney to Hobart Race. That is very cool of course. We walk back through a park and walk to a playground so Fleur and Daan can play for a while. After that we have dinner at a café. It was a really nice walk and we had a great day.

Zwemmen en tapschoenen kopen / Swimming and buying tap shoes

Ik had Fleur en Daan beloofd om een keer te gaan zwemmen in de vakantie. Het was er nog niet van gekomen, dus gaan we vandaag. Helaas vergeet ik de zwembandjes van Daan mee te nemen dus kunnen we niet al te gekke dingen doen, maar dat is ook niet zo heel erg. We spelen lekker in het water en Fleur en Daan vinden het heerlijk. Daarna gaan we thuis even snel een boterham eten en moeten we weer weg. We moeten voor Fleur nog tapschoenen kopen voor de dansles waar ze een aantal weken geleden mee begonnen is. We moeten er een kwartiertje voor rijden en ik rijd ook nog een paar keer verkeerd (lastig als het zo druk is op de weg), maar we komen er wel. Fleur is heel erg blij met haar nieuwe tapschoenen en wil ze gelijk aan thuis. Dat mag heel even, maar dan moeten ze verder in de tas blijven voor de dansles. Dit was bijna laatste vakantiedag voor Fleur. Alleen nog het weekend en maandag en dan moet Fleur dinsdag weer naar school. Ze heeft er gelukkig veel zin in dus dat komt wel goed.

I promised Fleur and Daan that we would go for a swim during the holidays. I did not have the time to go yet so we are going today. Unfortunately I forget to bring Daan’s floaters so we have to take it easy in the pool, but that is not a problem. We play in the water and Fleur and Daan have a great time. After that we have a quick lunch at home because we have to leave soon. We have to buy tap shoes for Fleur for the dancing lessons she started a couple of weeks ago. We have to drive to the shop for 15 minutes and I take the wrong way as well (it is not easy when it is very busy on the road), but we do find the store. Fleur is very happy with her new tap shoes and she wants to wear them at home. She can wear them for a little while but then she has to leave them in the bag for dancing lessons. This was almost the last day of the holidays for Fleur. She only has the weekend and Monday and then on Tuesday Fleur has to go to school again. Luckily she is looking forward to that, so she will be fine.

Picknicken in Sydney Olympic Park / Picnic at Sydney Olympic Park

Het is nog steeds vakantie voor Fleur en vandaag gaan we picknicken in het Sydney Olympic Park met Nicole, Talia, Boston en Maia. Het is heerlijk weer en we hebben fietsjes en steppen meegenomen dus ze hebben genoeg te doen. We zitten ook bij een speeltuin wat natuurlijk ook al erg leuk is. We hebben lekkere dingen mee om te eten en we genieten volop. Daan fietst vooral veel op de fiets van Maia want die is net iets kleiner dan de oude fiets van Fleur en dat gaat heel goed. Heerlijk zo’n dagje in het park.

It is still holiday time for Fleur and today we are going to Sydney Olympic Park for a picnic with Nicole, Talia, Boston and Maia. The weather is very good and we brought the bikes and scooters for the kids so they have lots to do. We sit near the playground and that is a lot of fun too. We have brought jummy things to eat and we are having a great time. Daan is riding on Maia’s bike a lot because that bike is little bit smaller than Fleur’s old bike and he is doing very well. It was a good idea to go to the park on this lovely day.

Een leuke week met Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter / A nice week with Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter

Vandaag was het dan zover. Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter landen om 6 uur ‘s morgens. Erik gaat ze ophalen en ik zorg dat wij helemaal klaar zijn als ze komen. Rond 8 uur zijn ze hier. Fleur en Daan zijn helemaal enthousiast en dat is erg leuk om te zien. Erik drinkt nog even een kopje koffie mee en gaat dan naar zijn werk want hij heeft hier niet veel vrije dagen dus we moeten er zuinig mee zijn. Vanaf woensdag heeft hij ook een paar dagen vrij. Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter gaan ook eerst nog even slapen want ze zijn erg moe van de vlucht. Daarna gaan we boodschappen doen en nog even wandelen bij Woodcroft Lake. Ook lopen we even langs de school van Fleur. Dan is het al weer tijd om te eten. Erik heeft vanavond een volleybal wedstrijd (de halve finale) en omdat er niet te vroeg naar bed gegaan moet worden om een jetlag te voorkomen, gaan Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter alle vier met Erik mee. Ik blijf thuis met Fleur en Daan want die moeten natuurlijk wel een beetje op tijd naar bed.
Today is finally the day. Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter will land at 6 am. Erik will pick them up at the airport and I will make sure that we are ready when they arrive. Around 8 am they are here. Fleur and Daan are very enthusiastic and that is fun to watch. Erik has a cup of coffee with us and then he has to go to work because he does not have a lot of days off here, so we have to save some days as well. From Wednesday on he also has some days off. Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter will have a rest first because they are very tired from the long flight. After that we are going shopping because we need groceries and some other things and we are going for a walk at Woodcroft Lake. We also walk past Fleur’s school. And then it is already to time to have dinner. Erik has a volleyball match tonight (semi finals) and because going to bed early is not good with a jetlag, Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter are going with Erik to watch the match. I stay home with Fleur and Daan because they do need to go to bed a bit early.

Erik is vandaag vroeg naar zijn werk gegaan en de familie Coolen slaapt even bij. Om 10 uur is het dan toch wel tijd om op te staan. We ontbijten en maken even een lunchpakketje klaar want we gaan vandaag naar Featherdale Wildlife Park. Het is natuurlijk een heel leuk park om Australische dieren te kijken en zo hebben we een beetje een rustige dag. Dat is ook wel fijn. De kinderen genieten volop van alle leuke dieren. Vooral de kangaroos en wallabies die je gewoon kunt aaien en voeren omdat ze los rondlopen zijn erg leuk. Als we weer thuis zijn, besluiten we nog even te gaan voetballen en basketballen bij Woodcroft Lake. En dan is het al weer tijd om te gaan eten. Wat gaat zo’n dag toch snel voorbij.
Erik went to work early today and the Coolen family sleeps in. At 10 am it is time to wake up. We have breakfast and we make lunch to take with us because we are going to Featherdale Wildlife Park. It is a very nice park to look at real Australian animals and we have a nice and quiet day. And that is a very good idea. The kids love it and enjoy all the great animals. Especially the kangaroos and wallabies that you can pet and feed because they are walking freely around through the park. When we get home we decide to go to Woodcroft Lake to play some soccer and basketball. And then it is already time to have dinner. The days are over very quickly.

We gaan vandaag naar de Blue Mountains. Het wordt wel erg koud (6 graden maar) maar voor morgen voorspellen ze veel wind en dat is helemaal niet fijn in de Blue Mountains. We nemen de regenjassen en dikke truien mee en gaan er lekker op uit. Eerst gaan we naar Kings Tableland. Daar hebben we een mooi uitzicht naar Sydney centrum en de kinderen kunnen even over alle rotsen klimmen en springen. We gaan ook nog op zoek naar een grot die ergens hier moet zijn. Gelukkig vinden we hem nog. Er was een klein paadje dat een beetje verstopt was tussen allemaal struiken. Er moeten ook Aboriginal tekeningen zijn, maar die kunnen we niet vinden. Dat is wel jammer. Daarna rijden we naar Echo Point. We eten hier onze lunch even buiten op en kijken ook even naar de Three Sisters. We waaien bijna weg en het is erg koud dus we eten snel zodat we kunnen gaan wandelen. Dan krijgen we het vanzelf weer warm. We lopen de Prince Henry Cliff Walk van Echo Point naar Scenic World en dan weer terug. De wandeling is goed te doen en onderweg hebben we mooie uitzichten. Als we bij Scenic World zijn nemen we daar de Skyway naar de andere kant. Dat is erg leuk want de gondel heeft een glasbodem. Dan heb je wel een heel ander uitzicht naar het dal. Het is een kort maar leuk tochtje. De rest lopen we weer terug. Gelukkig heb je hier niet zo veel last van de wind en voelt het ook niet zo koud aan. We rijden hierna nog even naar Sublime Point Lookout voor een mooie zonsondergang. Ik ga niet mee want Daan is in slaap gevallen in de auto en ik blijf bij hem zodat hij nog even door kan slapen. Daarna rijden we naar de Outback Steakhouse. Het is erg gezellig en we hebben lekker gegeten. Dit was een goede afsluiting van een lekkere dag in de Blue Mountains.
We are going to the Blue Mountains today. It will be very cold (6 degrees) but the predictions for tomorrow say windy weather and that is definitely not good when you are at the Blue Mountains. We take the raincoats and warm jumpers and go. First we go to Kings Tableland. Again we have a great view to the city from here and the kids can climb and jump on the rocks. We also look for a cave that should be somewhere around here. Luckily we do find it. There was a small path hidden between the bushes. There should be Aboriginal paintings as well but unfortunately we cannot find them. After that we drive to Echo Point. We have our lunch here outside and have a quick look at the Three Sisters. We almost blow away from the hard wind and it is very cold so we quickly finish our lunch and start walking. That will keep us warm. We walk the Prince Henry Cliff Walk from Echo Point to Scenic World and back. When we arrive at Scenic World we take the Skyway to the other side. That is a lot of fun because the cabin has a glass floor. That gives you a very different view of the valley. It is a short but fun trip. From there we walk back again to Echo Point. Luckily you do not really feel the wind here and that also makes it less cold. After this we drive to Sublime Point Lookout for a beautiful sunset. I stay in the car because Daan fell asleep in the car, and I will stay with him so he can sleep a little bit longer. Then we drive to the Outback Steakhouse. We really have a good time together and also had a nice dinner. This was a good finish of a wonderful day in the Blue Mountains.

Als je in Sydney bent, moet je natuurlijk ook naar het centrum. Dat gaan we dan ook doen vandaag. We rijden met de auto naar Drummoyne en nemen daar de ferry naar het centrum. Het waait heel hard, maar gelukkig is het niet al te koud. De tocht met de ferry is heel erg leuk en we hebben natuurlijk direct een mooi zicht op de Harbour Bridge en de Opera House. Heel erg leuk. We gaan bij Circular Quay van de ferry af, kopen daar koffie en thee en gaan even in het zonnetje zitten. Daarna lopen we naar de Tourist Info want Henk heeft een boek met kaarten nodig zodat hij straks als ze naar Queensland gaan, kan fietsen zonder de weg kwijt te raken. En ze kunnen natuurlijk ook wel goede kaarten gebruiken voor onderweg. Dan kopen we nog even een broodje en lopen naar de Opera House. Het blijft een indrukwekkend gebouw. Op het gras in the Botanical Gardens lunchen we en genieten nog even van de zon zolang die er nog is, want al snel komen de wolken. We lopen nog een stuk door de Botanical Gardens en maken nog een foto van de Opera House en de Harbour Bridge. Daarna lopen we naar de Sydney Tower voor een mooi uitzicht over de stad. Helaas is het daar zo druk (vanwege de aankomende World Youth Day) dat er een wachtrij van 2 uur is. Daar hebben we geen zin in, dus lopen we naar Darling Harbour. We lopen over de Pyrmont Footbridge (eigenlijk waaien we er bijna overheen met die harde wind) en gaan dan een restaurantje zoeken waar we kunnen eten. We vinden een restaurantje dat er gezellig uitziet. Eerst worden er nog wat foto’s gemaakt van de zonsondergang en dan gaan we lekker eten. En daarna in het donker weer met de ferry terug naar Drummoyne. Dat is ook heel erg leuk. Alles ziet er toch heel anders uit in het donker.
When you are in Sydney you must go to the city. So that’s what we are going to do today. We drive the car to Drummoyne and from there take the ferry to the city. It is very windy today, but lucky for us it is not too cold. The ferry ride is a lot of fun and we have great views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It is really nice. At Circular Quay we get off the ferry, buy a cup of coffee and tea and enjoy the sun for a while. After that we walk to the Tourist Info because Henk needs a book with maps so he can ride the bike when they are in Queensland. And they can use some good maps when traveling around. Then we buy a sandwich and walk to the Opera House. It really is a fascinating building. We have lunch on the grass at the Botanical Gardens and enjoy the sun for as long as it lasts, because soon the clouds are there. We walk through the Botanical Gardens and take some pictures of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. After that we walk to the Sydney Tower to have a good view over the city. Unfortunately it is so busy there (because of World Youth Day) that there is a waiting line of 2 hours. We do not want to wait that long, so we walk to Darling Harbour. We walk over the Pyrmont Footbridge (we actually almost blow to the other side because of the strong wind) and we look for a restaurant where we can have dinner. We find a nice looking restaurant. First we make some more pictures of the sunset and then we have a nice dinner. After that we take the ferry back (in the dark) to Drummoyne. That was also a nice trip. Everything looks very different in the dark.

Erik brengt Henk en Chris vanmorgen naar het camper verhuurbedrijf. Daar krijgen ze een instructievideo te zien over hoe alles werkt in de camper en nog meer informatie. Die zijn dus wel een tijdje weg. Bas en Wouter blijven hier en Fleur brengen we naar Talia want daar heeft ze een sieraden maak workshop. Dat is natuurlijk heel erg leuk. Als Fleur daar is, ga ik met de jongens naar Woodcroft Lake om nog even te basketballen. Daarna lopen we weer naar huis. Ze kunnen nog even thuis spelen en dan moeten we Fleur weer op gaan halen. Ze heeft een hele mooie ketting gemaakt. En vlak daarna komen Erik, Henk en Chris ook weer thuis. Met de camper natuurlijk. Eerst even de camper van binnen en buiten bekijken en dan gaan we lekker lunchen. Vanmiddag nog even boodschappen doen en Erik en Henk moeten nog wat spullen voor de fiets kopen. Dan is de dag alweer voorbij.
Erik is bringing Henk and Chris to the motorhome company. There they will have an instruction video to see how everything works in the motorhome and a lot more information. They will be away for quite a while. Bas and Wouter will stay here and we bring Fleur to Talia because has a jewellery making workshop. That will be great fun. When we dropped off Fleur, I take the boys to Woodcroft Lake to play basketball. After that we walk home. They have a little bit of time to play at home and then it is already time to pick up Fleur again. She made a really nice necklace. And soon Erik, Henk and Chris will be back. With the motorhome of course. First we have a look inside the motorhome and then we have lunch. This afternoon we are going to get some groceries and Erik and Henk have to buy some things for the bike. And another day has gone by.

Na een lekker ontbijtje wordt de camper helemaal ingeladen en is het voor Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter tijd om te vertrekken. Ze gaan 3 weken rondtrekken met de camper door New South Wales (waar wij wonen) en Queensland (de staat erboven). Dat gaat vast een hele geweldige vakantie worden en over drie weken zien we ze hier nog weer een dagje voor ze weer terug gaan naar Nederland.
After a nice breakfast the motorhome is being packed and Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter are leaving. They are going to tour through New South Wales (were we live) and Queensland (the state above New South Wales) for three weeks. We are sure they will have a fantastic holiday and we will see them again in three weeks because they will stay with us for one more night before they are going back to Holland.

Het is vakantie / The holidays start

Joepie, de laatste schooldag is voorbij en de vakantie begint. Het gaat een leuke vakantie worden want Henk, Chris, Bas en Wouter (broer van Erik met vrouw en kids) komen in de eerste week een aantal dagen bij ons logeren. En we hopen natuurlijk op mooi weer in de vakantie zodat we zelf in de tweede week ook nog wat leuke dingen kunnen doen.

Yeeeeha, the last school day has past and the holidays have started. It is going to be a very nice holiday because Henk, Chris, Bas and Wouter (brother of Erik with wife and kids) are coming to stay with us for a couple of days in the first week. And of course we hope to have good weather during the holidays so we can do some fun things in the second week as well.
